SBA Board:From the President:
Last week, I was reading an interesting editorial in The New York Times about happiness. Maureen Dowd tells us that in general, wom-en’s happiness level has been decreasing since the 70s. Not only are we more unhappy overall, but we each get progressively more unhappy as our lives progress. Overall, men’s happiness levels are up. Men get happier as their lives progress. There are various theories to explain the trend: women are perhaps taking on more responsibility outside of the home while maintaining the same work-load in the home, most men are no longer completely responsible for supporting their families.
I don’t think I’ve often thought of happiness as something we can nec-essarily control, but I think we can. I think happiness involves a choice. Apparently, for us women, it’s something we should be focused on. And for everyone in law school, men and women, I think we should take Aristotle’s words seriously. It’s so easy to think of law school as a means (for obvious reasons). But I think we all know by now that our lives don’t go on hold while we’re here. So I for one want to do more than just get through it. If happiness is the meaning of life, we should remember it in our list of priorities. It’s sneaking higher and higher up on the list for me, and I think Aristotle would approve.
Ok, down to business: Clubs have their budgets, the Counsel of Lead-ers meet for the first time on Tuesday, and the Benefit for Justice was a great success.
Happy Monday. Hope you’re smiling today.
Have a great week, Santa Clara.
Sincerely,
Caitlin E. Robinett
