Yesterday, staff and students enjoyed another memorable Chapel program. Twenty six of our Indigenous students took part in a special program reflecting the theme of NAIDOC Week 2014, ‘Serving Country, Centenery and Beyond.’ Batavia welcomed staff and students to Chapel in her own language. NAIDOC WEEKOn Monday, our Indigenous students in Years 9 - 12 travelled to Curtin Universtiy to participate in a leardership and resillience program run by AIME (Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience).

Yesterday, staff and students enjoyed another memorable Chapel program. Twenty six of our Indigenous students took part in a special program reflecting the theme of NAIDOC Week 2014, ‘Serving Country, Centenery and Beyond.’Batavia welcomed staff and students to Chapel in her own language. Several students spoke about what NAIDOC Week is all about and Mrs Toga shared an important message encouraging us all that every single person can do service for our country wth God’s enabling.

Tomorrow, a ‘Lunch-time Fair’ will be held on the front lawn, weather permitting. Here students will be able to taste some indigenous native foods and flavours, purchase NAIDOC badges (proceeds go to the Carmbodia trip) and enjoy the musical sounds of our local performers.

A special thank you to Mrs Toga and Mrs Beck for organising all the events this week.

SOCIAL MEDIAAt the College we converse with parents and students regarding issues facing them. One of the most frequent issues we converse about are the social and academic issues that revolve around the use of technologies and social media.

Most students are not mature or informed enough about these technologies, and consequently can get themselves into very awkward social and relationship situations. Teenagers (and unfortunately some adults) find it hard to draw appropriate boundaries when using social media. Permanent records are left of private thoughts and actions. Obscene language, cowardly and unseemly comments, defamatory rumors, inappropriate visuals are often stock of these sites. Individuals seem to be free to ‘post’ items that in a more face to face communication situation they would never dare to communicate.

Legal experts often advise of the wide range of issues raised by the use of social media by students. What many students are unaware of is that many prospective employers are now searching social sites for details of prospective employees.

IN THE TOP 10!Last week, our Year 9 Graphics Tech students competed in the Aurecon Bridge Building competition held at Scitech. Congratuations to all those who participated but particular credit must go to Michael Wallis and Luke Duncan whose bridge was voted in the top 10. Judged by three engineers from the Engineers Society of WA, the bridges were marked on asthetics and functionality with feedback bring given to all participants.

It is not uncommon for applicants not to get to interview stage simply because of items posted on social media sites, sometimes years ago. Most users think that postings are private, when in reality nothing on these sites is practically private.

We would strongly advise parents to place practical limits on their children’s access to, and use of any social media. We have parents and students report to us the inordinate amount of time taken by students using such sites. We would advise that limiting your child to moderate use is advisable, especially in the junior years of school. We know many parents who do limit usage by collecting and/or blocking access to mobile telephones, ipads, and computers after 9pm at night – simply to enable their child to get a good night sleep.

Some practical intervention by you as a parent can save your child from needless grief, or from forming an unhealthy attachment to social media. Your interventions, as in other areas, helps to develop patterns of good behavior and foundational habits of usage in their adult life.
