5 Lands Walk
The forecast bad weather didn’t arrive to spoil the hard work and preparations we had made for this year’s 5 Lands
Walk. The decorations stretching off into the distance from
MacMasters Beach, the two snakes representing the Aboriginal and Chinese communities, the singing and the
dancing came together spectacularly. Many thanks to all of you who helped to make our contribution so amazing. Can’t
wait for next year!
Reports School reports go out tomorrow. Along with the usual
report, there are two other reports that detail achievement in literacy and numeracy. These additional reports are very
comprehensive and may be a little difficult to get your heads around straight away. Included in the package of
reports is a cheat sheet to help you interpret them. It would be great to get some feedback from you about them. Send
an email to the school with “report question” in the subject
line and I’ll try to answer your questions during the holidays. This time next year we will be reporting on English
using the Australian Curriculum requirements.
Central Coast Dance Festival Last night I attended the Central Coast Dance Festival to
watch Mrs Wardlaw’s Stage 3 dance group. Their performance was second last, so I had a long time to wait
to see them. It was worth the wait as they were fabulous – and definitely the best on the night. Well done girls and
Mrs Wardlaw!
Class Parent
Right at the beginning of the year the P&C and I put out a call for volunteers to serve as class parents.
Class parents are the coordinators of support for your child’s
class. They help organise support for teachers and class
room activities as needed and facilitate a sense of community among the children’s families. They strengthen
communication between the school and the families. Being a class parent can feel like a lot of responsibility, so you
could delegate to other parents. This takes the burden off you and gets more families involved. Ideally, most classes
should have two class parents.
Here are some ideas about the role and to get you thinking. Compile a class list with parent contacts like mobile
numbers or email addresses Introduce yourself to the other parents, or send a letter
in with your child and provide your contact information. Be sure to let parents know who you are if you meet
them at drop-off, pick-up or anywhere in between. Find out what the teacher wants help with as teachers
vary in what they will want you to do. Does the teacher
want parents to volunteer in the class on a regular basis? Do they need help with clerical tasks? Do they
want you to organise parents for excursions? Inform parents of P&C events and activities that are
coming up. This is a great way to increase parent participation in these events.
Coordinate events by organising parents for class parties
etc.
Collect donations and obtain teacher gifts
Inform parents of unexpected changes in class routines,
prolonged teacher absence, cancellations, etc.
K/1E is the envy of every other class in the school as they have a proactive class parent who has taken on many of
these roles already. Many thanks Nicole – you have really helped Kelly Edward and K/1E this year in so many ways.
With the school performance coming up in term 3, teachers
would be very appreciative of someone stepping up to help
coordinate costumes, car pooling etc in preparation for the big night(s).
Think about it over the holidays would you and please
respond to my plea for help next term – see your child’s teacher.

LESSONS NEXT
From the Principal continued;
Student medical forms
During Terms 3 and 4 we will be updating our medical records systems to ensure we have the most up-to-date
information on your child’s health.
If you have a child with a medical condition you will receive
a copy of the new forms in the mail and will need to fill them out and return them to us as soon as you can.
The good news is we have already started collecting some
of this information, which means less for you to do.
The new forms will help us collect your child’s important medical information and the introduction of new systems
will mean we'll be able to better manage the daily and emergency health needs of your child.
We appreciate your support as we start collecting the
information, and if you have any questions please call.
Hope you had a great term at our great school. See
you back on 16 July after a refreshing break from a short but very productive term.

Crunch&Sip
Eat a Rainbow! Crunch@Sip has been very popular in our school, with
students keenly awaiting their break to eat fruit and
vegetables each day.
But did you know that different varieties and colours of fruit and vegetables provide different nutrients that help
children to grow well and be healthy? For example a red fruit or vegetable (such as a strawberry or tomato) has
different vitamins to a white fruit or vegetable (like a banana or parsnip). This is why it is a good idea to
encourage your children to ‘eat a rainbow’!
Why not change the type of fruit and vegetables you are sending for Cruch&Sip every few days or week? Children
love crisp, colourful vegies and sweet, juicy fruit, and changing the variety makes sure they don’t get bored with
the same choice over and over.
So mix up the colours for Crunch&Sip every week!
Help, My child won’t eat fruit or veg!
Children can often be fussy about eating fruit and vegetables. Did you know that children have to be offered
a food up to 10 times before they will accept and eat it? Perseverance is the key!
Why not try sneaking fruit into a favourite dessert (for
example canned peaches in jelly), or grate some vegetables into a meal (such as grated carrot and zucchini
into Bolognese sauce)?
Or take your child to the supermarket to pick their own
sweet, crisp and delicious fruit or vegetables. They are more likely to eat them if they are involved in selecting
them.
Crunch&Sip can help encourage children to eat fruit and vegetables. When children see their peers enjoying fruit
and vegetables in class, they are more likely to eat them too.
Crunch&Sip happens in our school each day. Make sure
you send fruit or salad vegetables and water to school with you child for Crunch&Sip.
Thank you for your Crunch&Sip support. Rose-Marie Houghton

Eco Gardens Excursion
On Monday 17th June, I was able to take a select group of Stage 3 students on an excursion to the Eco Gardens to
study worm farming and composting systems that may be implemented at school. Did you know that the gas emitted
from rotting organic waste at rubbish dumps is 25 times more damaging to our environment than carbon dioxide?
We can be proactive about this issue by composting our
organic waste – returning to the earth what comes from the earth!
“I thought it was a great experience with what we did. I
learnt a lot about worm farms, composting and more. There were cool tools to use as well.” – Jai Menser
“At Kariong Eco Gadens, we learnt how to look after worm
farms and worm towers. To create a worm tower, you just put a pipe with holes in the lower quarter in the ground, so
worms can come in and eat the compost and then leave.” - Jackson Ralph
“On Monday, a few students and I attended an eco-day at
Kariong. It was a great experience and something that I
will remember. It evoked a lot of hands on stuff and I real-ly got to understand the needs of composting and worm
farming. Also, how to build and care for one at school!” – Izzy Goodwin.

Premier’s Reading Challenge 2013
Our Kindergarten and Stage 1 students will complete the
PRC in class time, with classroom teachers and the teacher librarian reading a total of 30 PRC books to them.
Stage 2 and Stage 3 students are recording their own PRC
reading online through their portal link. Students can access their PRC list from both school and home. We
encourage parents to take an interest in the book list their child is building, and take the opportunity to talk about the
books that they have read. The holiday break is a chance for Stage 2 and Stage 3 students to add to their PRC list.
Our students will need to have their PRC completed on the 29th August to have it validated, so they have just 2
months left to complete the challenge.
Congratulations to the following students who have
completed the PRC for 2013; Rory Kearns, Mark Andrew, Kaela Harle and Matt
Hayter. Donna Judd Librarian
