The Kingdom of God

For hundreds of years the people of Israel depended on prophets like Moses and Samuel for their leadership. Prophets were God’s spokespersons. Through them God was able to get his message across so that the people of Israel could follow him. All of this came to a screeching halt in 1st Samuel 8 when the people of Israel demanded a King so that they could be like other nations. This displeased Samuel, but when he prayed, God told him,”Listen to the voice of the people in all that they say to you; for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me from being king over them.” Soon Saul was anointed King of Israel.

As evidenced in our recent election, we, like the people of Israel, are keenly interested in getting the right “king.” Billions of dollars were spent in hopes that one person or another could lead us to stability, security, and prosperity. The problem for the people of Israel, and for us today is that no person can actually do that. The only truly dependable King is the King of Heaven and Earth, The Lord God Almighty.

When Jesus came to the earth, his mission was to re-establish God’s reign not only over the people of Israel, but over all creation. As in the days of the Kings of Israel and Judah we need human leaders who will “do what is right in the sight of The Lord.” Ultimately, however, the only King who has any real authority to bring peace, stability, security, and prosperity is Jesus Christ. Our hope can only be found in him.

Peace,

Rob
