The Rector’s Reflection
I’ve gotten hooked on a show called “Mozart in the Jungle” and I
recommend it to you. Produced by Amazon, it’s a romantic comedy about
a fictitious New York Symphony and their new innovative conductor,
Rodrigo, as told from the vantage point of Hailey, an aspiring young oboe
player who becomes Rodrigo’s personal assistant. Funny and smart, it also
includes Bernadette Peters, one of my very favorite Broadway stars as the
doyenne and major patroness of the symphony. In one particular episode,
Rodrigo has purposefully sent the regular oboe player, a gifted and mean
spirited woman, to the wrong place for the performance in order to bring
Hailey into the orchestra. When it becomes clear (to everyone else) that the
regular player is not going to make the show, Rodrigo goes up to Haley and
tells her to get her oboe warmed up. Hailey’s going on stage! She looks at
him with utter terror in her eyes and says shakily “I’m not sure I can do
that.” He tells her “It’s not about you. It’s about the orchestra.” Of course,
she swallows her fear and performs admirably.
Church is much the same; it’s about how we live together in our faith and
our lives, not just our “faith lives”, mind you and not all by ourselves! I
can hear Rodrigo telling me “It’s not about you,” and knowing the truth of
that bald and discomforting statement. It’s true about church too; we are
about the entirety of the community, the oneness that we are, be it as Holy
Trinity or the Diocese of Nebraska, Episcopalians or even broadly as
Christians. However, it is also about each one of us, and more specifically
about each one of us as members of the body, in this case, the body of the
Church of the Holy Trinity, and what we bring (give?) to the community.
Every one of you has a gift, be it music, organizing, caring, whatever and
it’s simply not truthful to deny that. Further that gift is for the common
good, not just for yourself but for the building up of your community. It
doesn’t matter if you think your gift isn’t good enough, or you’re not
talented enough, or even that you haven’t figure out what that gift is, you
are invited and encouraged to bring it forward and use it joyfully and fully
for the good of the community and the body of Christ in the world.
Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit;
and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord,
and there are varieties of activities
but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone.
To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 1 Corinthians 12:4-8

Holy Trinity Book Shop Book Review
A Christian's Secret of a Happy Life
by Hannah Whitall Smith 240 pp. $6.00
A happy life. That's what we all desire, is it not? The secret being to give
ourselves entirely, hook-line-and sinker, over to God. To trust God the way little children trust their earthly
father to provide for all their needs.
This book addresses the difficulties encountered in doing so-our worries, our doubts, our “supposing this
. . . ,”our“supposing that . . .” and how we may counteract them. Even when winds and storms assail us, we
must trust God, understanding that He cultivates and prunes us, just as a gardener tends to his crop, or as a
mother eagle makes the nest uncomfortable for her offspring-even pushes the little ones over the edge-getting
them to spread out their wings. And to fly.
A very positive and uplifting read. Reviewed by Marilyn Dorf
Fall Clean-up Day Saturday, September 24
th
Time to come out and help us beautify our church grounds prior to Annual Council and winter. We need to
rake, trim and do general clean up.
Date: Saturday, September 24th

What we’ll do: We will need to clean leaves and other debris out of the landscape areas, window wells and

the early spring, we may do some minor pruning.

Holy Trinity Choir
Starts Sunday, September 11 There is a growing body of research that indicates singing with a group has
health benefits! Why not join the choir, enrich the service and get
healthier. Just an extra hour on Sunday morning is all that is required. The
choir meets at 9:30 to rehearse the anthems for several upcoming services. If
you like to sing we can help you learn the music. No special training is
required. Our first rehearsal is September 11th. Join us in the choir loft and lift your voice in praise!

The Holy Trinity Giving Cart ~ Update & Our Next Project Make their Smiles Shine
Thank you for all the wonderful assortment of school supplies. They have been
distributed to Clinton and Holmes Schools as the children started the school year. You
have shown that Giving IS the point!
The theme for September and October is Make their Smiles Shine. We are decorating the Giving Cart
with toothbrushes, toothpaste and floss and asking you to donate these items. The dental supplies will be
distributed to St. Monica's, St. Mark's Pantry, and if we have enough we will give to The City Mission as well.
Our little food basket has had to be emptied often because it fills up so fast with donations. That's a good thing!
Mike and Jane delivered 9 full bags to St. Mark's on the Campus a few weeks ago. We will continue to fill the
cart with much needed items for the pantry including: peanut butter, tuna, mac & cheese, and fruit juices.
Our little food cart is making a big difference in our community, thanks to your generosity.
Flower pots needed! So.... you've been wondering why we've been asking for
flower pots. In August Sue Everett and Jane Janesch
presented to Vestry the theme for this year's Pledge Drive.
Just as last year's baskets reminded us of our many
blessings, this year's flower pots will remind us to grow in
our faith.
As a culmination, the flower pots (filled with goodies) will be auctioned off at the
Celebration Sunday luncheon at the conclusion of the pledge campaign. Thank you
to all the people who have already donated flower pots. We still need more - any
size, plastic or clay. Bring them to the parish office.
If you want to have fun decorating a pot, please take one from the display in the
foyer. We will need them returned by the end of September so that volunteers can
fill them for the silent auction. This will be a fun project for young and old
alike. Together we will LOVE, GROW and SERVE.

Words to Ponder: On Ongoing Scriptural Exploration Group Wednesdays at 9:00 am in the Memorial Room (Conf. room) The Bible is not just another dry dusty book; it is the story of our salvation and as disciples

for our lively and spirited discussion of the upcoming weeks Holy Scripture reading. Coffee
provided!
This month we thank... Loretta Love for filling up our music program this summer with glorious
music. And thanks to all the musicians who stepped up to give praise through
your gift of music. Great job!
The Beatidudes for repainting the men’s room on the main floor.
Darlene Percival and Nicole Sherer for bringing up the duck babies in our courtyard. They have left the nest
now, but not without daily feeding, watering and cleaning up for over two months.

Blessing of the Animals Sunday, October 2nd Between the services
(Note the change in time!) Bring a donation for the Cat House or the Capital Humane Society In honor of St. Francis who was famous for loving all God’s creatures, preaching to the
birds and talking with other wild animals, we bless our own animals on his feast day and
we will collect food (dry and wet), kitty litter and any other cat or kitten supplies for The
Cat House, a no kill cat shelter in Lincoln or for the Humane Society. Our pets bless us
day in and day out, my own cat showers me with his love (and his long, fine hair!) This
is your chance to have your special animal friend blessed. Blessings will be giving on the south lawn or if the
weather is not cooperating, we will move into the parish hall. If your pet is well-behaved, quiet and controlled
(think turtles or hermit crabs), you are welcome to bring them to church.
Holy Trinity is the host for our Diocesan Annual Council!
October 6-8, 2016

for the registration of all delegates and clergy upon their arrival at The
Marriott Cornhusker. We will also host two major services; Thursday evening
(7:30 pm) Evensong with a dessert reception following and the Council Eucharist on Saturday at 5 pm. There
are plenty of opportunities for you to help, and we can always use more! Thank you for volunteering.

149th Annual Council (Hosted by Church of the Holy Trinity) Marriott Cornhusker Lincoln, Nebraska October 7-8, 2016
What is Annual Council?
Duties of Council as specified in the Constitution and Canons Annual Council is held once a year at a place chosen by the previous Council. It is up to the Executive Committee
to choose the time and date of the Council. The Council is given several powers by the Constitution and Canons of the
Diocese. First, it is given the power to adopt Canons for the Diocese in addition to any other action deemed necessary for
the conduct of the affairs of the Diocese that are not in conflict with either the Constitution and Canons of the Diocese or
those of the general Church, including the debate and passage of various resolutions submitted to the Council. With the
Bishop, the Council is given all temporal powers of the Diocese, except those delegated to some officer, agency, or
committee during the interim between Councils. The Council also has the authority to discuss and pass the annual budget.
Delegates and Officers of Council Members of the Council consist of the Bishop, all clergy who are canonically resident within the Diocese, and lay
delegates who represent the missions and parishes in union with the Diocese. All lay delegates must be confirmed
communicants at least 18 years of age, who are canonically resident and are eligible for suffrage at the annual meeting of
the parish or mission they represent.
The Bishop of the Diocese serves as the President of Council. If the office of Bishop is vacant, the president of the
Standing Committee serves as the President. In addition, a secretary, treasurer, and clerk are chosen from among the lay
and clerical delegates. A chancellor is chosen to serve as legal councilor to the Bishop and Council. The Canons allow
other offices to be chosen by the Council, including delegates to General Convention.
Business Meetings of Council Each Council must elect a Standing Committee and an Executive Commission. The Standing Committee consists
of four presbyters and four lay communicants. These must be canonically residents of the Diocese and are regular
participants in the work and worship of their parish or mission. The Executive Committee must consist of not less than six
presbyters and six lay communicants.
