BURRANEER BAY PUBLIC SCHOOL NEWSLETTER TERM 3 – WEEK 6

Student Safety It is very important that we are mindful of student safety at all times. Before and after school is no exception. The residents of Crusade Place and Coral Road have once again expressed their concerns about illegal parking, especially during afternoon pick up. They are convinced that the situation is escalating and student safety is at risk because of the increased number of parents who are parking illegally. Please do not park over or in their driveways or at the end of the cul de sac. The police and Sutherland Council have been contacted to help sort out this issue.

Student Safety is extremely important at all times

School Crossing Safety The School Crossing Supervisor program is a statewide program that contributes to the safety of primary school students. School crossing supervisors help students use the crossings on roads adjacent to or nearby schools. Our School Crossing supervisors have expressed their concerns about student safety at the crossings. A number of students and their parents walk across the crossing before the supervisor has been able to stop the traffic. This is dangerous as cars often proceed through the crossing without warning.

Students and parents must wait on the footpath until the Crossing Supervisor indicates it is safe for them to cross.

A Day in 2S This term Year 2 students are studying a Science unit called the Material World.

Last Friday the Year 2 students went to the Science Space in Wollongong. Science Space is a place where everyone can go to see science and technology discoveries. It also has an amazing Planetarium. Science brings over 100, Science Shows, Workshops and Australia’s #1 Planetarium to the Illawarra region.

Students in 2S were very excited to share their day. They enjoyed the interactive exhibits, the Science Shows, the hands-on learning experiences and star watching in the planetarium.

BURRANEER BAY PUBLIC SCHOOL NEWSLETTER TERM 3 – WEEK 6

YEAR 6 CAMP CANBERRA AND THE SNOW The Electoral Education Centre at Old Parliament House was our first stop. We learnt about the voting process and the history of parliament in Australia. We also had a chance to vote ourselves and to find out how the voting process works. Next stop: New Parliament House. This is a spectacular building, where we had the opportunity to explore the Senate and the House of Representatives, as well as participate in a role-play to get a bill made into a law. After a long bus ride, we finally arrived at the motel and went to our cabins. We collected our ski gear and were looking forward to our day in the snow. On Tuesday, we travelled to Thredbo where we had a two-hour ski lesson, followed by free time. The weather was amazing and we all had a great time. Some of us spent more time on the snow rather than skiing! Later that night we had a disco with a DJ. On Wednesday, our lovely teachers decided to would be good to pound on our doors at 5:30 am for breakfast. Thankfully, we were allowed to wear our PJs to breakfast! It was freezing cold at that time of the day! After 2 hours on the bus, we arrived at Questacon. There were many hands on activities such as the speed bowling and the artificial lightning. Not to mention the freefall slide that we all loved. Later that day the mood changed when we entered the War Memorial where we learnt about war heroes and laid poppies on the Unknown Soldier’s grave. We stopped at McDonalds and ate the most delicious food before returning home. By Cooper, Eva, Grace and Ava D

BURRANEER BAY PUBLIC SCHOOL NEWSLETTER TERM 3 – WEEK 6

Congratulations Congratulations to Milly G who represented NSWPSSA at the School Sport Australia Cross Country Championships in Queensland this week. Milly came home with three medals. She placed 2nd in her 2-kilometre event and received a silver medal. The NSW Team won the event. All members of the team received a Gold medal for winning the Championships. Milly received her second silver medal when her relay team was pipped on the finish line by Queensland and came second. What a huge achievement.

Our School Grounds The school is planning to create a vertical garden where our bike racks are located. We are making a vertical garden using old wooden pallets. We have 2 pallets up and going and have 4 more to fill. We would dearly love the following donations:

Old, colourful, children's gumboots

Unwanted bags of potting mix or soil (from pool excavations/ landscaping projects etc)

Cuttings of plants which grow easily and would be suitable for the children to plant in the gumboots

Hardy plants

Gardening tools or gloves

If you can help us with any of these items, please send them to school.

Mrs. Calvert.
