Thank you!! Our alumni are in many ways the life-force of this campus. The way alumni give of their time, talents and treasure invigorates and inspires us all. When you reach out to students with words of encouragement, prayer, a scholarship, or a career internship, their life is made richer. Thanks to each of you for your engagement and on-going support of Ottawa University.
OU LogoYou have probably noticed the new logo being used in OU’s printed materials and on the signage at each of our campuses. One of the key requirements for moving to Vision 2020, as articulated by the Board of Trustees, was a strong brand that clearly differentiates us from the many other universities that are vying for attention. The University’s new positioning statement resets the stage for our thinking, development and communication about Ottawa University. The new logo and tagline are a direct result of that positioning statement.
Vision 2020Shortly after President Kevin C. Eichner’s inauguration in 2008, the University embarked on a 12-year development plan called “Vision 2020.” The plan was divided into four three-year phases. The OU management team recently refined the plan’s vision statement as the University prepares for its upcoming Higher Learning Commission reaccreditation. It states, “By 2020, Ottawa University will be positioned as a rapidly expanding institution known for its innovative educational models, exceptional value, and special ability to prepare diverse student populations for lives of enlightened faith, exemplary service, inspired leadership, and personal significance.”
Advancing the Vision Capital CampaignOttawa University is in the midst of the largest capital campaign in its history, seeking to raise $24.3 million for enhancing facilities, programming, endowment, and a number of other areas. The most urgent need is the remaining $4 million that must be raised by July 10, 2013, in order to receive Mabee Foundation matching grant funds of $750,000 slated for the new Gangwish Library and Gibson Student Center. We hope you will help us continue to offer the same quality, relevant education that you received at Ottawa University by contributing to his worthy effort. To learn more about the campaign or to make a gift, please visit www.ottawa.edu/advancingthevision.
Ottawa Scholarship Fund On average, each student at Ottawa University receives over 55% of their tuition paid by annual scholarships. The Ottawa Scholarship Fund provides the resources necessary to fund these annual scholarships, as well as many other areas of the University, including technological advancements, student activities, academic programming, and building maintenance. Your support of the Ottawa Scholarship Fund has an impact on all students at Ottawa University. The Ottawa Scholarship Fund, also known as the Annual Fund, is an important part of the Advancing the Vision Campaign. You can make a gift to the Ottawa Scholarship Fund by going to www.ottawa.edu/makeagift and clicking on ‘Ottawa Scholarship Fund’.
Dome Society The Dome Society is a giving society that recognizes donors who give $1,000 or more to the Ottawa Scholarship Fund during a fiscal year {July 1 to June 30}. Every year, members of the Dome Society give more than $350,000 in unrestricted support to Ottawa University. We invite all members of the Dome Society to join us in October as we recognize them at Ottawa University’s annual Celebration Luncheon.
Heritage Roll of Honor The Heritage Roll of Honor is a listing of donors who have included Ottawa University in their estate plans. A plaque hanging in the Mowbray Union Lobby lists more than 500 individuals or families who have provided for Ottawa’s future in some way, whether it is by provisions in a will or trust, a charitable gift annuity, an endowed scholarship, or many other possibilities. Because of their generosity and dedication to the ministry and purpose of Ottawa University, all of these donors are inducted as members of the Heritage Roll of Honor at the Celebration Luncheon during our Homecoming celebration.
Phonathon Answer the call! Every fall and spring semester the Office of University Advancement hires approximately 12 students to call alumni and friends of Ottawa University to ask for their support of the Ottawa Scholarship Fund. The students truly enjoy doing this; it not only gives them work experience, but it allows them to talk with alumni and friends that are providing funds that they receive in scholarships. The next time Ottawa University shows up on your caller ID, make sure you answer the call!
OUAA – College Board The Alumni Association for the College is led by a new and enlarged Board of Directors that is highly motivated to impact alumni and students. They are focused on some specific projects and driven by their love and loyalty to OU. Two new committees (Alumni Programming and Student Relations) are endeavoring to strengthen projects and design new initiatives. You can find the complete Board of Directors at www.ottawa.edu/alumni; click “contact us”. Please contact them with your ideas and willingness to engage!
OUAA AwardsFour alumni awards have been created to honor special alumni of The College; these have been given over the years, as deemed appropriate, to people who have risen above the crowd in life. The awards are: Honorary Membership in OUAA, Esther Ruth Award, Distinguished Service Award, and Outstanding Achievement Award. Any OU alum can nominate someone for these awards. All criteria and the nomination form can be found at www.ottawa.edu/alumni, or call 866-324-8788. Please consider nominating someone in the near future.
BAHOF and its awardsThe Braves Athletic Hall of Fame was established in 1988 to honor individuals who gained recognition for themselves and OU as a result of their accomplishments while a student-athlete, coach or director of athletics at Ottawa University. Nominations are accepted from any alumni. Please contact the Alumni Office at 866-324-8788 for criteria and a nomination form. The BAHOF also awards twelve scholarships annually to student-athletes. Contributions to these scholarships and the work of BAHOF are gratefully accepted from anyone.
College ChaptersAlumni Chapters can be formed anywhere in the world where two or more alumni gather on an annual basis. If you’d like to create a chapter in your area for all ages of alumni to get together for networking, contact the Alumni Office at 866-324-8788.
Alumni Benefits Did you know that even though you’ve graduated and left the campus, you still have OU resources available to you? You can find a listing at www.ottawa.edu/alumni , click “stay connected”.
Spirit MagazineAll alumni receive the Ottawa Spirit magazine (three times per year) and the Annual Report (at calendar year end) to keep you abreast of University events and status. You can request to receive the Spirit electronically by contacting 866-324-8788. We think you’ll be very impressed with the great stories of students, alumni, and faculty that fill these pages, plus News and Notes of alumni will keep you in touch!
Website info and linksIf you haven’t noticed by now, there are a plethora of resources and ways to stay connected with Ottawa University at www.ottawa.edu. Whether it’s information about the coming athletic event or contacting a long lost friend, it’s all there for you. Don’t forget to update News and Notes online to share your latest news!
