4 Holy Family Day School is pleased to announce that there are still a few spaces available in our Young 3’s (ages 30 months and up), our Tuesday/Thursday Older 3’s, and that the 4-year-old program has availability for a few more students! We keep our teacher/student ratios low, so that we may concentrate on allowing each child to flourish as an individual. We have a thematic based learning program, the students attend Chapel on a daily basis, and Music Class is included in the price of tuition, just to highlight a few of our offerings! Please contact our office at 757-481-1180 to schedule a tour today. Helpful information can be found on our website at www.holyfamilydayschool.org. Don’t end up on the waiting list in August!!

Do You Know What Your Elementary School Student is Doing After School? Holy Family Day School has a great program limited to 20 students for after school care. Students attending John B. Dey, Trantwood, or Alanton Elementary school may ride a VBCPS bus to Holy Family. The program is structured to include playground time, snack time, homework time, centers, and other activities. Employment Opportunity in our After-School Program: Monday-Friday, from 11:30 a.m.-5:15 p.m. (when school is in session). We are looking for two to three staff members who truly enjoy interacting with children of various ages Preschool through Fifth Grade. Duties include supervising and implementing scheduled activities, VIRTUS training, and background check required. Our calendar generally follows the Virginia Beach City Public Schools calendar. You may visit our website above or the Diocesan website to download and fill out the required application at http://www2.richmonddiocese.org/human/apply.htm. Please call 481-1180 for further information. Box Tops For Education: Box Top collection is a year-round program and we are so pleased with the excellent response to this fund raiser for the school. The box outside the Welcome Office is the place to drop off your donation. Thank You!

Registered Families: Mark your calendar for our Back-To-School Open House. It will be held on Thursday, September 1, at 10:00 a.m. or 6:00 p.m. If you can’t attend the early one, you have the option of attending the later one, or vice versa. We look forward to seeing all our students and their families on September 1!

PRAY FOR PEACE: Fr. Gaudy has asked us to pray the “Prayer of St. Francis” to help promote peace in our world. Please join us at Holy Family on Wednesday, August 17, at 6:30 p.m., as we gather to pray together this beautiful prayer. We will also pray the Rosary.

PASSING IT FORWARD: SHARING THE GOOD NEWS! What Good News? The Good News of Jesus Christ and our Catholic Faith! This fall, over 100 elementary-age children will register for Christian Formation Classes in which they will learn about Jesus’ love, mercy, and their Catholic faith; however, we do not have enough Catechists to teach these eager young children. YOU can help them learn and grow by becoming a catechist! With classes between the Masses on Sundays and an engaging and easy to follow lectionary-based curriculum, this ministry can easily fit into your schedule. As a Catechist, YOU will have the opportunity to plant seeds and nurture the faith formation of the youngest members of our parish family. And, as you nurture these seeds of faith, you will also discover that your own understanding of the faith will grow. As a current Catechist has shared many times, “I learn so much from the children I teach. My understanding of the faith has grown since I became a catechist.” We provide the supplies/support/and training – all you need is the desire to serve. Let’s keep their hearts burning…Answer the Call to Serve today! We urge you to prayerfully consider joining the K-5 Catechist Team. If interested, please contact Tiffany at [email protected], or in the Parish Office for more information.

JULY ~ KNIGHT OF THE MONTH Greg Brown ~ If human energy levels were measurable, his would be off the chart. Thank you, Greg, for all that you do for our Parish and our Council.

KID’S FISHING DAY KUDOS! The 29th annual KFD Co-Chaired by Greg Brown and Charlie Clarkson was another huge success. Our 177 young fishermen hauled over 1,200 “denizens of the deep” onto the Lynnhaven Pier, and at least 600 of them were positively identified as fish!

Thank you, Greg and Charlie, and as always, thank you parishioners and Knights and their families who volunteered to make this another event well done!

PRAY FOR PEACE As mentioned by Father Gaudy, Bishop DiLorenzo has asked that we all pray for peace, using the St. Francis Prayer. We urge all Knights and their families to join the regular Wednesday evening Rosary Prayer Group on August 17 in support of the Bishop’s request. More information is available on page 3.

SEPTEMBER FORECAST We see a Family Breakfast and a Marvino Night in your future. More information later.

We invite all of the men in our parish to join our Council and

“CREATION CARE CORNER:” Misinformation about issues abounds in our media. The following article (drawn mostly from the Climate Resource Project’s research) addresses misleading information about solar energy, which could otherwise influence our position regarding this topic. Many arguments against solar energy are based on outdated or incorrect information. It is argued that solar energy is too expensive for most people. Between 2009-2014 the average cost of solar panels fell 75%. The prediction is that the cost of PV modules will drop 25% by 2018. The outcome is that electricity from solar is cheap – even cheaper – than electricity from the three fossil fuels. It is argued that the changes in radiation (solar radiation) the sun emits contribute to climate change. Scientists maintain that the contributions solar variations make on our climate today are minimal and negligible compared to those from carbon pollution. Another argument is that solar energy is not a viable source of energy in cold or cloudy areas. Technology has produced solar panels that are as effective in cooler temperatures as in hot ones. True, clouds do affect the efficiency of solar panels, but enough power can still be generated to be a viable source of electricity. Check the website at www.vasun.org/virginia-beach-solar- co-op/ if you have any interest in going solar power. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops document, Renewing the Earth, says: “Faced with the widespread destruction of the environment, people everywhere are coming to understand that we cannot continue to use the goods of the earth as we have in the past... [A] new ecological awareness is beginning to emerge... The ecological crisis is a moral issue. – Pope John Paul II, The Ecological Crisis: A Common Responsibility, nos. 1, 15, December 8, 1989.”Ed Marroni (587-4887) Holy Family Parish Environmental Committee

A Good Ol’ Fashion Country Parish Picnic

Sunday, August 28th after 10:30 a.m. Mass

Food, fun, and fellowship are the cornerstones of

“A Good Ol’ Fashion Country Picnic” at Church of the Holy Family.

This year, the talents of many in our parish are combined to make a fun afternoon of community for parishioners to

celebrate the end of the summer and the start of a new school year.

We provide the hotdogs and hamburgers you provide a side dish or dessert to share – sign-ups after all masses.

Big attractions include: live music, watermelon seed spitting competition, adult corn-hole, children’s games,

face painting, an inflatable bounce house, and, of course, eating great picnic food!
