“Building Our Family of Faith”Because of vacation schedules at the Diocese,

there is no report this week.

HOLY FAMILY FAIR NEWS:I hope everyone enjoyed the Fair this year! It’s a great time that we share with our family, friends, and new friends that we invite from the community to visit the Church that we all love.

Once again, “Thank You” for your support and “Thank You” for volunteering!

Father Gaudy, thank you for your support all these years. It’s been great fun and you seemed to enjoy the Fair as much as we did! You will always be in our thoughts and prayers. We will work hard to make sure that “Holy Family Fair 2018” is one that Father Eric can be proud of!

We are happy to report that we had another great year and raised over $24,000.00 for our parish! Can’t wait until next year!

AMERICAN DISABILITIES ACT: July marks the 27th Anniversary of the American Disabilities Act (ADA). This act became law in 1990. The ADA is a civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life, including jobs, schools, transportation, and all public and private places that are open to the general public. The purpose of the law is to make sure that people with disabilities have the same rights and opportunities as everyone else. The ADA gives civil rights protections to individuals and disabilities similar to those provided to individuals on the basis of race, color, sex, national origin, age, and religion. It guarantees equal opportunity for individuals with disabilities in public accommodations, employment, transportation, state and local government services, and telecommunications. The ADA is divided into five titles (or sections) that relate to different areas of public life. To learn more and to celebrate the Anniversary, visit adaanniversary.org. And for more information on Disabilities in our Parish, please contact Susie Stefonowich, our Parish Advocate at [email protected].

Holy Family Day School: New to the area? Our Parish school is an educational treasure tucked away right here in the heart of Great Neck! Our students are ages two through Kindergarten. Presently, we have three spaces open in almost all classrooms. However, as the new school year draws closer and NATO and the military make their moves, that changes quickly! If you are interested in having your student attend Holy Family Day School, please visit our website at www.holyfamilydayschool.org for more details. We have some exciting new offerings such as KidFit and our two-year-old class for the upcoming year 2017-2018. Please contact Cindy Girard in the Day School Office at 757-481-1180, to set up a tour over the summer!

Early Childhood Program Employment Openings:We love the military here at Holy Family Day School! We understand that military families move often! The Day School has been fortunate to employ several military wives and at the end of June, some of our wonderful employees left due to moves. We therefore have openings for a Lead Teacher and Classroom Assistant. If you are interested in one of these positions, please go to http://richmonddiocese.org and search application. We require the diocesan application and would love to meet you! Please call to set one up at 481-1180!

Box Tops For Education: Our BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION collection continues!!!! Thank you for your support and dedication to our school.

LOW-GLUTEN COMMUNION HOSTS:For those who require special dietary restrictions, we now have low-gluten communion hosts (approved by the USCCB). Please contact Steve in the Parish Office for further instructions on how to receive low-gluten hosts at Communion each weekend.

JAWS? Okay, so maybe no one has ever caught a great white off the Lynnhaven Pier. However, on the morning of August 2, at our 30th Annual Kids Fishing Day, for a youngster who has just caught a fish for the first time, it might as well be! You can help make this memorable experience happen. Call PGK Greg Brown and cast yourself into this fun-filled event. After a half-day of fishing and a delicious Box Lunch served to all attendees, 200 kids will go home with new fishing rods, commemorative T-Shirts, and fond memories that will last a lifetime. You can be half of a team that will help six great kids improve their fishing skills or learn how to fish for the first time. Even if you know nothing about fishing, you will be partnered with who someone who does. Please call Greg Brown at 757-560-0988 and volunteer to help!

WEEKLY WISDOM

Who are the Jesuits? The Jesuits, or The Society of Jesus, was founded by Saint Ignatius of Loyola. The goal of the Jesuits is to spread the catholic faith. This is mostly done today through education and missionary work.

Ignatius was a Spanish nobleman and soldier. He was badly wounded in 1521 and was unable to continue his professional career as a soldier. During his recovery, he spent time in prayer and fasting which led him to become a soldier for Christ. Ignatius realized that he needed to finish

his education if he was going to convert others. He was 38 years old when he entered the College of Saint Barbe of the University of Paris. It was here that he developed his model for education creating a structured study with prerequisites and class levels.

After he completed his education, Ignatius and four friends wanted to make a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. Conflicts between the Turks and Venice made this trip impossible, so they diverted to Rome to seek out the Pope and serve him. The Jesuit order was instituted by Pope Paul III in 1540.

The Jesuits today are the largest male religious order in the Catholic Church. Members take four vows, poverty, chastity, obedience, and a special vow of obedience specifically to worldwide mission. Pope Francis became a member of the Society of Jesus in 1958.

Women’s Faith Sharing and Fellowship Circles are ongoing and meet at various times during the month. For more information, contact Marie Sexton at (757) 718-4147.

Have a blessed week, Your AFF Team

CHRISTMAS IN JULY – FOOD PANTRY FOOD DRIVE:Many of the families we serve rely on our schools to feed their children two meals a day. 22 million children receive free or reduced-priced meals through the National School Lunch Program. When school is out during the summer months; however, many children go hungry. Help a few of these children by donating to our Food Drive. We will have a “Christmas in July Food Drive.” Flyers will be on the chairs in the Church again this weekend (July 15/16). Please bring in extra food for our Food Pantry so we can help feed the hungry of our community. We cannot do this without your generous support.

“CREATION CARE CORNER:” As is generally known, the present administration has lifted the ban on offshore drilling. Five companies have applied for permission to begin seismic testing in the Atlantic Ocean from Delaware to Florida. Why must we residents of Hampton Roads be concerned? This is the preliminary step, eventually leading to the drilling of oil wells. Seismic airgun blasting is used to locate deposits of oil and gas below the ocean floor. These airguns shoot dynamite-like blasts of compressed air every 10 seconds or so through the ocean to miles under the seafloor. The noise is so powerful it can be heard up to 2,500 miles from the source. The airgun blasting could harm the marine environment, stress sea creatures, especially, right whales, which are already in peril, and result in the marine populations relocating to safer waters.

The question is why allow offshore drilling? The powerful oil and gas industries are very much for it. More oil will mean more profits. For the ordinary citizen, they claim it will mean cheaper gasoline, more jobs, and a thriving local economy. Opponents are quick to respond that reports about job increase is untrue, that there is no economic rationale, no security rationale that warrants off shore drilling. Among the numerous groups and organizations against it are our Virginia Beach City Council and the U.S. Navy ( who has opposed it since 2005).

What can we do? To start, we need to become informed and educate ourselves about the issue. Contact Oceana, an environmental organization dedicated to protecting the world’s oceans, at [email protected] and the Sierra Club at [email protected].

“Is it realistic to hope that those who are obsessed with maximizing profits will stop to reflect on the environmental damage which they will leave behind for future generations? Where profits alone count, there can be no thinking about the rhythms of nature, its phases of decay and regeneration, or the complexity of ecosystems which may be gravely upset by human intervention.” ~ Pope Francis
