ATTENTION, PARENTS: Christian Formation registration packets for K-5 and 6-8 are now available on the parish website. Hard copies are available in the Family Room and at the reception office. Please register your children/teens as soon as possible. Please write checks to Church of the Holy Family and write “CF” in the memo line: $25.00 for one child/teen, $50.00 for two or more. If your child is in need of First Reconciliation/First Eucharist please complete the sacrament info form and submit a copy of his/her baptismal certificate. Registration forms are due by September 21. All forms received after September 25 will be processed the week of September 29. No additions to classes will occur on September 28. Students whose forms are received after the 25th will begin CF on October 5.

ATTENTION, PARENTS: The Christian Formation Nursery (between the Masses 9:30 a.m.-10:30 a.m.) will NOT be operating this year due to lack of volunteers. Holy Family Day School: Studies show that the Preschool formative years are crucial to a student’s education. We keep our teacher/student ratios low so that we may concentrate on allowing each child to flourish and develop as an individual. We have a thematic based learning program, the students attend Chapel on a daily basis, and Music class is included in the price of tuition. This fall we have places available in our Young 3-Year-Old class, with your choice of Monday, Wednesday, Friday or a Tuesday, Thursday class for your student. There are also a few spaces available in the Older 3-Year-Old (Tuesday, Thursday only) class. Please contact our office at 757-481-1180 to schedule a tour today. Helpful information can be found on our website at www.holyfamilydayschool.org.

A Sweet Thank You! Last Sunday, the Knights of Columbus held a very well-attended Back To School Ice Cream Social. The Knights had held their annual Marvino Italian Dinner the night before so we would like to thank them not only for yummy treats, but also for promoting a fun sense of community!

Ever Hear of YNOT Tuesday? Of course not, because it just doesn’t flow! But, MARK YOUR CALENDAR NOW – Tuesday, October 7, will be Holy Family Day School’s Spirit Night at the Great Neck Location. You can order online, take out, call in, eat in, or have your dinner delivered to your door! Just mention the Day School when you order! Thank you.

Box Tops For Education: Box Tops collection is a year-round program and we are so pleased with the excellent response to this fund raiser for the school. The box outside the welcome office is the place to drop off your donation. Thank You!

Farm Fresh Receipts: We are once again collecting Farm Fresh receipts to earn points toward the Day School’s educational supplies. The Grand Total of our receipts last school year was $231,496.00! We could not have accomplished this without you!! Last month Mrs. Girard, our Principal, received a phone call from the 1234 the Community Headquarters, informing us we had one of the highest totals of any school in the area. We truly appreciate each and every one of you who helped us with this achievement!

NATIONAL VOCATIONS AWARENESS: “Seek the Lord while He may be found…” While seeking Him in prayer and the sacraments, listen to Him. Could it be you are being called by Jesus to serve as a priest, deacon, sister, or brother? If you think He may be offering you this grace, call Father Michael Boehling at 804-359-5661 or e-mail at [email protected].

THE ART OF CARING, LISTENING CONVER-SATION – Fall 2014: Dr. Milton Meyeroff explains that caring means feeling connected to another, but still appreciating that the person is an individual with separate appetites, needs, and desires. Caring consists of ingredients such as patience, honesty, trust, humility, hope, and courage. With this thought in mind, I invite any parishioner who would like to consider the ministry of HOME VISITOR here at Holy Family, or from any other parish, or for any Home Visitor who feels a need for a refresher, to attend the two weekend seminar here at Holy Family. The dates will be Saturday, October 4, and October 11, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Lunch will be from noon to 1:00 p.m. on both days. Bring a sandwich, unless you have a special diet. Everything else will be provided. Topics include: the theological history of Pastoral Care, essentials of a pastoral conversation, self-care, spirituality and prayer, bringing Eucharist to the sick, and more. The seminar is very interactive. Contact Chaplain Jim Fedor at 481-5702 to enroll, or for any questions you may have. Look forward to seeing you.

TREASURES NEEDED: There will be another yard sale in October at First Colonial High School to benefit the Melissa’s Hope Orphanage in Port au Prince Haiti. It was such a success last year that we are doing it again. MERCI BEAUCOUP!

JUSTICE AND PEACE SOCIAL MINISTRIES

THE CHOSEN MINISTRY is a ministry dedicated to ministering to persons (middle school to adults of any age) who experience disabilities. We learn that we are all “chosen” to serve God and God loves all of us just as we are. We have Holy Family The Chosen Ministry gatherings the first three Mondays of the month from 6:30-8:00 p.m. during the school year. The next meeting is 6:30 p.m. on Monday, October 6. For more information, contact Susie Stefonowich at 342-8540 or [email protected].

BELONGING is a small group process offered by JustFaith…It is an invitation to transform and deepen our spiritual lives by expanding our hearts and minds...awakening us to our connectedness and unity with all creation. It is an invitation...to live deeply and fully by making room for wonder, wounds and mystery… to listen carefully to Scripture and each other… to draw the world down into ourselves and hold it in prayer. There is a prayerful, reflective tone to each session…holy listening… sharing of a book and several articles… prayers, exercises and questions that sometimes focus on disturbing social realities.Seven (7) two-hour sessions plus one immersion experience (going to the margins of society), Thursdays, October 16-December 11, 6:30 p.m. Renee McCarthy (486-3375 or [email protected]), Teresa Stanley (286-5858 or [email protected]).

40 DAYS FOR LIFE: 40 Days for Life is a focused pro-life campaign with a vision to access God’s power through prayer, fasting, and peaceful vigil to end abortion. Please join us as we pray in front of Planned Parenthood on Newtown Road on Thursdays from 10:00-11:00 a.m. For more information, e-mail or call Mary Sorrentino at [email protected] or 757-481-0766.

To the community of Holy Family,

Thank you for your wonderful donations to the ABC Apple Tree School Supply Drive. Your support is appreciated and the students will benefit from your generosity. School Social Work Services Project HOPE 2014

CARE FOR OUR EARTHMuch misinformation is circulated regarding climate change and other critical environmental issues by special interest groups mainly the fossil fuel industry and those associated with it. The result is confusion and the formation of unfounded positions about these issues. The truth is not always easy to see. As small a tool to enable us to learn how accurate our knowledge is on this topic, The Union of Concerned Scientists has designed a brief quiz, “Science facts from Science fiction,” which follows:

1. Hotter temperatures by themselves will not endanger public health or welfare – science fact or fiction?

2. Fire-breathing animals actually existed so some scientists state – totally ridiculous or true?

3. Deforestation is seen as a key contributor to global gas emissions – science fact or fiction?

4. Natural gas is essentially an emissions-free power source –science fact or fiction?

5. There is no global warming in North America (Fox News!) – science fact or fiction?

Answers: For questions # 1, 3, are science facts; questions # 2, 4, and 5 are not science facts.Go to www.ucsusa.org to receive a “Got Science” sticker.
