Bingham 018 will be the first IGR tournament to
take place in Scotland. Caledonian Thebans will
stage the tournament over one of two possible
weekends in late May, early June, with the optimal
date to be agreed with the SRU, Edinburgh city
planning authorities and the IGR community. The
club will also target participation by at least 50 IGR
clubs, helped by Edinburgh’s easy to reach location.

The Bingham Cup has gone from strength to strength
over the past 14 years and Caledonian Thebans
will uphold it’s great reputation and support that
growth by introducing a women’s invitational
tournament, inviting women’s rugby into the family.
Working directly with the IGR teams that have
female squads, the Thebans will invite these clubs
to bring their women’s sides to compete alongside
the men’s tournament on the same pitches and in
the stadium at Bingham 018, elevating inclusive
rugby and the Bingham Cup to the next level.

Bingham 018 will take place at none other than
BT Murrayfield Stadium, home of Scotland’s
national team and used regularly by Guinness
Pro1 side Edinburgh Rugby. Caledonian Thebans
have worked closely with the Scottish Rugby Union
(SRU) to secure the stadium and its surrounding
pitches and grounds for the tournament. The
world-class stadium grounds have 4 high-quality
pitches and are directly joined to a further pitches
and warm-up facilities at Roseburn Park. There is
ample space for a tented village to accommodate
all teams alongside catering and social areas to
create a real festival atmosphere; with a further
benefit being that indoor changing and shower
facilities are available at all parts of the complex.

The finals of Bingham Cup 018 will be played on
the hallowed turf of a 67,000-seat international
rugby stadium. The home of Scottish Rugby and
a chance to ruck, maul and score on the same
pitch as Jonah Lomu, Bryan Habana, Stuart Hogg
and Johnny Wilkinson - to name but a few. An
incredible experience for players, coaches,
referees and supporters alike - a world-class
venue that takes Bingham Cup to the next level.
There are several key elements which make Edinburgh the perfect location for Bingham 018. From world-class
rugby grounds and facilities situated within the city centre, to a compact, cosmopolitan city for the social side
of things, Scotland’s historic capital delivers on all fronts.

Every year over 4 million people visit Edinburgh
to take in historic sites, stunning architecture and
breathtaking scenery, with the summer playing host
to the world’s largest arts festival - the Edinburgh
Festival Fringe, and the winter seeing the Festival
of Fire and Hogmanay, Scotland’s New Year
celebrations. To support these many visitors you
need plenty of accommodation options. Edinburgh
has them all - from five-star hotels to boutique
guest houses to cosy youth hostels. Caledonian
Thebans will bring you quality and choice, working
with the city’s dedicated Convention Bureau to
offer visiting teams a bespoke online booking
service - so they can find the right accommodation,
in the right location, at the right price.

Like most capital cities, Edinburgh has a very
well-connected international airport with over
00 flights per day to more than 10 destinations
across Europe, North America and beyond.
Unlike most capital cities, Edinburgh has 4 other
international airports within hours travel by
road or rail; plus direct rail connections to London,
Birmingham and Manchester. Once you’re here,
it’s also easy to tour Scotland - from cosmopolitan
Glasgow, to the land of William Wallace, Stirling;
from the home of golf, St Andrews; to the
land of monsters, Loch Ness. Edinburgh is the
perfect base for a pre- or post-Bingham holiday.

Edinburgh is a gateway to the rest of Scotland - but
as “a city so beautiful, it breaks the heart again and

If you want history, visit Edinburgh Castle or tour
the city’s underground alleys and catacombs. If
you want culture, try one of Scotland’s National
Galleries - Edinburgh has 4 of them - or perhaps
the Museum of Scotland. Maybe you’re seeking
royalty at the Palace of Holyroodhouse or the Royal
Yacht Britannia; an amazing view on the volcanic
slopes of Arthur’s Seat; a selfie with the famous
pandas at Edinburgh Zoo; a wee dram at the Scotch
Malt Whisky Society; or just a big night out in the
gay bars of Picardy Place. Whatever you like to do
off the pitch, Edinburgh has it all!

A successful tournament requires a balanced,
robust and effective Organising Committee.
The Thebans’ Organising Committee, chaired
by club captain Neil Fox, will focus on five key
areas of event management and draw on the
full professional and creative skills of a well-
established club. To support the Committee, a
Project Board of key professionals will be invited
to act as advisors, advocates and supporters of
Edinburgh 018, ensuring a high level of guidance
and buy-in from external stakeholders, creating
a real Team Scotland approach. With strong
governance and a budget developed with input
from the SRU, who are clearly experienced in
hosting international rugby events, Caledonian
Thebans have the structure and rigour to host the
best ever Bingham Cup.

What could be better than to take the warm
Southern welcome we received in Nashville, the
Athens of the South; and add a feisty Scottish
welcome in Edinburgh, the Athens of the North?
In 018, Caledonian Thebans can promise you a
hundred thousand welcomes in Edinburgh, the
nation’s proud capital. The Scottish people are
world-renowned for their friendly demeanour and
welcoming attitude; reflected in the nation’s great
respect for LGBTI equality (both culturally and in
law) and its tolerant, accepting society. Bingham

Please find the Caledonian Thebans budget for Bingham 018 across the page. This has been researched and developed
with the Scottish Rugby Union alongside other local and national bodies.
S p o n s o r s h i p
The budget set forward for Bingham 018 aims to attract £1,500 of sponsorship for the tournament. However, the
Organising Committee will be tasked to fundraise beyond that figure and are already mapping out plans for companies,
brands and organisations that will be targeted. The Thebans have already spoken to the Scottish Rugby Union about
making connections with current sponsors and partners of Scottish Rugby and BT Murrayfield thus working with brands
that already have an investment and association with the tournament grounds.
In order to capitalise on both cash and in-kind sponsorship opportunities, in Autumn 016 a full sponsorship brochure
shall be produced, with input from IGR and the SRU, so that potential backers of the tournament are offered a professional
opportunity, but one that reflects the Bingham Cup and its brand in the most appropriate light.
M e r c h a n d i s e
Caledonian Thebans are already in the process of exploring production options for official Bingham 018
merchandise, with current leading routes being either the official kit suppliers of Scottish Rugby who have
a store on site at BT Murrayfield, or the current supplier of the Caledonian Thebans kit. A full range of
Edinburgh 018 merchandise will be available with stock numbers at a level to suit the demand of such a
large event, and will be on sale at the tournament grounds throughout the Bingham Cup, as well as at other
key venues and online. All merchandise will be signed off by IGR in accordance to their brand guidelines.

M a r k e t i n g & P R
Marketing the tournament to the inclusive rugby
community and promoting it to the public will be
critical to its success. Caledonian Thebans are well-
placed to achieve this through a strong social media
presence and good-quality media campaign for both
the mainstream and LGBTI press, all complimented
by the benefits of a Team Scotland approach. For
Bingham Cup 018 the club’s key marketing and PR
objectives will be:
•To promote the tournament in a clear and
transparent way, so players and supporters can
understand exactly what they’re getting and their
expectations are met.
•To motivate and excite not just players and
supporters but also the wider public, raising the
profile of Bingham Cup and attracting partners and
supporters from beyond our community.
B R A N D I N G
Caledonian Thebans are aware of IGR’s current
work on the brand of the Bingham Cup and will
work within the regulations set-up as a result of this
activity. The Team has already had an exploration
around the creative for Edinburgh 018 and how
to give the look of the tournament a Scottish
flavour, but will await the publication of the new
guidelines.

Marketing and PR activities will take place in phases and be managed separately from the club’s day-to-day
promotion:
P h a s e 1 (October 16 – April 17): Raising awareness
Low-key marketing throughout the inclusive rugby community via social media, raising awareness of the Cup
and promoting key elements of the tournament. This phase aims to generate interest, but in a respectful way
that does not undermine earlier tournaments including the Union Cup 017, hosted by Madrid Titanes.
P h a s e 2 (May 17 – December 17): Growing the tournament
This phase will see the launch of the Bingham Cup 018 website and potentially a mobile app. Marketing
activity would intensify across all channels, focused on practical matters such as tournament registration,
accommodation and travel. PR activity would also increase, raising media awareness; and the club
would establish a PR ‘steering group’ of external stakeholders from within the Team Scotland family.
P h a s e 3 (January 17 – Launch): Countdown to Bingham
An intense push to create excitement about the tournament, leveraging key assets to bring the tournament to life
and previewing specific aspects including tournament facilities, social venues and key attractions in Edinburgh itself.
T E A M S C O T L A N D
Caledonian Thebans have already built good relationships with many of the key stakeholders required to make this
plan a success as part of Team Scotland, and are confident they can promote Bingham Cup 018 and create the most
eagerly-anticipated tournament for players, supporters and the public alike.
CALEDONIAN THEBANS | BINGHAM CUP BID 018
The Caledonian Thebans 018 Bingham Cup Bid is endorsed by a number of organisations and
individuals. These range from individuals and charities through to politicians, our national Rugby
Union, and even our First Minister.

in full.)
E N D O R S E M E N T A N D S U P P O R T
Dear Andrew It is with great pleasure that I, on behalf of Stonewall Scotland, endorse the Caledonian Thebans bid to bring the Bingham Cup to Edinburgh in 2018. At Stonewall Scotland, we believe in the power of sport to empower individuals and transform institutions. We’re delighted that the Thebans share those values which are so powerfully demonstrated in their bid. Scotland has come a long away with regards lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans rights. We continue to lead the rest of Europe and the UK for LGBTI equality according to the ILGA annual Rainbow Index which compares laws and Government policies on LGBTI equality in 49 European countries. Three of our main party political leaders define as LGB and the Scottish Parliament has the highest rate of out LGBT members of any Parliament in the world. In First Minister Nicola Sturgeon we have a proud ally and the Scottish Government has a strong record on LGBTI equality. These factors help to ensure that Scotland is an open, tolerant and welcoming country which embraces difference and celebrates diversity.
The Thebans role model these values too by continuing to strive to be a truly inclusive club. Their commitment, vision and passion for bringing the Bingham Cup to Edinburgh will deliver a first rate event where all participants will feel welcome.
We are proud to support this bid and proud to offer our continuing support to the Thebans as they strive to make sure everyone, everywhere, is treated with acceptance without exception.
Yours faithfully.

Edinburgh is a compact size making it a great city to
get around and explore easily. From twisted wynds
to cobbled lanes via shopping streets and lush parks,
Edinburgh has it all. Connecting all of this is the
City’s award-winning transport network of trams
and buses, which will also act as the transport link
for Bingham 018.
The journey into the city centre from the airport
takes as little as 5 minutes with a regular timetable
available by both bus and tram. The journey is
extremely reasonably priced with a return ticket
costing as little as £7.50. Once in the heart of the
city the same tram and bus network enables a true
exploration of the capital - from the historical Old
Town to the trendy New Town, via the up-and-
coming docks of Leith and adventurous outdoors
of Holyrood Park. More importantly, the intricate
transport network provides multiple options for
players and supporters to quickly and easily get to
BT Murrayfield, the location of the Bingham Cup
tournament.
To get to the rugby grounds, participants are able to
take the tram direct to the gates of BT Murrayfield,
a journey that takes no more than 0 minutes from
anywhere along its route, or can ride a number of
buses that stop no more than 5 minutes walk from
the stadium and its grounds. In order to make this
even easier for visiting teams, every player and
supporter registered for Bingham 018 will be
presented with a free three-day travel pass as part of
their registration to cover the cost of their travel to
and from BT Murrayfield for the rugby tournament.
This travel pass will also provide travel around the
city throughout the evening.
Teams will not have to wait for or make their way
to a central meeting point to access pre-ordered
transport to get them to their games. Each team
can travel to the grounds at a time that suits them,
using the mode of transport most appropriate from
their accommodation. The close proximity of the
grounds and three-day travel pass also means, any
left behind boots or gum shields are easily retrieved
without the worry of missing the action.
Edinburgh is also lucky to have a number of cycle
routes throughout the city allowing visitors to take
in the sites by bike, although the City’s intimate
nature means that everything is also within walking
distance for those in need of stretching their legs.
On route to Murrayfield those walking can visit a
number of boutique shops and cafes, including one
of Edinburgh’s leading rugby stores, should anyone
be in need of some retail therapy.

K e y A r e a s o f t h e C i t y
Edinburgh’s compact aspect means there is no
need to insist on focusing on any specific area of
the city - each neighbourhood is easily and quickly
accessed. The tournament will have two focal
locations within the city centre regarding Bingham
018 : BT Murrayfield where the rugby tournament
will take place; and the Tournament Village at the
top of Leith Walk. Both are connected by a direct
tram that takes no longer than 0 minutes from
one location to the other.
BT Murrayfield and the Edinburgh 018
Tournament Village are within a three miles square
area that covers the majority of Edinburgh’s city
centre. Within this space there is also plenty of
accommodation for the teams to base themselves
as well as the venues for the Opening and Closing
ceremonies.
B T M U R R AY F I E L D
BT Murrayfield is Scotland’s national rugby stadium,
and the largest stadium in Scotland, situated in
the west of the city centre. The stadium and its
surrounds will be the location for all of the matches
within Bingham 018. Full details regarding the
rugby facilities for the Bingham Cup 018 can be
found within the Rugby Logistics section of this Bid
Document.
T O U R N A M E N T V I L L A G E
The Tournament Village for Bingham 018 will be
the focal point of social activities. Based around
Edinburgh’s gay quarter, the area will be the prime
place for players and supporters to unwind with
their global rugby family, encompassing bars and
restaurants ready to welcome Bingham visitors
beyond what many have regularly enjoyed at our
annual rugby clinic. The Tournament Village will
be the place each evening, providing a must visit
location to hear tales from the day’s events.

Bureau to provide an efficient method of booking
accommodation that all visiting teams can utilise
an online accommodation portal that allows
individuals and groups to book rooms from a range
of hotel partners at whatever cost suits their budget.
In Autumn 016, the Caledonian Thebans will
work closely with the Bureau to reserve a large
1
number of rooms at set prices across the city centre,
ready to be booked by those attending Bingham. The
reservation will take in a range of accommodation styles
and prices. A full instruction email and web-page will be
made available to IGR teams to help them plan their visit
to Edinburgh, with the Organising Committees Travel and
Accommodation group on hand to support. Bingham 018
in Edinburgh offers attendees the opportunity to book the
accommodation that best suits each individual team and
its budget via a simple and efficient booking system.
“Convention Edinburgh would be delighted to offer an
online accommodation booking service to Caledonian
Thebans RFC should they be successful in their Bid
to host the Bingham Cup in 018. The experienced
accommodation team use their local knowledge and
contacts to negotiate allocations and rates and there
are no financial implications to either Caledonian
Thebans RFC or the users of the booking service.”

Caledonian Thebans will host the th Mark
Kendall Bingham Memorial Tournament at BT
Murrayfield at the end of May, beginning of
June 018 - the first time an IGR tournament
has taken place in Scotland. Based at Scotland’s
international rugby stadium, the tournament
will take place at the best facilities it has seen,
benefitting from world-class pitches and facilities
alongside the full support of the Scottish Rugby
Union, making sure that the rugby takes centre
stage.
W h e n
Bingham 018 is to take place between Saturday
0 May and Monday 4 June 018, with final
dates to be confirmed. The rugby tournament
will take place from Friday to Sunday, with social
activities and training opportunities available in
the days prior to the Opening Ceremony which
will happen on the Thursday. The Thebans are
working closely with the Scottish Rugby Union
and the City of Edinburgh Council to select the
optimum dates for the tournament and will also
consult with the IGR community about the most
appropriate timing for the competing teams.
G A M E P L A Y L O G I S T I C S
Late May, early June is the perfect time for Bingham
018 in Edinburgh for a number of reasons:
Late May, early June fits with the traditional timing
for Bingham and Union Cup tournaments;
- This date range is within the time of year that sees
the best weather within Edinburgh and Scotland;
- With regards the international rugby calendar, this
date range is after the Pro-1 and European leagues,
but before any international summer test matches
meaning the grounds will be available and the SRU
can dedicate time, support and assistance;
- At this time of year, Edinburgh’s tourist season is
not yet in full swing leading to cheaper flights and
accommodation;
- This time of year is also prior to the City’s
summer festivals which again keeps the cost
of travel and accommodation down;
- The four universities in Edinburgh will have
completed their terms by these dates and as a result
there will be more low cost student accommodation
available for visiting teams to book.

Caledonian Thebans will provide the Bingham Cup its
biggest stage ever with the BT Murrayfield stadium for
the final matches. The 67,000 seat stadium has played
host to a plethora of rugby icons over the years, from
the biennial Calcutta Cup battle between Scotland and
England as part of the Six Nations, to test matches
against the likes of Australia, South Africa, Argentina
and the mighty All Blacks. Beyond rugby, the venue has
welcomed a variety of other sports including football
and NFL, as well as a Papal visit and music concerts
from the likes of Madonna, Foo Fighters and One
Direction. Bingham Cup 018 finals and it’s players
can now join these ranks. The stadium offers:
- Use of official Stadium Changing facilities
- Player access to the pitch via the iconic tunnel
- PA System

The safety and wellbeing of the players during the Bingham 018 tournament is one of the highest priorities to the
Caledonian Thebans. Working with the SRU, the Team’s hire of BT Murrayfield will include a range of professional
first aid and medical services: stretcher team for pitches, on-site ambulance throughout the tournament,
on-site doctor, access to BT Murrayfield first-aid room facilities, and first aid team on site for spectators.
To support this work, the Thebans will also work with the British Red Cross to have additional first aid support throughout
the tournament grounds. A dedicated physio tent will be situated at BT Murrayfield for access by all teams with full
physio support from trained professionals that regularly work with both the Caledonian Thebans and SRU. This will also
be complemented by a dedicated space for sports massage providing treatments for players with all levels of support.
The BT Murrayfield grounds are serviced by two nearby hospitals, the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and the Western
General Hospital, both of which are well adept at dealing with sports injuries.

Teams
Caledonian Thebans will look to attract at least two
thirds of the IGR registered teams to Edinburgh for
Bingham 018 - 50 teams or more competing as part
of the tournament. The Thebans will aim to have all UK
and European teams in attendance, working then with
those in North America and the Southern Hemisphere to
support their desires to attend. The Team will maintain
that the makeup of the visitors in Edinburgh emulates
the tournament’s success in bringing a diverse range of
players and supports to come together for rugby.
T o u r n a m e n t C a p a c i t y
In order to ensure the capacity to accommodate desired
numbers, the Thebans have based initial tournament
calculations on the -tier Nashville 016 structure with
games of 0 minute halves (5 minutes for finals), 5
minute half-times, and at least 5 minutes ‘turnaround
time’ between games. On this basis, and with a desire to
accommodate 50 teams, the tournament would require
approximately 50 game slots on both days 1 and of
the tournament. However using 6 pitches with games
commencing at 080, at least 60 game slots are available
each day, giving ample capacity to host games per
team, per day.
On the final day of the tournament pitch capacity
will increase to 7 pitches with the addition of the BT
Murrayfield Stadium, providing more than enough space
for the finals day of the tournament. Caledonian Thebans
also have the full support and logistical expertise of
the Scottish Rugby Union who will work alongside the
Team and the IGR Trustees to ensure a smooth-running
competition for all.
In the event of over-runs (e.g. due to adverse
weather), the very short travel time between teams’
accommodation in Edinburgh city centre and BT
Murrayfield Stadium creates flexibility, in case of a
need for games to start or finish slightly earlier or later
than at previous tournaments. Equally if more than
60 teams wished to attend, the Thebans can access
additional capacity and have already contacted the
management of nearby rugby grounds at Saughton
Park (less than 10mins walk from the tournament
complex) and Meggetland (less than 10mins drive),
who have good-quality facilities and are willing to host
additional matches if required.
W o m e n ’ s T o u r n a m e n t
“I am so excited about the potential prospect of
Edinburgh hosting the Bingham Cup in 018, and the
inclusion of a women’s tournament for the first time.”
Lisa Martin, Captain, Scotland Women’s Team
Over the past 14 years, the Bingham Cup has grown
in scale, reach and impact. With the backing of the
Scottish Rugby Union, Scottish Government and other
national bodies, the Caledonian Thebans will look to
introduce a women’s tournament at Bingham 018.
Women’s rugby union is a much smaller industry
than men’s, and within this is a limited number of
opportunities for both players to play and teams to
find sufficient numbers to compete. This has led to a
community in which inclusivity is part of the course with
players of all abilities and sexual orientations playing
together without issue. The Thebans will look to engage
the growing number of female squads already within
the International Gay Rugby community, inviting them

to compete at this inaugural event and become part of
the family. It is endeavoured the women’s tournament
will have between 4 and 8 teams competing who will
be incorporated into the main playing area and also see
their final take place in the stadium.
R E F E R E E S
As part of the Scottish Rugby Union’s support and
endorsement of the bid, they shall provide referees and
match officials to officiate the tournament’s games, and
have confirmed that sufficient referees will be available
for the tournament. These referees will be taken from
the official pool of referees all training by the SRU and
whom regularly referee matches within Edinburgh and
the surrounding areas. These referees will be briefed to
ensure the safety and fairness of play whilst working to
the tournament rules laid out by IGR.
The SRU have already been provided with the 016
Bingham Cup rules to provide them with awareness and
clarity regarding the tournament and the structure it has
undertaken in the past, and had no concerns.
The Caledonian Thebans will ensure that the
international Society for inclusive Rugby Referees
will also work alongside the SRU referees and any
visiting referees from the LGBTI+ community.
V o l u n t e e r s
Supporting the work of the Caledonian Thebans and the
team at BT Murrayfield, will be a collective of volunteers.
Scotland has a strong history of volunteers supporting
the great sport and arts activities within the country,
most recently seen at the 014 Commonwealth Games
in Glasgow. Working closely with Edinburgh’s rugby
and LGBTI communities, the Thebans will engage and
recruit a variety of individuals who wish to play their
part in Bingham 018 and make the event the best it
can be.
The Caledonian Thebans will ensure that the
International Society for Inclusive Rugby Referees will
also work alongside the SRU referees and any visiting
referees from the LGBTI+ community.
R E G I S T R AT I O N
Caledonian Thebans RFC will seek to maintain
registration prices at a comparable rate to Nashville
016, making sure that the cost of attending the
tournament is kept to a minimum with discounts for
those registering early. The registration process will be
a simple and efficient online process allowing teams to
register together as well as individual registration.
- June 017 Earlybird Registration Opens
- January 018 Earlybird Registration Deadline
- April 018 Standard Registration Deadline
Players wishing to register in May will be allowed at
the discretion of the Caledonian Thebans and IGR, and
may be subject to a higher fee.
Earlybird - Player £15 / Supporter £5
Regular - Player £150 / Supporter £110
The registration process will seek to allow teams
to register dummy players whose names can be
confirmed at a later date and will seek to allow teams
to name these players as close to the tournament as
possible, but must avoid this being a detriment to the
tournament structure planning.
NOTE: Please see appendix for full letter of support regarding referees.

A ceilidh is a Scottish social occasion that combines
folk music and dancing. Matched with Scotland’s
open and friendly attitude, a ceilidh is a great
opportunity for individuals to meet and socialise
with each other in a relaxed and fun environment.
Caledonian Thebans will host the first ever Bingham
Ceilidh in advance of the tournament starting,
providing the chance for rugby brothers and sisters
from around the world to come together for a jig
and a whisky. Don’t worry, all dances are fairly
simple and the live band comes with a “caller” who
provides full instructions on each dance as they
happen, meaning there is no excuse for everyone to
join in no matter what their dancing experience.

Mr Andrew Purchas Chairman International Gay Rugby 71 Holland Road West Ham London E15 3BP
___ 27 July 2016 Dear Mr Purchas As Minister for Public Health and Sport, I write to offer my full support for the bid from Caledonian Thebans Rugby Club to host the 2018 Bingham Cup. Our recently revised national events strategy, Scotland the Perfect Stage, reaffirms the commitment of the Scottish Government and our partners to build a strong and dynamic events industry, producing a portfolio of events and festivals that not only boost our economy and international profile but also further enhance our global reputation as a leader and innovator of best practice in event planning and delivery. It is vital that all of Scotland’s diverse communities are inspired to participate in events and we actively work through partners like Leadership, Equality and Active Participation (LEAP) in sportscotland to tackle the barriers that prevent LGBTI people from fully participating in sport. This work has included the successful Pride House initiatives delivered for both the 2014 Commonwealth Games and 2016 Homeless World Cup; and Scotland was also delighted to host the European Gay and Lesbian Sports Federation General Assembly in March this year. The Bingham Cup not only provides a fantastic opportunity to boost Scottish Rugby and further the aspirations of our national events strategy, it also supports our collective aims around equality by inspiring LGBTI people from near and far to take part in competitive sport at all levels, regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation, and to experience all the benefits that this can bring. In addition, Scotland’s excellent global reputation for event delivery along with our strong actioned focused commitment to furthering LGBTI equality makes us the ideal host for the Bingham Cup in 2018.
AILEEN CAMPBELL
Dear Neil,
I am writing to yourself today with regards to your bid for the Bingham Cup 2018. This is to say that I (Adam Harrison) and the fellow Glasgow Alphas, fully support the Caledonian Thebans bid for the Bingham Cup in 2018.
After building a strong relationship from the beginning of our club, it is
in my personal and professional opinion; that not only is Edinburgh a great venue for the event, but also containing Murrayfield (the national rugby stadium) and its surrounding training pitches to host the games it is an honour to have played and to be able to continue to play here. The changing facilities are of a high standard as they are also used by the Murrayfield Wanderers (a local team who use the facility regularly) and the venue of Murrayfield stadium has played part for years in the development of rugby union nationwide. As Scotland’s first venue for this tournament, I believe this is a particularly good venue.
Also the Scottish nation are (as you may have seen) very forthcoming
with human rights and as so, the locals would love to meet these people from around the world. One of the biggest factors myself, and I am sure others would agree, to my moving across the border into Scotland; was the warming, friendly and helpful locals to the Scottish cities. Kind regards, Adam Harrison Glasgow Alphas Chairman/Player-coach

20 Aug 2015 Owen Greechan Chairman Caledonian Thebans BT Murrayfield Stadium 112 Roseburn Street Edinburgh EH12 5PH Dear Owen Letter of support. Murrayfield Wanderers fully support your bid to host the Bingham Cup in May 2018. Sited at Murrayfield, the International home of Scottish Rugby, our facilities include 4 fully floodlit pitches to the back of the main stadium, one of which is an all weather pitch to 4G standard. Our changing facilities include a showering unit, flanked by 2 sets of 3 changing rooms, plus 2 self-contained changing rooms with showers and toilets built in. There is also a referee changing/showering room. Upstairs, we have our clubrooms and bar with full catering facilities for up to 100 guests on a sit down meal, with a further 100 using the bar. We understand that our landlords the SRU have offered the use of the international pitch and main stadium for the finals, which at full capacity in all seated stadium can hold up to 67,500 spectators with all changing, catering and media services that go with it. Murrayfield Wanderers will assist you, as required in order to make the tournament a success. We believe therefore that if the decision was made to hold the Bingham Cup at Murrayfield, it would take the tournament to the next level and set a standard for others to follow in the future.

As you will be aware, Edinburgh has a great tradition in welcoming the world to this beautiful city, and we have a particularly strong history in hosting rugby events. Every year the famous Murrayfield Stadium hosts the Six Nations series of rugby internationals, as well as countless other prestigious rugby tournaments, such as historically the IRB International Rugby Sevens and the Golden Oldies Rugby Festival. An inclusive rugby event on this scale would be a wonderful addition to Edinburgh’s cultural and sporting offer for 2018, and I think this event would be a particularly good fit for Edinburgh, both with its vibrant gay community and its strong traditions in rugby.
I am confident that all the players and supporters involved in this event will receive a very warm welcome of traditional Scottish hospitality from the people of Edinburgh, and I look forward to hearing of the success of your bid.
Yours etc
Councillor Richard LewisConvener of Culture & SportFestival and Events Champion
