Resume July 2012 Kathleen C. (Kathy) Harris 5 SPECIAL CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE CURRICULUM As An Associate and Full Professor At Cal Poly 2006- 2012 Special Education Coordination responsibilities are shared with Dr. Ruef (i.e. Special

Education consists of Dr. Ruef and myself and functions as a “coordination” or mini department).

2009-2012 In collaboration with Dr. Mike Ruef, I embedded the new California

Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC) standards into the school-based strand of the integrated MA and special education credential program.

2010 With input from Dr. Mike Ruef, I wrote the Special Education Biennial Report required by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC). This activity required that I collect and analyze candidate outcome data and program assessment data, interpret findings, and provide recommendations. 2010 In collaboration with a colleague in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry,

Dr. Seth Bush, I experimented with collaboratively teaching special education graduate students and undergraduate science majors in Dr. Bush’s Learn by Doing Science Lab.

2009-2010 I assisted my colleague, Dr. Mike Ruef, in developing a program that

supported Cal Poly students in Asperger’s syndrome (autism). 2009 I developed two hybrid courses for the Education Specialist Mild/Moderate Level II Program (EDUC 443 and EDUC 548) 2009 In collaboration with my colleague Dr. Mike Ruef, we revised the MA/Education

Specialist Mild/Moderate Level I Program to address changes identified in the 2008 biennial report

2008, 2010 With input from Dr. Mike Ruef, I wrote the special education reports required by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). 2009 In collaboration with Dr. Mike Ruef, I wrote the Special Education Program Assessment document required by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC). 2008 With input from Dr. Mike Ruef, I wrote the Special Education Biennial Report required by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC). 2007 In collaboration with Dr. Mike Ruef, I rewrote the curriculum for the Education

Specialist Level I and II programs to include California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC) mandated English Language Learner (ELL) competencies.

As an Assistant Professor at Cal Poly 2004-2006 Special Education Coordination responsibilities were shared with Dr. Ruef.

(Kathy) Harris 6 2004-2005 In collaboration with Dr. Mike Ruef, I redesigned all special education programs, reducing the number from five to two (as a result of budgetary constraints and consequent loss of faculty). As an Assistant, Associate and Full Professor at Cal State LA and ASU- West Campus I assumed curriculum development and coordination responsibilities at both institutions. While an Assistant and Associate Professor at Cal State LA, I coordinated the Multicultural/Multilingual MA Program, the Joint Doctoral Program in Special Education with UCLA, and Chaired the Special Education Division. While an Associate and Full Professor at ASU – West Campus I was the first special education faculty member hired and assumed responsibility for developing the special education credential program on that campus. (Kathy) Harris 40 GRANTS AND CONTRACTS External-Funded Title: Collaborative High Incidence Personnel Preparation (CHIPP) Dates: 2005-2010 The grant was submitted as an Assistant Professor at Cal Poly. Work on the grant was conducted while an Assistant and an Associate Professor at Cal Poly. Granting Agency: United States Department of Education Amount: $776,818 (distributed over a period of 4 years) Purpose: This grant was awarded under the following competition: Personnel Preparation to Improve Services & Results for Children with Disabilities. The four objectives for the CHIPP grant were: 1) to deliver a high quality research-based curriculum with emphasis on culturally sensitive instruction and management, collaboration, and positive behavior support; 2) to graduate scholars who meet California certification standards in special education for students with high incidence disabilities; 3) to provide training in collaborative strategies to address differentiating instruction and positive behavior support for students with high incidence disabilities; and 4) to monitor, evaluate, disseminate and institutionalize the project. Role: Principal Investigator. I took responsibility for writing and submitting this grant proposal. However, the work for this grant proposal was based on previous grant proposals that Mike Ruef and I submitted but were not funded. Therefore, we equally shared in the award and Mike Ruef is a Project Director on this grant. I assumed responsibility for all of the project objectives listed above and annually reported on progress. I wrote the Annual Progress Reports that were required to obtain funding each year. My responsibilities for each year are listed below: 2005-2006 As An Assistant Professor at Cal Poly • Establish contract and administer contract for scholars who were being supported on the project • Meet with faculty in the SOE to discuss the project and assistance in training in collaborative

strategies that could be provided for their programs • Establish face-to-face interdisciplinary collaborations in school-based field placements with

project scholars, elementary teacher education candidates, elementary teachers and elementary special educators

Ruef and myself. Coordination and other departmental activities include but are not limited to:

o Report Writing: My colleague, Dr. Mike Ruef, and I have been responsible for the writing of all reports for various accrediting agencies, i.e., WASC, the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing, and NCATE. Together these reports equated to several hundred pages of text.

o Candidate Recruitment and Selection: Though my colleague, Dr. Mike Ruef, assumes primary responsibility for conducting information meetings for prospective applicants, we both answer telephone calls, conduct interviews and select qualified applicants.

o Mentor Teacher Recruitment and Selection: We do not have a teacher placement staff person. I am responsible for recruiting qualified special education mentor teachers, arranging school-based placements with districts throughout the county, and supporting mentor teachers who work with our candidates through meetings, phone calls and email communications. In addition, I have developed a School-Based Handbook that is updated annually.

o Advisement: Together with Dr. Mike Ruef, provide initial program planning advisement as well as program advisement for the special education candidates throughout the year, including monitoring candidate progress each quarter).

o Advisory Committee: Dr. Ruef and I meet with the Special Education Advisory Committee at a minimum of once a year. This meeting involves data collection and reporting, arranging the meeting, and providing follow-up based on results of the meeting (e.g., minutes and materials).

o Adjunct Professor Hiring and Support: As we have used adjunct faculty to help deliver our program over the course of our federal grant, Dr. Ruef and I have recruited potential part-time faculty, reviewed resumes of part-time applicants, recommended part-time faculty and supported hired part-time faculty to integrate their teaching with the needs of the special education program as well as the special education course (EDUC 440) for the multiple subject program.

o Program Evaluation and Program Exit Procedures: Dr. Ruef and I have completed all of the procedural paperwork necessary for special education candidates to receive their degrees and teaching credentials (e.g., Advancement to Candidacy, portfolio review, teaching credential exit form) as well as serve as readers for the Special Education Comprehensive Examination administered each year.

o Related Program Administrative Tasks: Dr. Ruef and I have worked collaboratively with the credential analysts, school districts, and County Office of Education. In addition, I have assumed responsibility for developing the Special Education Faculty Workload, with input from Dr. Ruef, every academic year.

o Other: I attend Fall Conference and the Education Graduation Ceremonies every year, hooding candidates receiving their masters degrees.
