UNDERSTANDING

Practical observationWhen observing the Moon in the northern hemisphere a quickglance will let you know if it is waxing or waning. When youcan draw a ‘p’ with an imaginary stroke and the luminouscrescent, the Moon is waxing ; when you can draw a ‘d’ thenthe Moon is waning. In the southern hemisphere, it works theother way round as the image is reversed : when the Moon is

waxing you can draw a ‘d’ and when it is waning a ‘p’. People who live close to the equatorsee the moon lying on its side.

UNDERSTANDING THE MOON

When the Moon is between the Earth and the Sun, its illuminated face is not visible fromEarth, this is the new moon (1) (symbolically represented by a black disk). Then, as it revolvesaround the Earth, it will appear as a crescent which will grow until it is a fully lit disk : at thatpoint, the Moon will be exactly opposite the Sun with the Earth in-between, and that is thefull Moon (2)This of course is the most familiar aspects of the Moon seen from the Earth. It is the synodiclunar cycle which lasts 29 days, 12 hours and 44 minutes and begins with the new moon.

The waxing and waning Moon

UNDERSTANDING

The waxing Moon

Plants increase in vitality with moonlight and as the Full Moon approaches, their resistanceto parasites and diseases increases. Fruits and vegetables harvested at this time store welland impart more vitality when eaten, while cut flowers last longer in a vase. Silage andmown hay are of better quality, compost is warmer and animals are less anxious when thereare people around.

As the moonlight decreases, so does the vigour of plants, although their specific energy isincreased – colours, scents and tastes are more perceptible during this phase, and nutritional andmedicinal properties are more pronounced. However, it is more difficult to store harvestedcrops in their natural state and this phase is more suitable for preserving foods, makingjams and bottling wine. Insecticides and Fungicides are more effective.

The waning Moon

The Moon ‘wanes’ during the phasebetween the Full Moon and the next NewMoon. Every night the illuminated areabecomes smaller. On the calendar (pages56-79), the colour of the blue band dark-ens as the Moon wanes.

The Moon ‘waxes’ during the phase fromNew Moon to Full Moon – the illuminated area increases in sizeevery day. On the calendar (pages 56-79),the colour of the blue band also becomeslighter as the Moon waxes.

601-5_Moon-2013_Cal lunaire 2006 13/06/2012 13:15 Page 3

Many people think that an ascending Moon is the same as a waxing one when infact they are totally different. The Moon ascends and descends over a period of 27 days,7 hours and 43 minutes, this is called the periodic lunar cycle and is akin to the Sun trajectory’sover a whole year. At the end of December (in the northern hemisphere) we see the Sun risein the south-east to set in the south-west, describing a smallish arc in the sky(at noon, the Sun is fairly low on thehorizon). But the following days, all theway to the end of June, it will rise a bitfurther north every day all the way to thenorth-east and similarly set furthernorth-west, describing a much larger arcin the sky (at noon the Sun reaches theZenith). We see the sun rise higher duringthe first half of the year and then lowerin the second half of the year. The Moonhas exactly the same course but itscycle last 27 days, 7 hours and 43minutes.

The ascending and descending Moon

On the calendar on pages 56-79, the narrowcoloured band beneath the date band shows thepath of the ascending and descending Moon inthe northern hemisphere as far as the Tropic ofCancer (to determine the path in the southernhemisphere, south of the Tropic of Capricorn, simply invert the colours). Between the twotropics, there is a regular pattern of inversion(see diagram on the left). The influences of theascending and descending Moon and Sun growsteadily weaker the nearer we get to the Equator.

Therefore, in equatorial regions, it is the influence of the waxing-waning Moon and thetides that predominates. For example, grafting: in Europe, it is the ascending Moon that hasthe strongest effect, but on the equator, it is the combined effect of a waxing Moon and therising tide that should be taken into consideration. In summary, in the northern and southern hemispheres beyond the tropics, the influenceof the ascending and descending Moons is very strong. However, in equatorial areas,it is often the waxing-waning Moon and the tides that predominate.

The fluids within plants rise and fall with the Moon. When the Moon is ascending, plants containmore sap so there is more activity in their aerial parts (those parts above ground). This is agood time, for example, to cut scions, to graft plants and to harvest fruit with a high juicecontent, as well as to collect sap from silver birches, etc. However, it is better to avoid pruningtrees or cutting plants for drying at this time. Cutting lawns when the Moon is ascendingtends to encourage plenty of growth; it is a good time to aerate them.

On the calendar (pages 56-79), theMoon is ascending when it goes fromthe lowest point ( ) to the highestpoint ( ). When the curve rises, theMoon is ascending.

The ascending Moon

On the calendar (pages 56-79), theMoon is descending when it travelsfrom its highest point ( ) to its lowest( ). When the curve falls,

When the moon is descending, the flow of fluids in plants descends also and growth occursmainly in the roots. This is a good time to harvest root crops or the aerial parts of a plantthat you want to dry quickly, and also for pruning, pricking out, re-potting, ploughing, spreading compost or manure and cutting wood. The grass of lawns that are cut at thistime forms stronger roots and anchors the soil better.

Working with the Moon

SOWING: Our trials showed that seedlings aremainly influenced by the constellations, the planetaryaspects and the waxing or waning moon. The role ofthe Moon ascending or descending is secondary. Itmay however be useful to take into account forplants that sprout easily such as summer salads.Sowing during the constellation "Leaves" andwaning moon will delay seedling growth. In conclusion: Always choose the constellationthat corresponds to the purpose sought (roots, leaves, flowers or fruit) if possible with themaximum number of stars, because they arethe combination of both lunar and planetaryinfluences (see the last line curves p.56 to 79).Sow preferably in the morning.

PLANTING AND PRICKING OUT: choosedays when the Moon is descending, ideally lateafternoon – if possible on a day that matchesthat of the plant (fruit, root, flower, leaf).

HOEING: for eradicating weeds see page 33.

IN WET WEATHER: if possible, weed in themorning in a Fire or Air sign when the Moon iswaning.IN DRY WEATHER: weed in the evening, ifpossible, and in an Earth or Water sign when theMoon is waxing.

WATERING: to avoid plants developing shallowroots, instead of watering little and often, waterthem generously but less frequently. The ideal timeis when the Moon is in the descendant and in theconstellation of Virgo, Gemini or Libra. Avoidnodes and the superposition of the sign of Leowith the constellation of Leo.

MULCHING: mulch helps to fertilize and protectthe soil, and limits the evaporation of moistureand weed germination.A variety of materials can be used as mulch, suchas straw, grass cuttings (a thin layer, fresh ordried), composted bark (very effective, a thicknessof 2 or 3 cm/about 1 inch is enough). It is best to mulch when the Moon is waxing andin an Earth or Air sign.Aeration of the soil should ideally be carried outwhen the Moon is ascending; soil decomposesand breaks down more easily (via worms andmicro-organisms) when the Moon is descending.

Every time we work with the soiland the plants, we enable the cosmicenergies to impregnate them. Therefore, it is important to syste-matically choose dates which havea favourable influence on theplants we are growing.

WORKING

601-5_Moon-2013_Cal lunaire 2006 13/06/2012 13:16 Page 18

THE END PRODUCT:When sowing or planting always choose adate matching the part of the plant you wishto harvest (root, leaf, flower, fruit). For instance, choose a ‘root’ day for parsnips, and a ‘fruit’ day for tomatoes.Take endives as an example – sow and hoe

them on dates favourable to ‘root’ plants inorder to help the roots develop well, but, toensure a good crop, harvest them on datesfavourable to ‘leaf’ plants when the Moon isdescending. Their growth should be forcedon a good ‘leaf’ date when the Moon isascending.

THE MOON’S INFLUENCES: choosing theright date for sowing and planting is the mostimportant. If you have sown a crop at an unfavou-rable time, you can reverse the effect to a certaindegree by hoeing at a favourable time.

POTATOES: plant potatoes on a day favourableto ‘root’ plants, but not too close to the perigee. To raise seed potatoes, plant when the Moon is inthe sign of Taurus. To avoid producing green potatoes, earth upwhen the Moon is in an Earth constellation andwhen it is waning and also, if possible, with areceding tide.To remove the eyes (buds) from potatoes thathave been lifted and stored so that they will keeplonger, choose a time when the Moon is waning

and descending, and preferably when it is in theconstellation of Virgo.

GREEN SALAD: always sow green salad in aWater constellation. During spring or summer, choose a waning Moon to prevent the plants fromgoing to seed. In the autumn, sow during a waxingMoon, since many energies are declining thenand this helps to maintain the balance.

STRAWBERRIES: separate and plant out runnersduring the constellation of Leo preferably whenthe sign of Leo is in superposition with the con-stellation of Leo (q) for example, from July 11 at01:00 (GMT) to July 12 at 00:13 (GMT).

Generally, harvest the seeds in dry weather, whenthe moon is waxing, avoiding the first and the lastday of this phase. Also avoid lunar nodes and timeswhen the Moon is squared with either the Sun orwith Saturn.( - ).• Fruits: harvest them on a ‘fruit’ date and wait fora day before extracting the seeds, for instance:

tomatoes harvest on August 10 and extract seedson 11.• Roots: harvest the seeds on a 'root' date.• Flowers: harvest the seeds when the moon is in

the constellations Gemini or Libra.• Leaves: harvest when the moon is in an air or

earth sign.

Harvesting

The calendar (pages 56 to 79) shows a harvestline, with stars for good days (green for aboveground and yellow for below ground).• Effects of the ascending Moon on the harvest:

plants grown for above ground crops harvestedwith an ascending Moon will remain jucier andhave more energetic properties. But for fruitsand vegetables that have a short storage life, the ascending Moon will accelerate ripeningand lead to the crop deteriorating more rapidly.

• Effects of the descending Moon on the harvest:root crops harvested during a descending Moonwill remain firm longer. Ripening is slowed downwhich will allow roots to be kept longer and beless likely to sprout.

• For soft fruits where ripening needs to be sloweddown (strawberries, raspberries, cherries, apricots, peaches, plums…): harvest when the Moon isdescending, avoid the ascending Moon par-ticularly when waxing, also avoid water signsand constellations. ( - -

)

• For squashes and varieties of pumpkins that donot keep well, choose a waxing Moon during thefollowing periods: a ? b ? i ? j ? k ? L ? q? r ? s ? t ? z ?(see the calendar on pages56-79) and if possible pick them during one ofthe following aspects ( -

) see pages 12–14. For example, AUGUST:7* - 8* - 9* - 10* - 11* - 12* - 17 -18SEPTEMBER: 5pm* - 6* - 7* - 8am* - 8pm**- 13pm* - 14 - 15am. (am = morning, pm =afternoon).

• When harvesting root crops, combine the des-cending and waning Moon, except for garlic, onions and shallots which should be harvestedduring a descending and waxing Moon.

We believe that the tides also affect the harvestand their preservation. (see page 14). When theMoon is waxing choose a receding tide and whenit is waning choose a rising tide. Fruits andvegetables that you will consume quickly (greensalads, runner beans, etc. ), should be harvestedin the early morning (dew time) as dew brings

Many factors influence the quality andpreservation of fruits and vegetables afterharvesting. In general, harvest everythingthat grows above the ground during anascending Moon and harvest root cropsduring a descending Moon, avoid the per-igee, lunar nodes and stormy weather. Be aware thatharvesting when the Moon is in a water constellation orsign (Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces) increases the chanceof rotting.

CHARCOALCharcoal reinforces the soil and has a purifying andcleansing effect that prevents cryptogenic diseasesin a localized area. It is particularly efficient at pre-venting the dispersion of spores and seeds. It regu-lates the soil by assisting in the storage of nutrients.Use natural, pulverized, charcoal, mixed with thesoil prior to sowing the seeds, 100 to 150 g/m2.Ideally this should happen during an ascending andwaning moon.

SOOTSoot resulting from burning wood also helps to pre-vent cryptogenic diseases as it protects the livingorganisms in the soil. However do not apply if youhave already used charcoal, or if the soil is veryacid!Mix 200 to 300 g of dry (not wet) soot with 10 litresof water, ideally during a waxing moon (a, b, c, d, i , j,k, l periods), avoiding lunar nodes and Moon-Saturnsquares ( ). Do not use metallic containers, asthese can taint the mixture, instead use wood or

sandstone. Let the mixture steep for several daysstirring every evening; spray on the soil, renewmonthly.

BICARBONATE OF SODABicarbonate of Soda has the ability to stimulate andrebalance chalky soils, resulting in a decrease indiseases.Spray onto the soil at dew time a few weeks beforeseeding, using between 20 to 50 g by litre of water.5 to 10 g per litre can be used directly on plants inthe same way as grapefruit seed extract (seebelow).

GRAPEFRUIT SEED EXTRACT(available commercially)Grapefruit seed extract reinforces and purifiesplants, acting as a disinfectant and fungicide. Sprayon plants at the dates shown in the Fungicidetables, using 35 to 40 drops per litre of water, oreven 50 drops to avoid mildew. Renew every 10 to15 days, and after rain.

Plants diseases

Plant-based decoctions A plant-based decoction used as a liquid fertilizer provides a natural way of feeding plants andpreventing certain diseases. Those made from stinging nettle or comfrey are best known, but otherplants can be used such as horsetail, camomile, marigold, achillea or dandelion, either individuallyor in combination.

On the whole, diseases can be avoided orat least contained through a good soilbalance and intense biological activity(microbes and roots). It is essential to stimu-late and restructure the soil with the helpof living matter. For instance, green fertilizeris one of the best way to obtain such aresult. Using 'young' compost can alsogenerate beneficial results in the soil, except for vegetables which require a

'mature' compost. In most cases, this intensification of soillife will give enough energy to the plantsto avoid disease. Plant decoctions also actas a preventative against diseases (seenext chapter). Some other products alsohave a healthy effect on the soil and helpprevent diseases. Here are some of theones we have been testing with successagainst oidium and mildew.

601-5_Moon-2013_Cal lunaire 2006 14/06/2012 16:04 Page 28

29

WORKING

Whichever plant you choose, the process for making liquid fertilizer remains the same. Cut up thefresh plants into small pieces and soak them in water (use 1 kg/2 lb of plants per 10 litres/15 pints ofwater) and leave it to steep for between one and four weeks – use a wooden or stoneware container,or even plastic if necessary, never use a metal container. Stir the liquid from time to time to help it fer-ment; then filter out the plant pulp. Use the resulting liquid fertilizer diluted in the proportion of 1:10–20,as appropriate.

WHEN TO MAKE A PLANT DECOCTION

• To protect against fungal disease: beginmaking the decoction when the Moon is wax-ing and, if possible, when it is also descending.The Moon in conjunction, sextile and trine withthe Sun ( ) as well as superposition(q), will improve its effectiveness even more.Favourable dates are: MARCH: 22 - 24 before16:00 - APRIL: 15pm - 20 - 18 - 21am -MAY: 15 -17pm - 18am - 20pm - JUNE: 14 before 17:00 -19am - JULY: 8 after 08:00 - 11 - 13pm - 18 -AUGUST: 7 - SEPTEMBER: 5pm - 10 - OCTOBER:5am - 9pm. If you also take into account theinfluence of the rising tide on these dates (seep16), the result will be even better (am = morn-ing, pm = afternoon).

• To use as a plant feed: begin making thedecoction when the Moon is waxing, and ifpossible when it is also ascending. The Moonin conjunction, sextile and trine with the Sun( ) will strengthen its influence. Very favourable dates are: APRIL: 10pm - MAI:10am - AUGUST: 16 after 13:00 - OCTOBER: 14am- (am = morning, pm = afternoon). Make themost of the receding tide on these dates toimprove the result even more. Liquid fertilizermade from plants should preferably be usedwhen the Moon is descending and, if possible, when it is also on the wane.

DECOCTION OF STINGING NETTLE • To use as a fertilizer follow the instructions top

left, leave the nettles to steep in water for threeweeks and then dilute in the proportion of 1:10if it is to be spread on the soil, but in at least1:20 if it is to be sprayed on leaves.

• To prevent fungal diseases, let the mixturesteep for a week and then dilute it in the pro-portion of 1:15–20. The fresh plant can also beused – for example, when potting up tomatoes, put a handful of nettles in the planting hole.

DECOCTION OF COMFREY A decoction made from comfrey helps combattomato whitefly, but comfrey really comes into itsown as a fertilizer. Fresh leaves can be laid on thesoil surface, wilted leaves can be dug into thesoil, or it can be used in a liquid fertilizer. To makethe liquid feed, soak the leaves in water (see topleft this page) for two to four weeks and thendilute in the proportion of 1:10 if applying itdirectly to the soil or 1:20 if spraying it on leaves.

Influence of the phases

LIVING WITH THE MOON

NEW MOON • The renewal of physical energy is at a minimum during this phase.• Good time to begin eliminating a bad habit.• Excellent day for fasting as detoxification is at its peak on that day.

WAXING MOON• We express ourselves more easily and freely.• The body makes the most effective use of the nutri ents that it receives during this

phase.• If you tend to put on weight, this is a time to be particularly frugal..• This is an ideal time to learn new skills or to start new projects.

FULL MOON• Our physical energy levels are restored during this phase.• When the nights are lighter sleep can be interrupted, and insomnia can be an

issue.• The extra energy and excitement caused by the Full Moon can be channelled into

physical activities.• Now is a good time to undertake a project.• Some of the effects of the Full Moon and the New Moon can be felt for two or

three days.

WANING MOON • This is a good time for introspection, reflection and spirituality.• Choose this phase to follow a detox programme; it promotes the

elimination of toxins from the body.

Do not use the information contained in this chapter as aAsubstitute for medical advice. If you think you have a medical problem, consult your doctor.

The dates marked in this table ( , ), especially the starred ones, are highly favourable for hair.Take note of them, even if you have no particular hair problems.

Your hair is also influenced by the Moon. The timechosen for a cut will therefore have an impact onyour hair’s vitality and growth. The table below summarizes for quick referencethe best dates and times of day on which to cuthair.

The removal of unwanted hair is best performed when the Moon is descending; if combined with the wan-ing Moon, regrowth will be slower. Slow down regrowth even more by choosing certain planetary aspects.

Depilation

• For more manageable hair, choose datesmarked in green when the Moon is waxing.

• For a perm, choose the superpositions of signand constellation (j) or (s) (seecalendar pages 56-79), if possible with a waningMoon. It sets better when the Moon is waxingbut the hair suffers more damage.

• Hair coloured when the Moon is ascendingand waxing will achieve better results.

• To help hair grow quickly, cut it when theMoon is ascending and waxing.

• If you tend to have split ends and/or you wantyour hair to grow less quickly, we recommendthat you have it cut on the following days:
