General Precautions

Power SourceAttach the CL-2500 SSP to an AC power source only of the typeand voltage described in these operating instructions or as markedon the rear panel of the unit.

AC Cord Wall-EndThe CL-2500 SSP is equipped with a polarized, 3-pin AC powerplug that will fit into the AC outlet only one way. If you areunable to insert the plug fully into the outlet, do not defeat thedirectional plug by breaking off its rounded ground pin.

Instead, use a three-hole female to two-prong male adapter ob-tainable in any hardware or electronics store. Be sure to utilizethe adapter plug’s “ground ring,” and fasten it to the outlet’scover plate attachment screw.

The CL-2500 SSP is designed to be operated in a “grounded”state; that is, connected by its three-wire, three-prong AC cordto your household’s AC earth ground. Defeating this ground con-nection may impact performance and possibly render the all-metal unit more vulnerable to static discharge shock from theuser’s hand. If the unit’s connection to ground is defeated bynecessity, i.e., grounded outlets are not present in household, requiring use of two-pin adapter or two-prong cord:

• TAKE CAUTION to discharge accumulated static fromhand/body to some other inert metal object prior to

touching the CL-2500 SSP faceplate controls, or use theremote control as much as possible if strong static condi-tions are present in your listening environment. Even unfeltstatic discharges can affect the CL-2500 SSP’s internalmicroprocessors.

• If you suspect that static may have discharged to thefaceplate, turn the CL-2500 SSP off, unplug its AC cordfrom the rear of the player or outlet, and allow to remainoff and unplugged for one minute to completely clear anddischarge. Re-plug the AC cord and turn the unit back on.Normal function should resume thereafter.

Non-Use PeriodsWhen left unused for a long period of time, the unit should bedisconnected from household AC. It is recommended that theCL-2500 SSP be plugged into a UL (or similar) compliant surgeand spike protection device, preferably of high quality with sepa-rate isolated ground paths.

CAUTION: Do not entrust the CL-2500 SSP nor any system com-ponents to protective devices when environmental conditionsor public utility problems exist or are suspected. Occasionally, lightning, brownouts, and extreme spikes or surges can not onlyoverwhelm your protective device, but can override a systemcomponent’s internal fusing and do serious damage. Use therear panel switch to turn off your equipment when you are notpresent to monitor conditions. Please reference the conditionsstipulated in the limited warranty policy.

Page 11: Cal Cl2500ssp

INTRODUCTION 3

Installation Conditions

EnvironmentThe operating temperature range of the CL-2500 SSP is 41- 95° F(5-35° C). Operating humidity is 5% to 90% (no condensation).Do not operate the unit when ambient temperatures and/or hu-midity are outside of this range.

CondensationMoisture may form on the display lens due to temperature orhumidity extremes, or as relates to following:

• Immediately after a heater has been turned on• When the unit is moved from a cold environment into a

warm one• If placed too close in proximity to a heat source such as a

radiator etc.If moisture forms inside the unit, it may not operate properly. Tocorrect the problem, move the product away from the heatsource, turn the unit’s power on and allow approximately onehour for the moisture to evaporate before operating the unit.

PlacementAs the CL-2500 SSP is a critical processing component, it mustbe mounted on a stable, non-resonant and vibration-free sur-face and outside the dispersion paths and magnetic fields of yourloudspeakers. DO NOT place the CL-2500 SSP directly atopany device that emits heat or vibration (i.e., transformers, ampli-fiers), nor in the path of direct sunlight.

Allow adequate air circulation (4” minimum surround) to pre-vent excess internal heat buildup. Keep the CL-2500 SSP apartfrom FM or cable TV coaxial antenna leads to minimize recep-tion interference.

PrecautionsMake all connections to and disconnections from the CL-2500SSP with AC Power disconnected and all system componentsswitched “OFF.”

Commence installation with the CL-2500 SSP’s AC cord discon-nected and the unit removed from power, with all other systemcomponents turned off, until all interconnects are installed.

Whenever the CL-2500 SSP is connected to AC power and therear panel switch is “ON,” it is indeed “live,” and in Standbymode. Turning the Front Panel Power Switch ON or OFF togglesthe SSP between “ON” and “Standby.”

MaintenanceClean the CL-2500 SSP faceplate, control buttons and chassisonly with a soft, lint-free cotton cloth (like a well-worn, oft-washed T-shirt), lightly moistened with a mild detergent solu-tion.

Do not use any abrasive pad, scouring powder nor solvent-con-taining spray cleaners, (especially anything including alcoholand benzine) on the player.

DEFAULT AUDIO SETUP 21

Set Front Speakers

The SSP will always assume you have front left and rightspeakers; however, you will need to select the size of yourspeakers. Turn the Select Knob to set the Front Speakers toone of the following:• SMALL — For bookshelf speakers or small satellite

speakers. This option places a filter in the path of thesignals sent to your front speakers. This filter removesany low frequency content and reroutes it to thesubwoofer, which is designed to handle low frequencysignals.

• LARGE — For floor standing speakers. This optioncauses the front speakers to receive the entire band-width of the signal—both the low notes and the highnotes. You may want to experiment with the Smallsetting because it may result in an overall smootherbass response if you are also using a subwoofer. If youselected “OFF” for the subwoofer setting above, yourfront speakers will receive a wide bandwidth signal.

Press Enter to continue.

Set Center Speakers

Turn the Select Knob to set Center Speaker Size to one of thefollowing:• NONE – Use if you do not have a center channel

loudspeaker. This reroutes the center channel signal tothe left and right front speakers, resulting in a “Phan-tom Center channel image” between your frontspeakers.

• SMALL – Use if you have a physically small loud-speaker designed to sit on top of your TV. As with thefront channel speakers, selecting Small inserts a filter in

Page 30: Cal Cl2500ssp

22 CL-2500 SSP USER’S GUIDE

the center channel signal path and reroutes the bass toyour subwoofer (or front channel speakers, whicheveris best suited to handle such signals).

• LARGE – Use if your center channel speaker is capableof handling bass frequencies and you want it to get afull range signal.

Press Enter to continue.

Set Surround Speakers

Turn the Select Knob to set Surround Speaker Size to one ofthe following:• NONE - If you do not have any rear channel speakers.• SMALL - If you want to redirect the bass signals away

from your small rear channel speakers.• LARGE - If you want to send a wide bandwidth signal

to the rear speakers.Press Enter to continue.

Set Dynamic CompressionYou can compress the dynamic range of the playback signalfor movies or music sources recorded in Dolby Digital for-mat. The dynamic range is the level difference between thequietest and loudest parts of a movie. For example, you maywish to reduce the dynamic range if you are watching amovie with loud explosions or if you are in an apartmentbuilding. Compression also increases the level of very quietpassages, such as soft dialog when the master volume is setlow. Turn the Select Knob to set Compression to one of thefollowing:

4

Page 31: Cal Cl2500ssp

DEFAULT AUDIO SETUP 23

• NONE - Maintains full dynamic range.• MEDIUM - Provides less compression than the “High”

setting, but still limits the dynamic range• HIGH - Provides maximum reduction of dynamic

range.Note: The compression setting has no effect on signals frommusic CDs or DTS encoded materials. The incoming signalformat is indicated by LEDs on the SSP Front Panel.Press Enter to continue.

Set Listening ModeTurn the Select Knob to set the Listening Mode to one of thefollowing. Note: For a complete description of each Listen-ing Mode, please refer to Chapter 6, Operations.

• 5.1 DIGITAL SURROUND• DSP BYPASS• STEREO• 5-CHANNEL MATRIX• STADIUM• SYMPHONY HALL• JAZZ CLUB• MONO CENTER CHANNEL• PHANTOM CENTER CHN• STEREO 3 CHANNEL• DOLBY DIGITALPress Enter to continue.

24 CL-2500 SSP USER’S GUIDE

Set Crossover FrequencyYou can select the frequency at which signals are dividedbetween the Subwoofer and any speakers set to “SMALL.”Turn the Select Knob to set the default Crossover Frequencyto one of the following:

• 60-140HZ (10HZ increments) - For most speakers, aCrossover Frequency of 80 Hz, 90 Hz or 100 Hz willresult in the best sound. For very, very small speakershigher settings will work best.

• NONE – Crossover Frequency is turned off.

Press Enter to continue.

Set Channel DelaysFor optimum multichannel sound, all speaker signals shouldarrive at the listener simultaneously; however, this will onlyhappen if the loudspeakers are the same distance from thelistener. This is usually not practical given the location offurniture and walls in your listening room.

To compensate, the CL-2500 SSP allows you to delay thesignals from the center and rear speakers so they will notarrive before the signals from the front left and right speak-ers. Sound travels about 1 foot per millisecond, so if yourcenter channel speaker is 5 feet closer to you than your frontleft speaker, it will arrive 5 milliseconds to soon. To com-pensate, you should set the center channel delay to 5 milli-seconds. The quick rule of thumb: For every foot closer thecenter or rear speaker is, add 1 millisecond of delay.

6

7

Page 33: Cal Cl2500ssp

DEFAULT AUDIO SETUP 25

The options for center channel delay are 0,1,2,3,4 or 5 mil-liseconds. The options for rear channel delay are 0,5,10,15milliseconds. Select the option closest to the delay that willwork best with your room/speaker setup:

• Set Center Delay — Turn the Select Knob to set theCenter Delay to 0-5 milliseconds (ms) in 1 ms incre-ments, then press Enter.

• Set Left Rear Delay — Turn the Select Knob to set theLeft Rear Delay to 0-15 milliseconds (ms) in 5 msincrements, then press Enter.

• Set Right Rear Delay — Turn the Select Knob to set theRight Rear Delay to 0-15 milliseconds (ms) in 5 msincrements, then press Enter.

Example:

Let’s say when I measure the distance from my front rightspeaker to my favorite listening chair I get 10 feet, then Imeasure the distance from my center channel speaker tomy listening chair and I get 7 feet. I will need 3 mil-liseconds of delay to compensate for the differenceof 3 feet.

Using the Noise Generator (Test Tone)To help you set channel level trims, the CL-2500 SSP isequipped with a Noise Generator, also known as “test tonegenerator.” The Noise Generator outputs a calibrated testsignal to the front, center and rear channel speakers. Usethe Noise Generator with a sound pressure level (SPL) meterfor excellent channel balance settings and a more envelop-ing sound stage.

Turn the Select Knob to set the Noise Generator to:• OFF – Disables the Noise Generator.• ON – Enables the Generator.Press Enter to continue.

8

Using the Noise Generator with a Sound Pressure Level (SPL) Meter

surround speakers. When measuring the surroundchannels, you may need to point the SPL meter atthe speaker that is playing for a more accuratereading.

Because the subwoofer level will be programmaterial dependent, you will probably want tostart with the nominal zero setting and adjust itafter you have listened to both movies and music. You will probably find you want to customize thesubwoofer level setting for each preset. In gen-eral, movies will have a subwoofer level about10dB higher than the level needed for stereomusic reproduction.

When the Noise Generator is enabled, each timeyou press the Enter button the SSP will advance tothe next speaker and play the calibrated testsignal. The Noise Generator is not available onthe subwoofer output. Place the meter in theprime listening seat at about ear height pointedtoward the TV. Start the Noise Generator for theleft front channel and write down the reading. Then press the Enter button to move the testsignal to the next channel and check the readingfor the center channel speaker. Adjust the trim forthe center channel so that the SPL meter reads thesame value as it did for the left front speaker.Repeat this process for the right front and for both

Page 35: Cal Cl2500ssp

DEFAULT AUDIO SETUP 27

Set Channel (Trim) LevelsSounds should accurately track the action on screen andoriginate from the proper locations in the sound field aroundthe listener. But, if your rear loudspeakers are different fromyour front or center speakers, you may experience differentlevels of playback. In addition, the balance between thesubwoofer and the five main speakers will be dramaticallyaffected by the acoustics of your listening room and theplacement of your speakers. To compensate for these differ-ences, the CL-2500 SSP is equipped with level trims for eachaudio channel. We recommend that you use the built-inNoise Generator, a sound pressure level (SPL) meter, andcritical listening to set these trims, and to ensure that allchannels are equally loud. See the next section for details.

• Set Left Level — Turn the Select Knob to set the LeftFront Speaker Level to –12.5 to +12.5 dB in 0.5 dBincrements. Press Enter to continue.
