The last night I saw my father, it was an unusually warm night for March. We had spent the night discussing his living situation, with which he was not happy. He was born and raised in the Wi l l i a m s b u rg s e c t i o n o f Brooklyn and still resided there in a tiny converted apartment surrounded by people he didn’t like or particularly trust. He said he didn’t like the neighborhood anymore; the people were different and he wanted to move. He called my sister, Lynn, in Pennsylvania and a friend of his from the Bronx; they both said he could stay with them, however, he was not allowed to bring his beloved dog, “Louie”, a 130 lb. pit bull.My father was born in 1942 to

Lillie and Thomas Savino. He served in the Navy for nine (9) years and was married three (3) t imes producing f ive (5) daughters, Lynn, Valerie, Jessica, Natalie and Heather, and three (3) grandchildren, Erica, Brea and Ashley, all who miss him immeasurably.He was a pilot, a lifelong motorcycle rider and an animal lover. He spelled his mane “Jon”, because he said the “h” was a waste. He was kind and had a very gentle spirit. He would help anybody that needed help and he was drawn to the broken people in life. He had compassion for the people who couldn’t seem to catch a break. I think my father felt like he could never catch a break.My father was also a recovering heroin addict and had the AIDS virus. At the time of his death, he was completely off the heroin and methadone for the first time in many years. I was very proud of him and I told him he should be very proud of himself, because n o t m a n y p e o p l e c o u l d accomplish that. Continued on page 3

Who We AreThe majority of the board members of CitizensAgainst Homicide have had a family member murdered. They are surviving the devastatingloss of a loved one and still suffer the continued emotional trauma of coping with our criminaljustice system. We have joined together to createa voice for the survivors and friends of murder victims.

CAH ObjectivesAssist families through the complicated criminaljustice system.

Provide trial and courtroom support to victims.Accompany victims to parole hearings in their endeavor to keep the convicted murderer in prison.Provide information on pending crime legislation.

Protecting Your Own InterestsYou can’t prepare for the event that makes you a victim. You can only react. You need to knowhow to deal with the subsequent trial, sentencing and unavoidable parole hearings. CAH helps you take action to protect your own interests.

This was a heinous crime that destroyed not only Susan’s young life, but the lives of her parents, her grandparents (one of whom died just two months after Susan’s death), her brother and sister, her friends, and countless other people who loved and cared for her.

The heinous nature of Simon Macias’s cowardly violence makes it highly likely that if released he will commit additional acts of terror.
