NORTH 2017

ARTISTS OF THE

Calender EventsArtist of the North

One of the major exhibitions for the year continues to be The Artists of the North. Running from Friday 7 April to Sunday 23 April inclusive. This exhibition marks the 13th in the series and is themed this year as, "Hot, Wet and Steamy in the Tropics." Now that is a theme to conjure with.

Tanks Arts Centre presents

CAIRNS ART SOCIETY

FRIDAY 7 - SUNDAY 23 APRIL

The theme for the 12th Artists of the North exhibition, “Hot, wet and steamy in the tropics”, asks our regional artists to explore what is often a love-hate relationship with the extremes of summer in the tropics.

All the senses are roused as the

monsoonal trough plunges, bringing long hot days and nights, downpours for weeks, floods, cyclones and huge ballooning storm clouds.

Three Graces, Zita Sudnika

Show your stuff at The Making Place17 March 2017

Talented locals are invited to share their skills as part of this year’s Cairns Festival.

The Making Place will be a key feature of Cairns Festival 2017, hosting an eclectic mix of entertainment and activities.

“The Making Place was introduced last year and we’re looking forward to bringing it back in 2017,” said Cairns Regional Council’s Cultural Services Committee Chair Cr Linda Cooper.

“It’s a dedicated space on the Esplanade where visitors will find musicians, performers, multicultural activities, artists and a host of interactive workshops. “It will be a place to experience the best of what our community has to offer.

“We’d love to hear from anyone who would like to share their talent, skills or ideas as part of The Making Place.”

The theme for this year’s Cairns Festival Grand Parade is “Shine” and this will flow into the myriad events that will fill the 2017 program.

“The Making Place, in particular, will give our community the chance to glow, beam and radiate the warmth of our cultures – we look forward to sharing and celebrating what makes you sparkle,” Cr Cooper said.

The Making Place will operate from Monday 28 August until Friday 1 September on the Western Events Lawn, near the Esplanade lagoon, and will incorporate the Festival Main Stage.

Applications to be part of The Making Place are now open until Thursday 13 April. For more information or to submit an application, visit www.cairns.qld.gov.au/festival.

The objectives of Cairns Festival are to:

Foster and build community spirit Nurture creativity in the region by providing a stage to showcase talent Build awareness and appreciation of the Cairns region and its creative venues

through providing a range of free and ticketed experiences Develop the cultural tourism market in Cairns

Cairns Festival will be held from 25 August to 3 September 2017 and is presented by Cairns Regional Council.
