Cain & Abel

Cain

Cain and His OfferingEve gave birth to Cain and he was a tiller (farmer) of the ground. Genesis 4: 1-2Cain was the first born. Cain brought the grain (fruit of the ground) as an offering unto the LORD. Genesis 4:3The LORD did not respected Cains offering. How is Cain described? I John 3:10-12 Cain was a child of the devil and his works were evil.

Genesis 4:1-5 And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD. And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground. And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD. And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering: But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.

I John 3:10-12

In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother. For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another. Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother's righteous.

4Abel

Abel and His OfferingEve gave birth to Abel and he was a keeper of sheep. Genesis 4: 1-2Abels offering was the first born of his flock. Genesis 4:4The God respected Abels offering. Hebrews 11:4Abel offered his sacrifice in faith, testifying of his righteousness before God

Genesis 4:1-5

And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD.

Hebrews 11:4

By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh. 6What are the Differences Between the Two Sacrifices?Abel brought the first of his flock unto God for an offering. The God had respect for Abel because of his offering. Cain brought the grain (fruit of the ground) as an offering unto God.The God had no respect for Cain and his offering.

Genesis 4; 1-5

And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD.

7Sacrifices1 Samuel 15:22Proverbs 15:8Proverbs 21:31 Samuel 15:22

And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.

Proverbs 15:8

The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD: but the prayer of the upright is his delight.

Proverbs 21:3

To do justice and judgment is more acceptable to the LORD than sacrifice.

All of these point to Gods desire for a pure heart rather than sacrifices. While God is pleased with sacrifices offered rightly, if they are done with the wrong motives they are rejected.

8God Accepted Abel and His Sacrifice and Not CainsAbel brought the first and the best of his flock and gave it with a cheerful heart.Cain brought some grain or fruit but not described as the first fruits. Cains attitude toward the sacrifice was the reason it was rejected.Cains ReactionCain was angry at God.God cautioned him to do the right thing and to endure that sin did not rule over him.Cain ignored Gods warning and chose to sin and murder his brother.Cain lied to God and said he did not know and turned the questioning back to God.Cain murdered his brother out of jealousy.10Cains Reaction

Gods Reaction to Cains sinGod cursed the ground so that it would not yield for Cain.God condemned Cain to be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth.God demonstrated mercy on Cain.Cain responded by telling God his punishment was too great and ask for mercy. Cain feared that someone would find him and kill him.

God set a mark on Cain and promised avenge sevenfold on anyone who would take his life for revenge for Abel murder.12Cain & AbelThe effects of the Fall came fast and furious. It doesnt take long for sin to corrupt. The first murder. The first generation after Adam and Eve we see:JealousySelfishnessHateGod had mercy on Cain. 13
