Alice Werner #326 Alice was born and raised in Canada. Her husband was also originally from Canada. She met her husband in California when she went to visit a mutual friend who was sick in the hospi-tal. After dating him for about a year, they got married in Canada. They were married for approximately 56 years. They owned a 3 ½ acre farm on Foster Road in Portland for 25 plus years. They were the first to have pure bred Symatal cows in Oregon. They also had geese and chickens. Her husband passed away about 3 years ago. Alice has 4 sons: her oldest is a lawyer, one son has two restaurants in Boise Idaho, and one lives in Loma Linda California, while her youngest son lives in Beaverton. Her greatest accomplishments in life have been her 4 sons and 8 grandchildren. She not only worked on the farm and raised her sons; she also worked as a certified nurse’s aide for a number of years. She worked at Gresham Com-munity Hospital and also worked for about a year at the Village Healthcare and Rehab. Alice enjoys sewing and staying busy with friends.

Kathie Duff #72

Kathie was raised in Boring, OR. “Not really

boring, but a great place to grow up.” Her Dad worked at Reynolds Aluminum in Troutdale and her mom was a homemaker. Her older sister and twin brother kept them busy. Her first car was a 1962 Rambler that she bought for $500 from her sister-in-law’s grandmother. She lived in her condo in Milwaukie, OR for 16 years before moving into the Village. Kathie claims all her nieces and nephews as her own kids and their kids her grandkids. Kathie has had numerous jobs in life. Two jobs she liked the most were office and payroll for cutting room employees at the Pendleton woolen mills and pharmacy tech for an independent pharmacy at the Adventist Hospital. Her greatest accomplish-ments have been attending college full time and working part time for 2 years. Her life has been extremely busy and rewarding. Her hobbies are painting in oils, water colors, pen and ink drawings and making costume jewelry.

Season’s Greengs from the Village Café,

Our new weekend cook made it through November with many compliments on the dishes he has made. We are so happy to hear

that. Good job, Kyle!

Local produce is limited now that winter is approaching, so we will focus on the bounty of the season as much as possible. You will

noce a few new dishes this month: Creamy Succotash Chicken or Chick and Indian Spiced Chicken or Chik with Cauliflower. Both dishes

will be mild and savory and I encourage you to try them.

Now that the weather is o-en cool and wet, you may be hungry but not want to go out to get lunch. Remember, we deliver at no

extra cost. I do encourage you to come to the café for lunch even if the weather is blustery because eang with friends and others is good

for digeson and overall wellness. Also, I love a full and lively café at lunch me!

Our Special Dinner for the season will be on Thursday, December 20th

. This is a great event to invite your family and friends to. We

will be serving a tradional turkey dinner and a holiday vegetarian roast just as we did for the Thanksgiving Special Dinner.

Christmas Day will be a typical café day. I encourage you to come and dine with us if you are not going anywhere else. If you are planning

on having family come with you for lunch, kindly let me know in advance so I can provide the best service possible.. Sue

Happy Holidays! It’s hard to believe that Christmas 2018 is here already. Time truly does seem to fly by faster every year! My church choir is working hard preparing its annual Christmas program, there’s an electricity in the air and looking around, there appears to be more neighborhood Christmas light displays than I’ve seen the last few years. The Village is looking particularly festive with its lights and Christmas trees lit up in peoples windows. With the shorter days, it helps to have the darkness filled with beautiful lights. November was a fun-filled month at the Village with our trip to Hood River WAAAM, our Veteran’s Day Program and a wonderful Thanksgiving Dinner. I hope you’ll take advantage of going out with us to a breakfast, lunch or dinner sometime soon. We have a lot of laughs and it’s a great opportunity to really get to know each other, besides the excitement of trying different restaurants! Please sign up early for the outings—I should have the sign up sheet out a couple of weeks before the event. I’m really looking forward to the outing to Aspen Meadows in Colton for their Celebration of Lights, which we’re offering twice. Being a musician, I can’t help but enjoy the music of the season more than almost anything else. It’s amazing the wealth of music that has been written over the centuries in honor of Christ’s birth! Corbett Middle School will bring their choir and ukulele ensemble to entertain us on the 13th and please make sure to come to our Village Community Christmas Carol Singalong on Monday, Dec. 17th—hopefully we’ll have enough time to sing everyone’s favorites.

Village Food Ministry

Nancy Armintrout is coordinating the Food Ministry here at The Village. We are so thankful to Sanctuary

Church for bringing us the food on Thursdays. Any contributions that are received for them for the food goes to them

so they can continue to bring more food to us. We are so fortunate to receive the generous amount of food and

produce donated each week. Any contributions for the bread goes to Franz so we can continue to receive the bread.

Please remember to contribute. Thank you Nancy and her helpers for coordinating this ministry for us.

Don’t miss out on

these wonderful programs!

Dear Village Community,

We are at that time of year when we can celebrate Christmas with those we love. Christmas time holds many

warm and wonderful memories for us. We can make Jesus Christ the center of our celebrations and our lives; He is

worthy of our love and our worship.

In John 1: 1-18, the Apostle brings a clear and timeless portrait of Jesus and provides us with much food for

thought and good motivation for celebration.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God.

All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.

And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it. John 1: 1-5

Merry Christmas!

St. Nicholas Day, December 6th

In many places St. Nicholas is the main gift giver. His feast day, St. Nicholas Day, is December 6, which falls early in the Advent season. Some plac-es he arrives in the middle of November and moves about the countryside, visiting schools and homes to find out if children have been good. Oth-er places he comes in the night and finds carrots and hay for his horse or donkey along with chil-dren's wish lists. Small treats are left in shoes or stockings so the children will know he has come.

Wow! It’s December. How did that hap-

pen? I have been working on my Christ-

mas cards, because last year they should

have been called New Year’s cards. My

goal is to start earlier this year.

~

I want to invite you to join Anne and me

on Dec 3rd at 1:00 here in the Community

Building. We will take a look back at the

year. Come enjoy yummy treats and

share your favorite memory of 2018. ~

FOUNDATION NEWS

Do you remember when it was December

1999 and all the talk about all the negative

things that were going to happen at mid-

night of December 31, 1999? Thank good-

ness nothing major happened. I am so

thankful that I am working here and can cel-

ebrate all the good things about The Village

Foundation. We have been blessed with our

cups overflowing and now we can bless

you. Remember, if you have a special need

please let us know. Whether it is on a

monthly basis or a one-time need, we are

here to help you through the crisis. We are

beginning another on-going event, “Change

It Up”, empty your pockets of change and

bring to the office where we have a large

container you dump it into to. Let’s see how

fast the container fills up. Wishing you and

your family a very heartfelt Merry Christmas!

Dear Residents,

Christmas time is here!. I hope all of you had a great Thanksgiving. It was good to read on our Thankful-ness wall of the many things you are thankful for. As we extend that thankfulness into the Christmas Season, there seems to be even more to be thankful for. What a festive time of year. A time to remember those around us with gifts and goodness, whether they be gifts of joy and peace or even a smile, a greeting or a handshake. All symbols of our love and care for each other. Thank you for your caring and concern all year long. Our Christmas Dinner this year is on December 20. We look forward to seeing each of you there. We will be featuring our traditional Christmas Dinner. You are welcome to bring your family and friends and join us. If you wish to bring a group, please let us know ahead of time so we can be sure to have a place ready for you. It is best if you can come in together so we can seat you together. Remember to sign up before the deadline. And don't forget that our cafe is open on Christmas Day. We don't want anyone eating alone on the Holiday. Come and join your friends in the cafe.

Our remodels are going well. # 96 will be ready by the end of the month, with #25 following in January. They will continue working on numbers 109 and 67. Our staff is busy doing landscaping and making things festive for the Holidays. We are working at replacing sidewalk sections as our schedule allows.

I would like to remind you that it is The Village policy that staff do not accept gifts or tips of any kind. Please do not offer them anything. All staff are paid by The Village for the jobs that they do. Thank you for your caring and the opportunity to serve you here.

It has been good to see so many of our trips and activities attended well. Please post the calendar where you can see it regularly so you don't miss out on any of the fun activities planned. If you don't sign up, some of the trips aren't able to have enough participants to go. If you don't come you miss out. Be sure to sign up by the deadlines.

Please remember to use the east entrance when exiting The Village by car to go towards Gresham. It is much safer to use than the west entrance. And with these dark evenings, please remember that it is hard for cars to see you if you are walking. Be extra careful !

Our Thankfulness Wall this month asks the question? "What do you feel you can do to help achieve a peace-ful world for all? " Stop by and see what others have written and share your thoughts.

Merry Christmas! Dennis
