As any photographer knows, light comes in different strengths and contexts. It can be dawning or fading - and then there is perpetual light, the light of heaven. Celestial light is a feature of our choral festival this season, though the more terrestrial kinds are there too. Vaughan Williams’ Lark was ascending towards the sky, but was still earthbound. The Lux aeterna of Victoria’s and Fauré’s Requiems has a different glow. We all rejoice to see the light of day, with its sense of joining us to worlds we cannot see and there is surely no more inspiring subject to sing about. Peter Phillips Artistic Director

An Evening with Tony Benn
The veteran Labour politician Tony Benn talks about his life in politics and what he thinks about the changes in the Labour party.
Expect an evening of frank responses and entertaining political anecdotes. This is a welcome sequel to his original legendary theatre tour.
“I think people are fed up with sound bites, spin, sensation and scandal from politicians. What people really want is a chance to discuss issues that affect all our lives, the things that really matter, and that we have a discussion in a sensible, uninterrupted and civilised manner” says Benn, adding “A theatre is an excellent venue for this kind of intimate evening and it is where political debate is really happening today. I get quite excited by this opportunity of bringing politics back to the people, which is probably not a good thing for a man of my age!” he laughs.

Carmina BuranaMark Forkgen conductor
Erica Eloff soprano Andrew Radley counter-tenor

Framed by the famous appeal to Destiny - ‘O Fortuna’, the work’s exuberance and sensuality, simple melodies and driving rhythms have ensured its lasting popularity. The concert will begin with a sequence of choral music from the last 50 years by British and American composers.

The group’s chorus of powerful harmonies emote the struggles and passion of South Africa. They sing a cappella isicathamiya and mbube music – loud, powerful choruses contrast with softer, almost whispering chants where voices blend harmoniously, combined with tightly-choreographed dance moves that keep the singers on their toes. Netsayi is one of the UK’s most original talents with a live reputation to match who mixes her Zimbabwean roots with pop and folk to tell moving tales of an independent African.

This autumn, Lorraine McIntosh and Ricky Ross from the multi-million selling Scottish group Deacon Blue, take their new album ‘Great Lakes’ on the road with an all-star band, under the name McIntosh Ross.
After more than two decades in and out of Deacon Blue, Lorraine has launched a career as an actress while Ricky has been working as a songwriter for artists including James Blunt and Jamie Cullum. However, writing, recording and performing their own music remains central and the pair wanted to make an album together of beautiful, meaningful and simple songs that they could call their own.
The result is ‘Great Lakes’, which combines echoes of the duo’s Celtic homeland with the country twang of the American south. Combined with some Deacon Blue favourites, this is a real treat for music lovers.
