restaurants and extensive leisure facilities.
The hotel is a six storey building a four
storey bedroom block over a two storey
plinth containing all public function areas.
There are three bedroom wings, which are
arranged in a pin-wheel configuration of
finger blocks coming off the central atrium
and stair/lift core. All circulation to and
from bedrooms travels through the atrium
with its panoramic views over the Meath
countryside.
Some hotels have become destinations in
their own right theyre the icons of hoteldesign and are one-off experiences. Once
youve experienced it and ticked the box,
you wont necessarily return.
However, the vast majority of hotels rely on
repeat business. Todays guest will choose
a hotel almost entirely on the basis of the
experience it offers and the way the hotel
reflects the guests lifestyle. So its critical
that your designers get it right.
But how do you define that experience? How do you know what your guest wants?
We all know the guests basic needs
comfort, reliability, good service. Most
hotels should at least offer all that. But in
an increasingly diversified marketplace
driven by what we term the experience
economy, people travel further and in
search of more. Adventure, tranquillity,
family-friendly places, business oriented
environments, design-led or culturally
responsive - guest profiles and demands
vary dramatically. As designers, where do
we start?
At HKR we dont design places to suit

customisable can also be bland. We
interrogate the brief and work very hard
at understanding the guest profile and the
market. Then we work closely with the
design and project teams and creatively
tailor the design to deliver the right product
one that is
innovative
experience driven
appropriate for its context
At HKR we believe, from a guests
perspective, these are areas where design
can make a real difference.

components for the interactive and smart control of building or service parts.
Low-tech innovation workshop The workshop deals with the expressivepotential of low- tech solutions with high bioclimatic performances. The workshopwill examine building techniques employing the principles of the vernaculararchitecture and non-conventional materials, such as disused tires, plasticbottles, raw earth, straw etc.
