GMC Foundation Opens New Frontiershe Georgia Military College Foundation is positioned for anunprecedented campaign that promises to open new frontiersat the college. An integrated plan that is already deliveringexceptional results is underway.

The GMC Foundation has a multitude of ambitious initiativesthat are certain to change the landscape of Georgia Military Collegeby 2010. In partnership with the college's senior leadership and theGMC Board of Trustees, the Foundation has set its sights on anunprecedented $10 million endowment that will enable us to bettersecure the future of the institution. Also by 2010, a new $21 millionprep school, a state-of-the-art learning facility that represents thenext step in implementing the college's Campus Master Plan, willprovide the classroom space needed to achieve the strategic goals ofGeorgia Military Prep School.

The Foundation has sustained total giving exceeding the level of$1 million in consecutive years since 2004, and a new capitalcampaign, "GMC's Promise," is already quietly progressing with alead gift of $1 million already committed. Alumni and friends havealready pledged an additional $227,500 toward sponsorship of areaswithin the new prep school facility.

For 2008, our focus will continue to be on generating revenue for immediate needs through unrestricted gifts, while ensuringrepeatable excellence in our quest to grow the endowment to $10million by 2010.

We have seen exciting results in current initiatives such as theSteinway Society, where the generosity of donors has providedoutstanding choral and orchestral concerts. Engraved barracks paversand brass plaques on auditorium seats commemorate the gifts of somany who have lent their support. The 1879 Circle of Friends'annual membership is increasing, as more and more alumni andfriends become committed to assisting deserving students throughthe Alumni Scholarship Fund.

Our ambitious plans for progress will become reality through thecommitment of those who believe in Georgia Military College andare willing to invest in its future. We covet your involvement andyour support in days to come, and we offer our sincere thanks tothose whose generosity already has made a profound difference.

Horrified as we were, we could onlyimagine what his family was goingthrough; however, Mr. Robert Stokely,Mike's dad, has shared more than oncethat it was in those first awful hours, heand his wife sitting on the porchgathering themselves for what hadcome and was yet to come, that theidea came to them to establish thisscholarship in Mike's memory. "Weknew it would have to start small, maybe just for books at first, butsomething to help someone who justneeds that little bit more to get there."

In just over a year, out of that seedof an idea sparked by loss and pain andnurtured full grown by the amazingspirit of Mike's dad, has come a fullyendowed scholarship. The checkpresentation ceremony was held at thestudio of WSB Radio in Atlanta justbefore Veteran's Day last November. The funds were raised at the MikeStokely Foundation, Inc. First Annual"Ride to Remember," organized by Unit57 American Legion Riders, Newnan,Georgia. It was most fitting to have

Chris Krok, talk show host, and theWSB crew in on this since they wereinstrumental in helping raise themoney, especially when the StokelyFoundation's efforts had come so nearthe $25,000 endowment mark and inone hour, raised $2,000 through Krok'sbroadcast during the 10:00 p.m. houron September 24, 2007. This radioeffort gained nationwide support frompeople who never knew Mike or heardof GMC.

Robert Stokely is an eloquent man,and that is demonstrated by hisexplanation of his mission. "MikeStokely loved Milledgeville and wasproud to attend Georgia Military theone year he completed. He waspreparing to return when the winds ofwar called him to duty. While Mike didnot get to return home and graduatefrom GMC, his sacrifice in Iraq hasnow led to this scholarship, giving alittle help that will go a long way toensuring others do. In a symbolic way,at least in my mind, each time astudent marches across the stage to be

presented a diploma as they graduateGMC, so will Mike Stokely. I amproud to see this scholarship come tofruition and even prouder of the largearmy of volunteers and supporters whomade it happen. What a great way to‘Remember with Honor’ the serviceand sacrifice of SGT Michael JamesStokely, KIA 16 Aug 05 near YusufiyahIraq, US Army E Troop 108 CAV 48thBCT GAARNG."

While getting all this done in Mike'smemory, Mr. Stokely's mission hasexpanded. His Foundation now plansto establish scholarships around thestate in memory of the 25 other fallenmembers of Georgia's 48th Brigadefrom their tour in Iraq. Among this listof fallen soldiers is another cadet fromGMC, SGT Chad Michael Mercer. Infact, a local group who heard about thefund raising efforts for the MikeStokely Scholarship, and who hasalready made a check presentation as

well, agreed in a meeting withMr. Stokely, at his suggestion,to direct their fund raisingefforts toward a scholarship inmemory of Chad. On the basisof that agreement, their initialcheck will be used to initiate asecond scholarship here atGMC, and they have

committed to ongoing fund raising tohelp it grow to endowment level.

Mike's dad lost a part of his life thatis irreplaceable, but when approachedabout that, his comeback is that thisscholarship effort is his way ofpositively channeling his grief. He isalways, always positive about GMC andits influence and importance in Mike'slife. Here is what he wrote to GeneralBoylan following their meeting: "Iappreciate your service to our country, and the continuing sacrifice you make.As well, I appreciate your leadership atGMC, a fine institution where my 'boy,'Mike, was given a great educationaland social experience. I miss him sovery much, and have so much to bethankful for and proud of. He was mygood friend as well as my son. He hasgiven me a rich legacy of his past, including GMC, to carry me forward."

And now, Mr. Stokely and the MikeStokely Foundation have given GMC atremendous gift in return.

he summer of 2005 was hot, miserable and punctuated almost daily by news of violence, death, and more death in Iraq. On one of those most horrible of days that August, we learned of the death of one of our cadets, SGT Mike Stokely.

Dr. Robertson said, "Since the women's soccerprogram is relatively new, we wanted to provide themeans for purchasing the necessary equipment tomeet the needs of the program. Many of thesestudents are playing purely for the love of the game, with no scholarship opportunities, and I felt it was theright thing to do to help provide funding for them.I admire Kelly Zeilstra as a coach…she is a great leader of young women."

Kelly Zeilstra, GMC women's soccer coach, said,"GMC Junior College women's soccer has seen muchimprovement from last year; the team was only twowins short of qualifying for the playoffs." Zeilstranoted that, "From the kindness of his heart,Dr. Robertson has helpedtremendously with developing a strong foundation for ourwomen's soccer program."

As a result of the Robertsons'gifts of more than $30,000,an endowment for providingwomen's soccer scholarships, the John Stephen Concannon

Memorial Scholarship Fund, has been establishedthrough the Georgia Military College Foundation inmemory of Dr. Robertson's maternal grandfather.Funds earmarked for endowment as part of a Title IIIgrant awarded to GMC will provide a match for theRobertsons' generous gift, creating a perpetual fundthat will impact the soccer program for years to come.

The soccer field will be dedicated later this year in memory of Dr. Robertson's father, Jeffrey J.Robertson, III, whom Dr. Robertson considers the most influential man in his life.

I. STRENGTHENING THE CAMPUS ENVIRONMENT: SPONSORSHIP OF NAMING OPPORTUNITIES

Individuals who sponsor naming opportunities will assist in providing an attractive, modern facility which will be a place ofinspiration where students’ dreams are transformed into visions and their visions, into the reality of a successful, productivefuture. The support of those who believe in the importance of providing principled, moral education to our youth will make allof the difference in fulfilling this noble mission.

II. EXPANDING EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES: ESTABLISHMENT OF ENDOWMENTS

• Student Scholarships

Georgia Military College defines itself by its ability to provide students with the skills they need to succeed, all built on afoundation that emphasizes moral integrity, personal responsibility, and service to the community. Scholarships are often theonly means by which many of these future success stories can attain the high-quality education they deserve and that GeorgiaMilitary Prep School provides. The cost of attending should not hinder deserving young people from accomplishing their life’sgoal.

• Technology

Both students and faculty members in the twenty-first century depend on technology for research, communication, andclassroom work. Georgia Military Prep School must continuously upgrade its technology to keep pace with classroom demandsand student needs.

• Choral/Band Performance

Musical performance, among the highest and best avenues for revealing human emotion, provides an outlet for artistic expression and achievement. Instruction in music will be enhanced through endowments that help provide musical selectionsand meet other needs associated with creating an inspiring environment for learning.

• Faculty Development

The school is compelled by its mission to understand how students learn and to develop specialized learning strategies to helpthem succeed. Fortunately, GMC Prep’s size makes it possible to create a learning environment that addresses individual studentneeds. However, faculty must continue to address various learning styles and learn effective strategies for helping studentsovercome obstacles and learning difficulties. Learner-centered faculty development will ensure that GMC Prep students have thebest possible chance for success.

Endowments, established with a gift of at least $25,000, may be funded through outright gifts and/or pledges over a period of three to fiveyears or planned gift arrangements to include bequests, life insurance, trusts, and other types of deferred gift vehicles.

Such gifts to the GMC Foundation often yield considerable tax benefits to the donor. Individuals are encouraged to consult their personalfinancial advisors regarding these opportunities.

The holiday season once again was treated to an evening of celebration, and the spirit of giving and commitment toward preserving the essence ofduty, honor and country. Within the Old Capitol Building at GMC's maincampus in Milledgeville, the Legislative Chamber became a feast of finefood, music and conversation amidst sparkling tables of fine white linensand flowers, and chairs wrapped in red ribbon.

In attendance were members of the 2007 GMC President's Circle, OakLeaf Society and distinguished donors, and the event's hosts, MG PeterBoylan and his wife, Kathy. Guests dined on stuffed pork loin, chicken inwine sauce, sweet potato casserole with praline topping, scalloped potatoes, squash casserole, green beans almondine, apricot glazed carrots, cornpudding and a dessert buffet while enjoying the musical talent of GMCmusical director Moona Yu on the piano.

The President's Dinner has become an annual tradition, marking andcelebrating the steadfast and generous contributions of GMC supporterswith an affair to remember. As stated in MG Boylan's remarks:

"In today's world, in these United States, yes, too, even here in Milledgeville, the need forcitizens who not only understand, but, more, live the values of this institution is critical. Ourcountry, our civilization, our values are being challenged, even assaulted by elements in this worldwho aim at our destruction through diminution of our values. Thus the concepts ofduty, honor, country take on an added importance…but more to the point, there is acompelling need for people, for citizens, to carry out these values in their daily lives, tosupport the institutions that give life to those values. So I thank each of you here thisevening not only for your involvement with and support of this college, but, more, forwhat you do in your daily lives to advocate our values, and thereby through yourexample of good citizenship to proliferate these values upon which the very survival ofour country depends. Thank you,…citizens all…you make us proud to be a part of thisinstitution we call Georgia Military College.”__________________________________________________________________

Walter Troutman Remembers GMC for Helping Him

“Walter came fromnothing,” says Jack's wife,Charlotte. “Life was verydifficult when he and Jackwere young.” During histeenage years, Walter was atwit's end about his life andwhat to do with it-until hewas accepted at GeorgiaMilitary College.

“Walter talked to thedean,” Charlotte says, “andtold the dean that he wouldgive GMC everything hehad if they would let himin.”

That promise wasapparently effective, asWalter graduated from highschool at GMC in 1933 andjunior college in 1934. Afterserving in the U.S. Armyduring World War II,he began a successfulbusiness career as areal estate developer.

No matter howwealthy he became,or how much timehad passed, Walter

always remembered the roleGMC played in his success. Hemade annual gifts throughouthis life, and at his death in 2005,GMC received a bequest ofmore than $2.7 million.

“Walter was a good-heartedman with a knack for business,”Charlotte says. He heldproperties in a number of states, but perhaps his most notabledevelopment was the JockeyClub in Miami, a premierdestination of Hollywood stars, business tycoons, high-profileathletes and politicians duringthe 1970s and '80s.

“Walter always loved GMCand saw to it,” Charlotte says,“that GMC would get asignificant portion of his estate.”Half of the bequest will endow

academic scholarships, and the other half willendow footballscholarships.

“Walter always feltthat GMC gave him hischance,” Charlotte says.“He never forgot that.”

SUCCEED IN LIFEgrowing up was not easy for Walter C. Troutman. His father diedwhile he was in grade school, leaving his mother to raise Walterand younger brother Jack. It was hard under any circumstances fora woman alone to support a family in the 1920s; harder stillwhen the Depression arrived.

"Walter always loved GMC and saw to it that GMC would

get a significant portion ofhis estate." -Charlotte Troutman

The generosity of Mr. Troutman makes a profound impact

on our effort to build the endowment. More, his recognition

of the values of this college and its focus on character education

will provide a long lasting signpost on our continuing march

to greater excellence in all that we undertake.

—Peter J. Boylan, President Georgia Military College

Scholarships made available through the generosity of the Walter

Troutman Estate help provide a solid financial foundation from

which the recipients can launch their college careers. In addition,

these scholarships support Georgia Military College and the state

of Georgia in attracting and retaining high-achieving students.

— Dr. Mike Holmes, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty

Given the unique nature of Georgia Military College, attracting

endowment funds to provide for athletic scholarships is vitally

important to both the success of our programs and the fiscal

strength of our college. The Walter Troutman Athletic Scholarship

is a tremendous gift that will pay dividends to our junior college

athletes and our institution for many years to come.

Hosted by W.J. Usery (JC 1940), the event was a tribute toGMC, celebrating its past, present and future and the unwaveringleadership of its current president, MG Peter Boylan. It beganwith cocktails and hors d'oeuvres on the west lawn andcontinued in the Legislative Chamber, a formal flag presentationby the GMC Color Guard leading the way.

Inside the hallowed halls of history, the scent of roses andorchids and the delicate sounds of strolling violins provided adistinct backdrop for this special occasion, marked further by amoving solo by GMC Prep School Cadet Chay Aycock singing"God Bless America."

One hundred and forty honored guests attired in tuxedos andformal gowns dined amidst candlelight on beautifully adornedtables of Silver Bichon, Orleans Damask linen and Athens china. The atmosphere was majestic as history was in the making, amidst walls that had witnessed many an historic feat includingGeorgia's secession from the Union and orations by the Marquisde Lafayette and Alexis de Toqueville.

Continuing the Chamber'stradition of debate anddiscussion, the night providedtribute to the achievementsand progress of GMC, withpoignant remarks andreflection by some of itsgraduates: Usery, AsburyStembridge (HS 1948 / JC1951), Dr. John Ferguson (HS1961 / JC 1963), and Liz

Jarvis Fabian (HS 1978)."As a 1940 graduate, I am grateful for

the many ways in which my life has beenshaped by my experiences at GeorgiaMilitary College. The knowledge, discipline, structure and integrity Iabsorbed while a cadet had a profoundinfluence," noted Usery, former U.S.Secretary of Labor under President Gerald Ford and holder of fivepresidential appointments. "GMC, with its storied history andproud traditions, is certainly worthy of such an honor."

Liz Jarvis Fabian further emphasized this belief. "GMC wasthe introduction to my life. It was my family. I was not the NewYorker with the funny accent. I was part of something bigger."

"I see the legacy in the cadets of today: their courtesy, theirintellect," added Dr. Ferguson.

The focus on intellect as well as character building has beenthe premise of this institution since its founding in 1879.Under the unwavering leadership of MG Boylan itcontinues today. As noted by Powell A. Moore (HS 1955),representative of the U.S. Secretary of Department ofDefense, OSCE Representative, "the long and distinguishedhistory of the school has been especially enriched over thepast decade and a half under the leadership of MG Boylan. He has led a remarkable transformation of GMC that hasbeen reflective of his personal commitment to theprinciples of duty, honor and country."

GMC's timeline of achievements is an excellentdemonstration of MG Boylan's influence with nearly 50percent of the major accomplishments of the school takingplace during his tenure.

institution that placed great value on the virtues thatare identified with West Point….a place that shapedmy life," explains MG Boylan. "While the physicalaspects of the institution were in gross disrepair, nonethe less the aspects that defined GMC were things thatI held dear. So, GMC became a passion. Over time,as the financial strength increased, more and moreeffort was able to be devoted to remedying thephysical plant, but also, and more importantly, toelevate what we were doing to develop the characterof our students. Today, while we remain steadfast inour aims, none the less, we continue to raise oursights."

GMC Appreciation Day was officially decreed in aProclamation by Milledgeville Mayor Richard Bentley.According to Usery, September 29, 2007 was also acelebration of the people of Milledgeville, past andpresent, who have steadfastly supported GMC evenduring its most challenging of times. One such person isMrs. Beegee Baugh, wife of Dr. James E. Baugh (HS 1937/JC1939). Known as the "First Lady of Milledgeville," she hasparticipated and led numerous endeavors on behalf of GMC,always with a constant desire to enrich the lives of others throughher time and personal resources.

MG Boylan's wife, Kathy, was also recognized." She is a gift tothe people who know and love her, and a gift to the communityshe supports and contributes to. GMC is fortunate to have her onits team," stated Usery.

GMC President MG Peter Boylan was

honored for his extraordinary leadership

that ensured the survival of GMC and its

ongoing path of excellence and positive

influence on the lives of its students

and society.

"At this moment, a lot of mental

baggage that I continue to carry from a

lifetime ago comes to mind. It had been a

difficult and vicious battle that lasted for

perhaps two hours against an enemy that

was only yards away. Several of my men

died in that fight...Lindsley, Smitty, and

Red-the gangly kid from Arkansas. I

remember them all. I was presented with

a medal for actions in combat, but while I

did my duty, it was their efforts that

carried the day. So it is with Georgia

Military College. Those many who

preceded me, whose efforts to keep this

institution alive in its darkest hours, are

the real heroes. I have those many to

thank for giving me an opportunity to

create what they believed in. I must tell

you that it is much easier to have a vision

of the future when you are standing on the

shoulders of others. I am grateful for

having been given the opportunity to

create a vision, but more, for the efforts of

you here and those whose support over

the years have made it possible. As many

of you have heard me observe before: they

pin medals on the leaders; but, in reality, it

is the platoons, companies, and battalions

that win the battles. We have fought a

long war and I am indebted to you,

soldiers all, for your willingness to fight

when hope seemed forlorn and to believe

when truth suggested otherwise. Finally,

thank you for believing in me."

Hecommended GMC for promoting the qualitiesof good citizenship, character and integrity.

As stated by MG Boylan in his remarksthat evening…

"I have those many to thank for giving mean opportunity to create what they believedin. GMC SERVICE AWARDCarolyn Taylor ThomasMilledgeville, Georgia

Carolyn Taylor Thomas was born in Milledgeville, but the familylater relocated to Atlanta. She is a graduate of Spellman College andthe Clark Atlanta University School of Social Work and took post-graduate courses at Case Western Reserve University School of SocialWork as well as American Sign Language at Cleveland StateUniversity. She is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.,Epsilon Omega Chapter.

Her employment began in Cleveland, Ohio in social services andcontinued there with several organizations until she retired in 1986 asa Licensed Social Worker in Ohio and returned to Milledgeville;however, retiring from that professional life did not retire herdedication to the Milledgeville community. Thomas is a member ofthe Boys & Girls Club, Allied Arts, Old Capitol Kiwanis Club, andCourt Appointed Special Advocacy group (CASA). She has a lifemembership in NAACP (Secretary) and SCLC; was a charter memberof Georgia's Antebellum Capital Museum, now Georgia's Old CapitalMuseum; and Learning In Retirement, GCSU. She also holdsmembership in the Sallie Ellis Davis Club of Federation of ColoredWomen's Clubs of Georgia and AARP State Legislative Committee. Her organizational affiliations continue in the areas of care forhandicapped and the elderly, parenting and partnering programs, andpredatory lending.

Thomas was elected to the GMC Board of Trustees in 1989 and isthe first African-American female member, now serving in her fifthterm. She was voted Secretary of the Board by the members of theBoard and was named to the Junior College Committee by theChairman of the Board during her first term.

When Thomas accepts responsibility, she takes it seriously andserves loyally. For at least the last ten junior college annual facultyassemblies, Thomas has graced us with poise, intelligence and a greatsense of humor. When the faculty members are all assembledtogether, it is not uncommon to see this tiny-framed, silver-hairedlady mingling with the group and discussing various topics ofinterest. It is her preference to be seated among the faculty memberswhere she engages in conversations and actively participates in thefaculty division break-out groups. She has a genuine interest in thecollege curriculum and knows that the faculty members are thementors and educators of the next generation of leaders. For thisreason, Thomas is passionate about ensuring that GMC's faculty arequalified and that they have opportunities to continue their ownprofessional development in their areas of expertise. She truly enjoysthe diverse and talented group of faculty and staff, never hesitating toask a question or offer a comment on any subject.

You might ask, "What keeps her going?" As SuperintendentTeacher of the Sunday School and Stewardess of her Church, Lee'sChapter C.M.E., she would respond that in all her ways sheacknowledges Him and He does direct her path.

HONORARY ALUMNAInez L. HawkinsMilledgeville, Georgia

The Honorary Alumni Award is bestowed upon individuals whoare not alumni of Georgia Military College, but who have renderedspecial or exceptional service to the school or to its AlumniAssociation, and who, by virtue of their service, are worthy of thedesignation of GMC Alumnus and all that the designation entails.

Ms. Inez Hawkins' association with and great admiration forGeorgia Military College began at a very early age while attendingGMC Grammar School, "Little GMC." She relates her memory of thepresident of the school, Colonel Jenkins, addressing all the youngstudents there so they felt as if they, too, were a part of the "BigGMC." After completing the seventh grade, Ms. Hawkins would haveloved to have attended GMC, but girls weren't admitted then, soinstead she attended Peabody High School, which was a girls' schoolon the campus of GSCW (now GCSU). Hawkins subsequentlyreceived her undergraduate degree from GSCW and her Master ofEducation degree from Georgia College. The Education Specialist(Ed.S.) was granted by Augusta State University.

Before coming to work at GMC, Hawkins was a bacteriologistwith what was then the Georgia Department of Public Health. Afterthe birth of her son, Stan, she was a stay-at-home Mom until hestarted to school, after which she began teaching at GMC in 1966 as apart-time high school biology instructor. Hawkins relates it was somuch fun that she almost felt guilty getting paid...and that was agood thing, too, because the pay wasn't very much at that time! Later, she taught full time, moving from the high school division to thecollege division, serving as the Science Department Chair. It was inthat capacity that she wrote a proposal seeking equipment for thehigh school and college science labs, which was in turn funded by thePost Secondary Education Commission. Later, while serving asGrants Coordinator and Director of Development, she wrote moreproposals that were also funded. In 1976, Hawkins was named VicePresident for Development (most likely the first woman to hold anadministrative role). In this capacity, her collaboration with locallegislators Wilbur Baugh, Bobby Parham and Culver Kidd, as well asstate legislators and state executives, led to securing the first funding,$90,000, from the State of Georgia. She relates everyone felt as if itwas $90 million because it was sorely needed and has made atremendous difference to the school over the years. In her role asGMC's Vice President for Development, she was invited to participatein The American Council on Education's National IdentificationProgram (ACE/NIP), a mentoring program which identified womenin executive positions in post-secondary institutions.

Fermor was born January 14, 1919 in Milledgeville, to parentsMarie Moran Hargrove and Fermor Hargrove, Sr., both of whomgraduated from GMC. Fermor himself attended GMC grammarschool, high school, and junior college. After graduation, he went towork at Lawrence Flower Shop. In 1941 he married Mattie BeallButts, and over the years they had three children, one of whom, Wally, also graduated from GMC. Fermor now has four grandchildren andseven great grandchildren.

Fermor served in the US Army from 1942 until 1944 when he wasdischarged with the rank of 1LT. He then entered the U.S. PostalService in Milledgeville where he worked for 35 years. Once"officially" retired, Fermor became very active in the community, serving for 14 years as a volunteer with the Milledgeville Conventionand Visitors Bureau as a trolley driver and tour guide. During thistime he also provided a personal shuttle service to and from theAtlanta Airport - at no charge. In 1970 hewas elected to the board of Masonic Hall Trustees and is still servingas well as being elected secretary/treasurer in 1984 and serving in thatcapacity until 2006. Fermor's efforts have always been directed towardmaintaining and preserving the historic Masonic Building. His othercommitments are to his church, First United Methodist, and to the Mealson Wheels program, with which he has been involved for about 12 years.

Through all his involvement in this community, Fermor hasalways remained loyal to and supportive of GMC, not only for whathe learned there but also for all that is now provided to thecommunity by GMC. His philosophy, to be shared with everyone,"Wherever you go, whatever you do, may you have a safe trip - andsomewhere along the way, find something to laugh about every day!"

(—Continued from page 41) Honorary alumna, Inez L. Hawkins

During her tenure, she also had the great experience of being anInstitutional Representative on several occasions for GMC atAdvanced ROTC Camp at Fort Bragg, where she rappelled off a 50foot tower, drove a Sheraton tank, fired the cannon on a tank, firedmachine guns, went down the Slide for Life, and tried all kinds ofother "neat stuff." According to Hawkins, the rappelling was a snapbecause some of her students had already taught her how back oncampus! At the closing dinner, the Institutional Reps who were crazyenough to attempt the feats our cadets did on a daily basis at campwere awarded the coveted Recondo Badge...one of her great treasures.

GMC made Hawkins an Honorary General and presented her withan engraved saber when she left in 1984 to work as a consultant withRegional Educational Service Agencies, actually serving as its presidentfor two years; with the Georgia Department of Education; and as aprivate educational consultant. Some of the work she has mostenjoyed is the collaborative work with state and federal agencies todevelop a curriculum for outdoor and environmental education forteachers. As background for this work, she has relied on herexperience while at GMC where she frequently used the out-of-doors as a classroom, believing that is where students really learnabout the world.

Hawkins states, "One never really leaves GMC. It touches theheart in a way no other school does. It inspires us all as it educatesyoung men and women and develops strong character. To be a partof Georgia Military College and of the lives of my students hasbeen such a blessing. My love and admiration for GMC continueas I have the privilege of serving on the board of the GeorgiaMilitary College Foundation."

In recognition of his service to GMC, Dr. John "Jack"Anderson was awarded the position of Vice President forAcademic Affairs and Deanof Faculties Emeritus duringthe Alumni WeekendAwards Brunch this pastOctober. From 1997 untilhis retirement in 2007, Dr.Anderson served as the VicePresident for AcademicAffairs and Dean ofFaculties at Georgia MilitaryCollege. In this position, hewas responsible for theacademic programming ofGeorgia Military Collegeoffered at six locations inGeorgia and serving over5,000 undergraduatestudents. Dr. Anderson wasalso responsible for providing guidance and direction in allacademic affairs matters to the President of GeorgiaMilitary College and to five Distant Learning CenterDirectors and their Assistant Academic Deans.

Prior to his time at GMC, Dr. Anderson's academiccareer included serving as the Vice President for Academic

Affairs and as a memberof the President's Cabinetat Spartanburg MethodistCollege in Spartanburg,South Carolina. Beforethat assignment he servedas an Assistant Professor,Associate Professor andDepartment Chair andthen as a full Professorand Division Chair ofPolitical Science atLaGrange College inLaGrange, Georgia.

Dr. Anderson is also aColonel, United States AirForce Reserve (retired)with military experience

in the National Guard and Air Force Reserve Service, following his active duty assignments from 1964 until 1970in the United States Air Force.

This past year a new Alumni Association fundraisingendeavor débuted. In partnership with the BaldwinCounty Sheriff 's Department, the Association nowsponsors the Will Robinson Memorial Road Race.

The Race was actually started in 1995 by Richie Blevins(JC 1995), a DARE officer in the Baldwin County schoolsystem, and was called a "Nope2Dope Run.” The next yearafter Deputy Will Robinson (HS 1987) was killed in theline of duty, it was renamed the Will Robinson MemorialRoad Race. At that time, Blevins enlisted help through theMilledgeville Junior Woman's Club (MJWC), and they andthe Sheriff 's Department became sponsoring partners. Therace eventually became MJWC's main fundraiser with themoney going to community projects, DARE, G.R.E.A.T.,and the Will Robinson Scholarship at GMC.

This past year in June the Milledgeville Junior Woman'sClub disbanded leaving the Sheriff 's Department and therace without a sponsoring partner. Suzanne Martin Ratliff(HS 1989) and Secretary of the Alumni Association Boardof Directors, as well as a former member of the MJWC, hadassisted with this race for almost all of the 12 years of itsexistence and did not want to see the race not go on.Suzanne approached the Alumni Executive Board about theGMC Alumni Association becoming a sponsoring partnerand offered compelling reasons. "This is an event toremember someone from our community who lost his lifeserving that community; it is in memory of an alumnus ofGMC; it is an event that gives back to the community; and

it is a family event for all ages in which anyone canparticipate."

GMC had already been a strong supporter of the racethrough the school's participation, winning the spirittrophy over the last few years for the most studentsregistered, so it seemed a natural, transitional step to theAlumni Executive Board that the Association become asponsoring partner. With the deciding vote cast this pastJuly, a new tradition was born.

Tradition became reality with this year's race. LocalBoard members worked behind the scenes to prepare forrace day and then were on hand to help with all that ittakes to make an event "happen.” A portion of the pressrelease tells the story: Georgia Military College received the2007 Will Robinson Race School Spirit Award during theroad race held Saturday, November 17, 2007. GMCRunning and Cross Country Coach Stacie Goggans said,"GMC cadets, siblings, teachers and parents, ranging fromGMC middle school through GMC junior college, participated in the race this year and this marks the seventh consecutive year that GMC has won the SchoolSpirit Award."

And "the rest of the story" is that as a sponsoringpartner, the Alumni Association will receive 50% of themoney raised, and those dollars will be added to thescholarship fund of the 1879 Circle of Friends. TheSheriff 's department will make their donation to the Will Robinson Scholarship from their funds as usual.

These words highlight the values thatare so very important to the mission ofGMC. Character education has alwaysbeen an integral part of the GMCexperience. To help reinforce the truemeaning of the words that the cadetsshout every morning, GMC hascontinued to expand its day-to-daycharacter education program. Inaddition to the Word of the Weekprogram, the school now has a theme ofthe month that ties the words Duty,Honor and County to the Words of theWeek. To highlight the theme of themonth, the Prep School undertakesprojects designed and implementedjointly by the faculty and students.September's theme was HONOR. Insupport of this theme, the Prep Schoolhonor council visited each classroomand reminded students of theimportance of the cadet honor code toeach of them as individuals, to the school, and to the community. Each cadet was then asked to write the honor code out in his ownhandwriting and to sign his name indicating his commitment touphold it in everything he does. The faculty took these signed cardsand mounted them in a Wall of Honor display that could be seen ona daily basis by all cadets. These new projects have already had atremendous effect on students as is evident by the following incidentthat took place in my geometry classroom several weeks ago.Although I am very proud of the individuals who were involved inthis incident, the names of the cadets have been changed so as to notembarrass any of my students.

As I was teaching a lesson one day, I noticed a cadet in the back ofthe room busily "searching" for something in her purse. When heractions did not subside, I realized that she was probably "texting"someone on her cell phone. It is school policy that cell phones areturned off before students come into a classroom, and I have anadditional publicized policy that any cadet caught using a cell phonein class will have his phone taken away and be assigned two hours ofbullring. At that point, I commented to the cadet that surely she wasnot texting in my class. She responded "Yes, ma'am." I then askedher to bring the phone up to me, in front of the class, and remindedher of the consequences. As Cadet Katie was walking towards me,Cadet Dean said to her, "Why didn't you lie? She would have neverknown." Before Cadet Katie or I could respond, another student,Cadet Robert, quickly responded by saying that Cadet Katie had totell the truth; it was part of the GMC code and especially since they

had all just written out the honor code andsigned their names to it. Other studentsstarted chiming in as well affirming CadetRobert's response. Cadet Billy noted that oursignatures were displayed for all to see andthat it would have been a mockery of theexercise they had just done two weeks ago ofwriting out the code and signing their namesto uphold it. I allowed the cadets to continuetalking and was just amazed at some of thethings that were being said. Amazed in a goodway, I should say. Ideas such as everyoneknew we had an honor code, but now that wehad written it out and signed our names to it,we would be breaking a legal contract if wedid anything against the code so we could getin bigger trouble. It was fun to let the cadetstalk for a couple of minutes sharing theirideas on the situation. Interestingly enough,no student came out with negative commentsabout the Honor Code Wall display. Whenthe conversation died down, I took the

opportunity to revisit the issue of why living honorably is importantin every facet of life, not just as students. I shared with thempersonal stories of situations that I encountered in my first careerworking as a mathematician and analyst. I saw many a good man orwoman's career or reputation ruined over someone being less thanhonest or acting unethically in the workplace. We also talked aboutsome of the hurt to others when someone seemingly got away with alie. We talked about trust and letting someone down and how itmakes people feel. There were some snickers and laughs as certaintopics came up, but in the end, it was probably one of the bestlessons of the week - for all of us! I have a newfound respect for mystudents and realized that the little things that we do as part of theCharacter Education program have a much bigger impact than wethink. At the end of the day, Cadet Katie came to retrieve her cellphone from me. She had tears in her eyes and was apologizing forwhat she had done. She assured me it would never happen again. We talked about the events of the day and I thanked her for herhonesty in the situation. I decided to waive the two hours ofbullring because I truly believed that both Cadet Katie and everyother cadet in the class got much more out of the five minutediscussion that ensued than any other consequence or punishmentthat could have given.

The 2007 GMC Junior College Bulldogsconcluded their regular season on Saturday,November 10, at historic Davenport fieldwith a convincing 35-13 victory over theLackawanna College Falcons. With theBulldog's victory, they continued theirwinning streak of eight consecutive victories.Their final regular season record of 9-1landed them in the National Junior CollegeAthletic Association's Football poll as the #4ranked team in America. Because of theirstrong finish and national ranking, theBulldogs went bowling on December 8, inMt. Pleasant, Texas, at the Pilgrim's PrideBowl Classic. The Bulldogs played NavarroCollege out of Corsicana, TX, in front of anationally televised audience on FOX SportsSouthwest. The Pilgrim's Pride BowlClassis was the only Junior Collegefootball game of its kind that wastelevised. The Bulldogs came up short, but definitely represented GeorgiaMilitary College to the fullest on nationaltelevision. They finished the 2007 seasonwith a 9-2 record, and the #9 ranked teamin the country.

On September 8, the Bulldogs lost aheart breaker to Trinity ValleyCommunity College in double overtime. However, the Bulldogs recouped andshowed that they were a team thatpossessed a tremendous amount ofcharacter, pride, and desire, as they wenton an eight game winning streak. Duringthat win streak, the Bulldog Offenseaveraged a whopping 40 points a game, andhad two contests against Troy University J.V.and Valdosta State J.V., in which they scored52 points in each contest. The BulldogsDefense shined as well, as they posted fourshutouts and only gave up an average of 8.5points per game.

The Bulldog Offense was guided this yearby employing a two quarter back system thatenabled both young men to attack defensesby using their strengths. Freshman JoeiFiegler and Sophomore Carlton Fearsprovided the Bulldogs with a rushing andpassing attack. Fiegler used his passingabilities to amass nearly a 1,000 yardsthough the air. Fiegler completed 63 percentof his passes and only threw 4 interceptionson the year. Fears used his legs that keptdefenses off guard when he wasquarterbacking the offense. Fears accounted

for 700 yards of offense this year, anddefinitely made defenses have to account forhim because of his running abilities. Therunning game for the Bulldogs also provedeffective throughout the year as well. GMCwas fortunate to have a stable of runningbacks that allowed the offense to amass 2,168yards rushing on the ground this year.Freshman, James Poe, led the way with 505yards rushing and 9 touchdowns.Sophomore, Jarell Crawford, accounted for453 yards rushing and 8 touchdowns.Freshman, Fernando Pitts, also had 379yards respectively with 4 touchdowns. TheBulldog Offense also had 1,541 yardsreceiving through the air. Freshman, ChalebRavenell, caught 7 touchdown passes and

had 345 yards receiving. Sophomore,Emanuel Drake, hauled in 16 passes for 260yards, one touchdown, and providedleadership for a rather young receiving corp.Lastly, Sophomore, All-American, Tight End,Patrick Wilkinson, had another solid year forthe Bulldogs as he battled his way throughinjuries all season and ended the year with220 yards receiving.

The Bulldogs Defense, which employs the3-5-3 Defensive scheme, had anotherimpressive year against their opponents. Thedefense only allowed 11.2 points per game, and held four of their opponents to ascoreless ending. The rush defense endedthe season by allowing a mere 345 yardsrushing the entire year, and that total shouldput them as the number one or two team inthe country in rush defense. The defensewas also stout against the pass by giving uponly 156 yards per game. As a result, theBulldog defense should once again be ranked

as one of the top five defenses in thecountry. Turnovers have always been astaple of the Bulldog defense, and this yearwas no difference. The defense created 35 ofthem. There were 16 fumble recoveries and19 interceptions. The defense was led thisyear by a host of individuals who hadsuperlative performances. Freshmandefensive back, Rashad McRae, led the teamin tackles with 57, had one fumble recoveryand two interceptions, and tied for secondon the team with 6 sacks. Sophomoredefensive linemen, Malcolm Bennett, JoshBeard, Markeith Wylie, and Leroy Burgess allprovided a formidable defensive front thatmade it extremely difficult for offenses topenetrate. They were all instrumental in the

defense's 105 tackle for losses and 56sacks. Between the four of them theyhad 32.5 tackle for losses and 20.5 sacks.Markeith Wylie led the defense with 10sacks on the year. Sophomorelinebackers, Tony Murray, 41 tackles, and Jeff Banks, 31 tackles, were secondand fourth on the team in tacklesrespectively. Linebacker, TonyStraughter, had a fine freshman outingposting 29.5 tackles on the year. In thesecondary, Sophomore defensive backsBrian Holder and Donsay Hardemanprovided sound leadership. Hardemanhad three interceptions and returnedone of them for a touchdown, and

Holder had two. Freshman, defensive backTaikwon Paige, had a nice first collegiate yearand led the team with five interceptions.

The 2007 season was once again asuccessful one for the Bulldogs. Head CoachBert Williams and his staff continually setand maintain high standards for their youngmen to follow. These individuals, who stuckit out through many trials and tribulations, morning conditioning sessions, and anextremely tough summer work out programand pre-season camp, were rewarded byplaying in the 2007 Pilgrim's Pride BowlClassic in Mt. Pleasant, TX. Because of thehard work of the players, the GMC FootballProgram has established itself as a leader injunior college football through its characterand discipline.
