CAD packages are used by scientists, engineers and designers to design cars, roads, bridges, waterways, circuit boards, dams, computers, oil rigs and buildings.

The software needed is often complex and requires powerful computers to run it.

Computer Aided Design packages have many special features including:

Adding Measurements (Dimensions) to the drawing.

Allowing the designer to draw an object in two- dimensions and then having the software to build and display a three-dimensional solid version of the design.

Allowing the object being designed to be rotated and viewed from different angles.

Page 2: CAD packages are used by scientists, engineers and designers to design cars, roads, bridges, waterways, circuit boards, dams, computers, oil rigs and buildings

Powerful processors and large quantities of RAM

Graphics tablets are often used to construct and trace images.

Where a hard copy of the drawing is required plotters are often used.

CAD requires

Monitors having high resolutions

i.e. 1024 to 4096 pixels across

Computer Assisted Learning (CAL)Computers, and particularly multi-media systems can be used for education and training. Many software packages come with 'Tutorial' sessions, which allow the user to learn by following simple instructions on the computer. Questions might be asked and the session continues only if the user enters the correct answer.Laserdisc technology is being used for interactive video simulations. E.g.. highway code, fire officer training.

Authoring software allows users to create multi-media presentations.Virtual Reality systems are being developed where the user puts on a helmet which projects images into the eyes using small computer screens. Although great for computer games, there are serious uses as well. VR systems are being developed to help student surgeons; a CAT (Computer Aided Tomography) scan can create a 3-dimensional picture of the human body. A surgeon can put on a VR helmet and feel as if he is walking around inside the patient! He can view e.g. a tumor from different angles etc..

Delivering Coursework via the Web

There is individual tuition using a wide range methods, media and feedback

Students can go over the material again and again in their own time including repeating test material to improve their score. Due to the different media used it helps motivate students and keep their interest.

It generally improves student performance

Sometimes the teacher may have difficulty getting students to pay attention in class because they will not stop using the software when asked.

The teacher and student may not communicate problems to one another quite so often

Students may not discuss topics in class so often and this may reduce social interaction and valuable group discussions.

CAL can be expensive although due to competition from software writers, titles are becoming cheaper.

Computers are now commonplace in the health industry.

Patient Monitoring:

Hospital patients who have had operations, or for some other reason need to be closely monitored, require a great deal of attention from hospital staff such as nurses.

When someone is in a critical condition and is put into intensive care, his or her heart rate, breathing rate and blood pressure must be measured at frequent intervals.

Computer based patients’ monitors are now commonly used to collect the required information and present it visually on a digital display or produce it as paper output.

Microscopes are commonly built into patient monitoring devices as integral parts of the machines and as such are examples of embedded system

Page 9: CAD packages are used by scientists, engineers and designers to design cars, roads, bridges, waterways, circuit boards, dams, computers, oil rigs and buildings

X-ray machines in hospitals pass x-rays through the bodies of patients and onto the familiar transparent plastic films which record the intensity of the beams.X-rays are affected by such things as bones and internal organs so that their outlines and densities appear on the film ‘negative’.

Computers are used to help improve the quality of images produced by x-rays by capturing the x-ray data in digital form by applying special image enhancement techniques to sharpen edges of blurred images.

These techniques can aid doctors to see if there is anything wrong with the internal organs of patients

An embedded system is a large or small computer system that is built into a product, a piece of equipment or another computer system, and that performs some task useful to the product, equipment or system. It is a computer system that is programmed to perform a particular task. This task may be very simple or very complex; that is not a relevant distinction. "But" you say, " all computers are programmed to perform tasks!" True, however an embedded system is programmed to perform its task from the time it is powered up until it is shut down. Its programming cannot be changed except in ways that its original programmer intended.

This leads to the notion of an embedded system as a component. Just like a logic gate or other electronic component, an embedded system has a single task to

perform.

The electricity company has a large database (master file) of all its customers. The file will also include information such as latest meter readings, how much electricity the customer has used this year, how

much has been paid etc... At regular intervals, meter readers go round each house to read the electricity meter. The reading is recorded onto pre-printed forms.

The forms are all collected and input to the computer system. This may be done using OMR or OCR, or by manually keying in the data. The data must be validated before it is processed to make sure no 'silly' data is input.Keyed data will need to be verified to check for transcribing errors.

The electricity bill for each customer is calculated by the computer and printed. These bills will be posted to the customers

The customer then pays the bill by either sending a cheque or by credit/debit card. Some customers may pay by monthly standing orders or direct debits.

An example of a billing system is - electricity payments. Every

customer receives an electricity bill which must be paid.

Call Rating Day Part - At the highest level, you can graphically setup Call Rating Day Part - At the highest level, you can graphically setup how each of your day types is segmented. As you see, in this example, how each of your day types is segmented. As you see, in this example, we have selected Weekday. Within that weekday, we decide that hours we have selected Weekday. Within that weekday, we decide that hours are to be considered as Prime Time and which are Off Prime. This is a are to be considered as Prime Time and which are Off Prime. This is a global 'template' that is used as a starting point. Later on in the Rate global 'template' that is used as a starting point. Later on in the Rate Plans, these can be adjusted and customized. Plans, these can be adjusted and customized.

Setup the Year- Once you have created the Day Types that include how each day is segmented, you setup an entire year to show which days are holidays, weekends, etc. Don't worry, this is simple to do and we have included wizards to make it a fast task

SIMS (School Information Management System) is a Windows based school administration package, providing a computerised solution to school administration. It is an all in one system (integrated system), no separate modules for reports, subject & marks, finance and pupil information, developed in Microsoft Access & Visual Basic

FEATURES Administration System - Students Full students’ information can be kept - includes family, addresses, absentees, extramural activities etc. Student pictures can be added to their electronic files

1.

Link students to subjects and teachers

2.

Manipulate the marks you enter and work out averages per grade and class or per subject

3.

Calculate automatically whether a student has passed or failed and determine the total they obtained

4.

Manage outcome based education – Curriculum 2005

Page 16: CAD packages are used by scientists, engineers and designers to design cars, roads, bridges, waterways, circuit boards, dams, computers, oil rigs and buildings

5. Keep information of students’ whole school career e.g.. Subjects & marks from Year 7 to Year 13

6. Easy to use lookup and search facilities

7. Transfer your students at Year End automatically to the next year

8. Print standard reports eg. Class lists, mark sheets etc.

9. Add to your list of codes (e.g.. Postal codes, religion, subject sets/courses) as you work, without having to leave what your are doing and exiting out into another section of the program

10.

Choose to view certain selected groups with the use of Filters eg. Students according a certain age, students in a certain sports house etc.

11.

Save time when editing by using Quick Entry of Data – this allows you to capture bulk information about the students in column format
