needle arts through education and celebration of its heritage.”
PRESIDENT’S LETTER – Maura Robinson
Happy Monsoon! It finally started raining here in Tucson in mid-July and it is wonderful to
actually see the clouds roll off the mountains and the rain start in the evenings. I hope
your summer is going well and you are finding lots of time to stitch with a cold drink and
air conditioning. No matter where you are, the weather is always a reason to carve out
some extra stitching time!
It’s too hot . . . guess I have to stitch!
It’s raining . . . guess I have to stitch!
It’s too humid . . . guess I have to stitch!
The weather is perfect? Wait a minute, that’s also a great day to stitch!
REMEMBER the Tucson Chapter is celebrating the Monsoon Season with our very own
Monsoon Round! Sign up (through August 31) for one of two beautiful Catherine Jordan
designs (more information later in the newsletter) and the chapter will support $80 of the
cost. Thanks to Betsy for organizing this great educational opportunity. And THANK YOU
to all the chapter members who have helped with fundraising over the years. Because of
you we have this great educational opportunity! I have my project, now I just need to get
it done!
What did you do for your summer vacation? I am looking forward to seeing everyone’s
summer stitching finishes at the September meeting. It is also our Fall Pot Luck so there
will be lots of yummy food to share! Bring your favorite dish!
Enjoy summer where ever you are!

the chapter’s Treasurer, Betsy Smullen
before the end of the year, and the guild

PROGRAMS – Sandy DeBolt Kris Curtis At the program for our next regular meeting on September 5th, we look forward to membership participation in “What I did this Summer”. Please bring your projects and finishes to share with the group, along with your “Monsoon Round” progress. We will have a potluck luncheon , so be sure to bring a dish to share. YUM! With the holidays fast approaching, in October our program will be to stitch a lovely Crewel Wreath Ornament, designed for the EGA Stitch-a-Long on Facebook by Lucy Edmison. “Lucy stitched her wreath on linen twill with crewel wool threads — as is traditional in crewel embroidery. This is an easy and quick stitch project. This project is best worked in a hoop so the fabric is taut. You’ll need a chenille needle to pierce the fabric as you stitch. (Chenille needles have long eyes like tapestry needles and they have sharp points.).”
The Guild will provide the linen, wool threads in four colors, red beads, gold Kreinik ribbon, cardboard backing, red and
gold thread, batting, and fabric for backing.
You will need to bring
Chenille needle (size 22) 5” embroidery hoop Usual stitching supplies. We will have some extra needles and hoops for those that don’t have them with them. For those that have extra hoops please bring one to share.

COMING ATTRACTION!!!!!
Tucson Chapter of the Embroidery Guild of America
The Johnny Jewelry – Marcia DeCoster
February 8-9, 2020 9:30am- 4pm at TBD
The Johnny Jewelry was inspired by Marcia’s love of Johnny Was clothing with their colorful embroidery and
Bohemian style. While this isn’t a project class per se you can and will make whichever version of the Johnny
jewelry you’d like.
Per Marcia: “It all starts with a diamond which can be sized up or down depending on the number of units. It’s
built in such a way that all four of the corners (or three if you make a triangle) have the classic 4 beads of craw.
This gives you an opportunity to add a finial and provides lots of choice for finishing your edges. The top cube
of the pendant features a split cube bail which is an elegant solution to hanging your pendant. Given the
structure the edge shaping allows for different embellishment choices resulting in a lot of textural interest and
color complexity. The shape itself can also be made reversible by having one color on the front face and a
different on the back (You’ll want to be well practiced and CRAW confident for that choice!). With the use of
different center embellishments you get two pendants.
I’ve added Swarovski crystal, chain, Czech flowers, and spiky buttons to my corners. It would also be a great
place to depart into double craw. Double Craw is a new stitch developed by Sabine Lippert. We’ll delve into its
possibilities for making connections and all kinds of rope variations.
Class will begin with learning the diamond craw
shape at the heart of the collection. You’ll then
design the perfect piece of jewelry for you, using
the technique to combine the number and size of
diamonds you want. You might choose to go small
and add three in a row, or perhaps, a small, large
small in one pendant, or graduate the sizes. We’ll
be exploring connecting the diamonds in various
configurations including a bracelet should that be
your preference. We’ll also have illustrations which
include various edge and center embellishment
options. I hope that you’ll also have fun developing
a few of your own.
Two color ways will be offered as kits. One will be my favorite pale gold with aquas, greens and pinks and the
other will be the dramatic dark grey, corals and greens with a touch of silver. Chain will be sold separately. Kits
will provide a large assortment of seeds beads in coordinating colors and sizes with enough embellishment
options to give you choices and provide the ability to complete a large pendant or a smaller diamond bracelet.
Kits will need to be pre-ordered and will be $130. Marcia will provide a supply list and has no issue with you
supplying your own beads

The Tucson Chapter of the Embroiderers’ Guild of America
Tasmanian Screech Owl by Gary Clarke
December 3-4 2019 at the Mini Time Machine Museum
(9:30a – 4:00)
Cost of the Class: (includes kit fee of $70 ) $90 for Non members. The Tasmanian Screech Owl is an exercise in minimalism. Each
stitch in this design has a purpose. It is dark and sketchy to give
a fleeting look at the nocturnal creature. In the wild it can be
heard soon after nightfall, its blood-curdling screech letting you
know it is about. It is worked with one strand of 6-stranded
cotton on a stretched organza base. The colors are muted and
earthy, mimicking its habitat.
Gary was born and lives in Tasmania, Australia. He has written six
books on embroidery as well as taught and lectured on embroidery
in England, New Zealand, Canada, United States, and throughout
Australia.

PACIFIC SOUTHWEST REGION - Helen Salkowski
Plans are progressing for the next Regional meeting to be held here in Tucson on November 9, 2019, hosted by our
Tucson Chapter.
At the spring region meeting it was decided that the Jan Jellins pieces are to be sold on EBay. The sale will
start September 1. This should be enough time for all chapters to have a meeting and inform their members
of the sale of Jan Jellins creations. Please include this flyer in your newsletter.
I suggest that in order to find the listing members go into Ebay (and you can do that anytime between now
and September 1) and then into the advanced search for sellers. The PSR seller ID is jan8565. Save that ID in
your saved sellers list and you should be notified every time a new piece is listed. If this sale is to be
accomplished by June 1, 2020 there will need to be at least three pieces per month posted.
I will not be listing a shipping price with the expectation that our members will purchase the pieces with
delivery to be taken in person. i.e. local pickup only. An arrangement will be made for pickup/delivery.
While we can avoid a shipping cost there is nothing we can do about sales tax. Ebay calculates, collects and
pays the sales tax for us.
NOTE: The first piece will be posted September 1 but there may be a 1 day delay for it to appear in a search.
So don’t worry. It will be appear. If there are questions please email to address below.
Any questions can be emailed to [email protected]. I will get all inquiries.
Thank You, Linda Leone

Welcome to the August Stitch-a-Long! Books need
bookmarks and many EGA chapters have supported
Bookmarks for Literacy by supplying local schools
and libraries with stitched bookmarks to use with
their young readers. Leslie Gagliardi and I thought it
would be fun to expand on this idea by sponsoring a
contest to create new bookmark designs for EGA'ers
to stitch. We haven't quite figured out all the details
but it's important to note there will be PRIZES. We
have some beautiful Sajou scissors in need of good
homes. :-)
The general idea is we would like to encourage you to
make bookmarks for donations. Additionally, for any
aspiring designers out there, we would like to
encourage new ORIGINAL (that's important!)
designs that would be donated to EGA to create a
library of graphs that chapters could use as small
learning projects (Hardanger bookmark, anyone?) as
well as make great donations for readers.
To make all of this work, we need some help from
those of you have stitched bookmarks for Bookmarks
for Literacy or other similar venues. We're thinking
that most of them need to be more simple and graphic
to appeal to younger (ages 12 and under) readers, but
Comments from administrator Kate Gaunt
we really don't know. Anyone have a success story to
share?
In the meantime, I've posted a simple graph that I
created to get things started. It's in the files section of
this group. It spells out "R-E-A-D" in EGA's new
brand colors.
Some important notes....For the to-be-determined
contest, we WILL respect copyright. No copying, no
Pinterest stuff. No changing 10% of a chart and
calling it "original." That doesn't work. We want an
original, fresh from your very-own-head design. If
you would like a free-to-use font for stitching go to:
https://yarntree.com/freecharts/alphabets.pdf Yarntree
is a needlework wholesaler and the file is clearly
marked for free distribution.
So, help us make this a great contest and a great way
to promote EGA. The contest will be open to anyone
and the method of voting will be determined so we
expect that the contest will end at the end of
September. Those entering the contest with an
original project design will be asked to sign a brief
statement attesting to its originality and allowing
EGA to distribute it.
Thanks for your help with fine-tuning this idea. Let's
make BOOKMARKS!
