Canada Down Under is a YouTube channel featuring great connections between Canada and Australia presented by the Consulate General of Canada in Sydney.

The channel has two new videos—the first looking into the Australia Petroleum Production and Exploration Association Exhibition and Conference 2013 (APPEA), and the second is an interview with Pierre Elias, the Asia Pacific Business Development Manager of Boréalis.

Welcome to the Canadian Australian Chamber of Commerce

newsletter. It’s been an interesting few months since our last

edition.

We have held many successful events, of which you can read about

in this edition. We have more to come so I urge you to take a look at

our website for more information. In this edition you will see we are

also featuring future cultural events that should not be missed.

Membership provides a business networking forum and community

that introduces, supports and advocates for business people and organisations in Australia

and Canada.

Working in partnership with the High Commission and Canadian Consulate we are able to

offer insight for developing business opportunities between Australia and Canada. We aim

to ensure our Members receive current information on trade and commerce and have the

opportunity to build connections with key government and corporate contacts in both

Australia and Canada

We continue to strive towards building strong relationships between Australia and Canada

On the 19th March 2013, the Canadian Australian Chamber of Commerce was

delighted to hold a lunch with Mark Wiseman, President & CEO of the Canada

Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB). This sold-out event was extremely

informative and Mark Wiseman was very generous with his time and Q&A

afterwards. The event was generously hosted by KPMG.

Mark Wiseman assumed the role of President and CEO in July 2012 and is

responsible for leading the CPP Investment Board and its investment activities.

On the 12th March 2013, the Canadian Australian Chamber of Commerce held a boardroom lunch, generously hosted by Thomsons Lawyers, with Michael Brooks, Practice Group Leader of Real Estate Group Aird and Berlis LLP. The event took place at the offices of Thomsons Lawyers in Sydney CBD and was attended by 12 members and their guests.

Aird and Berlis LLP consists of a diverse group of more than 140 of Canada’s most talented lawyers. The firm provides a wide range of legal services for Banking, Corporate/Commercial, Corporate Finance, Energy, Environmental, Insolvency and Restructuring, Litigation, Municipal and Land Use Planning, Real Estate and Tax. Michael Brooks has been a member of the firm since 1990. He has been involved in numerous industry panels, has been a key note speaker at many events, and has led education efforts in real estate, including energy deregulation, real estate technology, and structuring real estate transactions.

On the 13th March 2013, the Canadian Australian Chamber of Commerce facilitated a seminar on Legal Issues in

Technology Contracts—Maximising Benefits, Minimising Risks. The event was hosted by Piper Alderman at their

Sydney CBD offices. The seminar was also conducted in Melbourne and Adelaide in March.

Effective IT systems and functionality are critical to the day to day operations of most organisations. It is, therefore,

vital that management understand how to manage the risks associated with implementing IT contracts, as well as

how to get the best out of them.

In this presentation, Piper Alderman partners, Richard Chew and Tim Clark, discuss the key issues to watch out for

when structuring IT contracts. Richard and Tim provide practical insights into this topic having worked within the IT

industry and in IT law, for both customers and suppliers.

This seminar looks at some of the key issues around technology contracts, including:

• managing the contract process

• the important constructs to focus on

• traps to avoid when entering into technology contracts

• tips on structuring the engagement with technology supplier or the customer

• how to avoid common pitfalls.

On the 1st May 2013, the Canadian Australian Chamber of Commerce held a

lunch discussion with Kevan Cowan, the President of TSX Markets (Toronto Stock

Exchange). The event was hosted by Baker & McKenzie and was attended by 14

members and their guests.

Kevan Cowan is President of TSX Markets and Group Head of Equities. Mr Cowan

is responsible for the equities business of TMX Group, including Toronto Stock

Exchange, TSX Venture Exchange and related trading and issuer services.

Mr Cowan joined the Canadian Dealing Network (CDN), in 1997 as General

Counsel and became the Director in 1999. In 2000 he became a Vice President of

the Canadian Venture Exchange (CDNX) when it acquired CDN.

Following the acquisition of CDNX by the Toronto Stock Exchange in 2002, Mr

Cowan was promoted to the role of Senior Vice President, TSX Venture Exchange

and Vice President, TSX Group.

In 2005 and 2006 he served as Senior Vice President, TSX Venture Exchange and Senior Vice President, Business

Development, Toronto Stock Exchange. In 2007, he became President of TSX Venture Exchange. He assumed his

current role in 2008.

On the 17th May 2013, the Canadian Australian Chamber of Commerce held a panel discussion on the topic of

Canadian Pension Plans Investing in Australia. The event was hosted by RBC Capital Markets and was well

attended.

The panel discussed the topic of why Canadian pension plans are coming to invest in Australia, and is this good or

bad for the country. It was a very lively discussion, with great questions put forward from the audience.

On the 14th June 2013, the Canadian Australian Chamber of Commerce held a Pre Game Reception at HiSense Arena, Melbourne, immediately prior to the first Canada vs. USA International Ice Hockey match. Nearly forty people enjoyed the reception which was graciously hosted by Prairie Heritage Wealth Management Pty Ltd.

There were two speakers at the event, both originally from Winnipeg. The first, Scott Davidson, Director of Elite Sports Properties Pty Ltd, spoke on the differences in sports agency between Canada and Australia. His talk was very informative, particularly when he contrasted the nature of NHL free agency with the approach taken with the AFL and NRL here in Australia.

Kerry Goulet, the second speaker, spoke on behalf of Stop Concussions. Stop Concussions is a not-for-profit North American organisation that was established to educate and advocate on the cause, effects, and consequences of concussions and neurotrauma injuries. Kerry is the Co-Founder of Stop Concussions and a star European hockey player. He shared information on the challenges of concussion in sports and what can be done to minimise the impact of these concussions, both here in Australia and in Canada.

Recent implementation of the Petroleum and

Commissioner at Consulate General of Canada held a celebratory reception for Canada Day in Sydney. The event

was proudly sponsored by Thomsons Lawyers and was held at their Sydney CBD offices. 68 members and their

guests attended the evening and were treated with drinks and canapés, ice hockey games, a Canadian short film

from the Possible Worlds Film Festival, a Canadian basket of goodies (drawn as a Lucky Door Prize), and a hearty

rendition of ‘Oh-Canada’, the Canadian National Anthem.

Canadian Australian Events of Interest

The eighth annual Possible Worlds Film Festival has revealed its 2013 program showcasing the best new cinema from Canada and the United States. Presented by Cosmos Tours and non-profit The Festivalists, the festival bring 20 new feature films – ten Canadian and ten American - to Dendy Opera Quays and Dendy Newtown from 8th to 18th August. Selected titles will also screen at ARC Cinema (Canberra) from 21st to 23rd August 2013. In Sydney, the Festival will open with Sarah Polley’s acclaimed documentary STORIES WE TELL and close ten days later with Sydney premiere of Joe Swanberg’s DRINKING BUDDIES, starring Olivia Wilde, Anna Kendrick, Jake Johnson and Ron Livingston. Special guests including Toronto filmmaker Sara St. Onge will be on hand to present their work and many screenings will include a complimentary welcome drink on arrival. AIMEX is a mining equipment and services trade show which has taken place every fourth year in Sydney since its

start in the 1970s. In more recent times the show has taken place at Sydney's Olympic Park. When last held in

2011, AIMEX attracted a total of 17,328 visitors: 12,188 from NSW; 1,164 from QLD; and, 3,050 from other

Australian states. Total international visitors numbered 1,299 from 49 countries. It is arguably the Asia-Pacific's

largest trade event of its type. Seventeen Canadian mining equipment and service supply companies exhibited at

AIMEX 2011. More information on AIMEX 2013 is available on URL: http://www.aimex.com.au/

More recently AIMEX organiser Reed Exhibitions determined that demand justified the show being held every

second year rather than every fourth. In 2013 eighteen Canadian companies will be present at AIMEX as

will Ontario and Quebec Provincial government representatives and the Canadian Association of Mining Equipment

and Services Equipment for Export (CAMESE). The show will run from August 20—23.

The Canadian High Commission of Canada in Canberra, in conjunction with the Consulate General of Canada in

Sydney, will work to make the Canadian companies visit to Australia and AIMEX 2013 experience as informative,

productive and worthwhile for them as possible. To this end the two offices will stage two events over the course

of AIMEX 2013 the week of August 19th as follows:

- On Monday, 19th August (the day prior to the AIMEX show’s official opening) a Market Brief on

the state of Australian mining sector activity, investment movements and likely future trends. Featured guest

speakers are Messrs. Rod Henderson, NSW Lead Partner - Energy and Natural Resources, KPMG; and, Mr David

Hand, Managing Director, Newport Consulting.

- On Wednesday, 21st August a cocktail Networking Event.

Both events will be staged at the Consulate General of Canada located in "the Rocks" area of Sydney. The audience

for the Market Brief consists of thirty or so Canadians representing the eighteen visiting Canadian companies,

Provincial government and industry association representatives above-mentioned. Attendees of the Cocktail

Networking Event taking place later in the week will include the Canadians and an equal number of Australians

participating in AIMEX 2013.
