He witnessed in 1869 a horrible ac- cident where 5 horses were dragged backwards down a hill to their deaths on a slippery street. This was a fairly common thing to happen in the days of horse cars. He and his part- ners came up with the technology and the wire rope cables that made the Cable Car system in San Francisco possible! After World War Two the Cable Cars were being replaced by buses, and a lady named Friedel Klussmann formed a Citizens Committee to save the Cable Cars. A long battle to save the cars started in 1947, and by 1954 she is credited with saving San Francisco’s Cable Cars which today are the only moving National Historic Landmark in the United States ! If you visit San Francisco you will miss a lot of what makes San Francisco a charming City if you don’t ride the Cable Cars.
