2 0 1 2 A N N U A L R E P O R T The Cable Natural History Museum connects people to Northwoods nature through

educational experiences that inspire wonder, discovery, and responsibility.

A Message from Ron Anderson, Board Chairperson By almost any measure of performance, 2012 was a successful year for the Museum. Our

exhibit “Star Power,” which highlights how we receive energy from the Sun, was of interest to

people of all ages. Our collections were enhanced by the acquisition of specimens from the

Wildlife Museum in Hayward and by receipt of a $52,000 grant. Our membership reached 579

members, a new high. Our major fund-raiser, “The Roundup” had a record number of attendees

and raised a record amount of money for the Museum. Thank you to hosts Scott and Stacey

McKinney. Because of the generosity of Museum members and donors, successful fundraisers

and the continued support of the Mary Livingston Griggs and Mary Griggs Burke Foundation,

we are able to cover our expenses.

Our two naturalists, Katie Connolly and Emily Stone are ably led by Deb Malesevich, Museum Director, and supported by Shari

Cole, Office Manager. They have been very successful in utilizing the expertise of many others, including Peter Mansfield, John

Kudlas, Cathy Zimmerman, Diane Kraemer, Mary Witt and dozens of volunteers. Thanks to all, we couldn’t survive without you.

The Museum’s Board of Directors offer support to the staff and are very committed to the future of the Museum. Retiring board

members include Jack Carlson and Patty Anderson. We thank them for their service. Newly elected board members are Anne Miller

and Larry Hanson. Anne is returning to the board after a year off and Larry joins the board with a background in chemistry.

On a sad note, Mary Griggs Burke, our founder, benefactor, and Honorary Board Chair, passed away December 8th at age 96 in New

York City. The Cable Natural History Museum is a living legacy of her lifelong love of nature.

Museums for America Grant The Cable Natural History Museum is pleased to announce

that it was awarded a large grant for collections stewardship

through the Institute for Museum and Library Services.

Museums for America grants strengthen a museum’s

ability to serve the public more effectively by supporting

high-priority activities that advance the institution’s mission

and strategic goals. Museums for America is the Institute’s

largest grant program for museums, supporting projects and

ongoing activities that build museums’ capacity to serve their

communities. The $52,000 grant will help the Museum

manage its vast collections of natural history specimens

and objects.

STAR POWER: Energy from the Sun

The Sun, our STAR, provides almost all the

energy for life on Earth. It gives us food and

keeps us warm. It makes the wind blow and plants

grow. It gives us heat, light, and the power to

move. HOW does that energy get here? HOW do

we harness it? That is the focus of the 2012-2013

exhibit at the Cable Natural History Museum.

In addition to interactive encounters with the

science of energy, the exhibit touches on both

new and old ways that we harness the Sun.

Windmills and wind turbines, lumber mills and hydroelectric

dams, root cellars and geothermal wells all play an important

part in the cultural history of Northern Wisconsin. Energy from

the Sun powered the past and it will power our future as well!

In 2012, the Cable Natural History Museum was successful in keeping operational expenses within the budget established by the

Board of Directors and in generating sufficient funds to cover those expenses. The Board challenged us to generate 62.6% of

essential revenues through a wide variety of fundraising initiatives. From the wonderful summer dinner auction at the Stacy and

Scott McKinney Farm, to the Power of the Purse luncheon, to the Golf event, and finally to the end-of-year Annual Fund solicitation,

the response of our donors was outstanding. This outpouring of support not only makes our exhibits, programs, and classes possible,

it inspires the staff, our volunteers, and the Board to strive for even greater achievements when planning future offerings.

The educational imperative that is the core of the Museum’s Mission is largely dependent upon the generosity of our donors and

members. The outstanding STAR POWER exhibit, MuseumMobile visits to regional schools, school field trips to our exhibits,

Junior and Adult Naturalist programs, and the broad array of classes, lectures, and field trips combine to provide the kind of

information that is so meaningful to the residents of our region.

This year our membership efforts targeted the many residents that live on our areas beautiful lakes. Our efforts to bring information

to this focused population has been very successful. The Museum gained over 30 new memberships and introduced the Museum to

over 1500 new families. Our mission resonates with people who choose to live on our lakes and treasure the northwoods

environment.

The Cable Natural History Museum really is “The Little Museum That Can.” And it does! Year after year, the members and donors

make it all happen. We are profoundly grateful for your support.

M U S E U M F I N A N C I A L R E P O R T

FROM BILL HANNAFORD, TREASURER

In 2012, the Cable Natural History Museum experienced

excellent revenue growth, continuing a trend that has been in

place for the past several years. Our revenue in 2012 was

$432,930, an increase of nearly 3 percent over 2011. This strong

revenue showing enabled us to realize a healthy increase in our

year-end surplus over 2011, and based on our strong 2012

performance, we again paid down a portion of our long-term

mortgage debt. In addition, a significant amount of 2012 revenue

was from contributions earmarked toward reducing our long-term

indebtedness, and debt reduction continues to be a major

financial objective of the Museum.

The outstanding balance on our line of credit continues to be

zero, and this was facilitated by stringent cost containment on the

part of the Museum staff, where for the second consecutive year

our expenses declined from the prior year. Elsewhere in this

report, President Ron Anderson details the many strategies and

events that helped us to achieve the excellent financial

performance enjoyed in 2012.

We look forward to another strong financial year in 2013.
