    CABLE BUS

    4

Cable Bus is an electrical busway that consists o an

assembly o ully insulated conductors mounted in a

ventilated metal housing, utilizing cable support blocks

to maintain cable phasing, spacing and short circuit

protection. The welded aluminum alloy enclosure is

provided in custom lengths, with each piece sized to t the

specic installation. The system includes all necessary

equipment connections, anges, cable, wall entrance

seals, re stops, elbows, osets, terminal lugs, termination

kits, and assembly hardware. A complete set o match-

marked layout drawings shows the location o each

section and accessories, or a simple and ast installation.

    Superior Reliability

60 years o engineering, design and manuacturing

o Cable Bus systems with installations in nearly every

environment, MP Husky Cable Bus is proven and tested to

be the most reliable system on the market.

Five key eatures contributing to superior reliability:

High quality cables are continuous rom termination1.to termination, eliminating aulty splices.

MP Husky Cable Bus utilizes actory insulated2.

conductors that are designed and manuactured to

    withstand the harshest outdoor environments.

Since our system design is not aected by

moisture and is ventilated or indoor and outdoor

applications, it does not require heater strips, ilter

breathers, or thermostats that competitive technolo-

gies require, leaving less parts to ail.

Each systems phasing arrangement is veriied by3.

    computer-generated Inductive Reactance Calcula-

tions to ensure optimal load balance.

The systems sh ort ci rcuit capaci ty is tested to4.

over 100,000 RMS sym. amps. Engineered polymer

support blocks provide maximum perormance and

will not decay, rot or lose structural integrity rom

exposure to weather, unlike wood or iberglass.

Top and botto m covers are vent ilate d or optimum5.

cooling o conductors to achieve a ree air rating.

Actual Heat Rise Tests prove system design.

    Lowest Cost

In most electrical applications over 1,000 amperes, Cable

Bus costs signicantly less than non-segregated bus duct

cable in tray or conduit and wire systems. As ampacity

and/or the cost o copper increases, the cost savings o

Cable Bus over other systems is even greater.

Since Cable Bus is continuous there are no power losses

rom intermediate splices or connections. Cable Bus has

a lower impedance and lower voltage drop because its

conductors are properly phased, spaced and secured in apre-engineered system. This reduces operating costs by

providing long-term energy savings. The use o paralle

conductors, combined with our ree air rating, allows you

to operate ully and efciently with smaller cables than

would be called or with other types o systems.

    Unmatched Flexibility

MP Husky Cable Bus is easily adjusted to accommodate

    unexpected dierences between engineering drawings

and actual construction, with little or no delay in the

project. Whereas rigid non-segregated phase bus duct

must be exact to make equipment terminations, MP

Husky provides additional cable and Cable Bus housing

to accommodate dierences or unoreseen obstacles that

were missed during design. I the placement o equip

ment requires a dierent bus length, supplemental Cable

Bus sections can be quickly adjusted in the eld to the

    required length.

    Introduction

MP Husky Cable Bus Systems are engineered and manuactured or superior reliability as well as to utilize less conductive material,

providing signicant savings versus non-segregated phase bus duct, conduit and wire, and other electrical eeders. As copper prices

have continued to remain at historically high levels, the savings clients realize are even greater and more important. No matter how

you look at it, MP Husky Cable Bus outperorms other electrical busways in reliability, cost and fexibility. See or yoursel why more

owners, engineers and buyers choose MP Husky Cable Bus Systems over the competition.

    CABLE BUS

    7

    CABLE BUS

Selection o the proper Cable Bus system must be under-

taken with care to assure that it compliments the design

o the overall electrical power system.

Electrical DesignTo ensure an efcient, dependable, high quality installa-

tion, every MP Husky Cable Bus System is ully engineered

with particular emphasis placed on CABLES, SYSTEM

BALANCE, SHORT CIRCUIT CAPABILITY, and GROUNDING

REQUIREMENTS. Each one o these key design consider-

ations must be analyzed separately to determine how they

    aect the overall system design.

Parallel ConductorsParallel conductors (more than one per phase) can be

used to an advantage in Cable Bus where large conduc-

tor sizes are encountered. The ampacity per circular mil

o conductor decreases as the circular mil o conductor

increases. Smaller conductors running parallel are more

exible during installation and have greater current

carrying capability than ewer, larger conductors.

Voltage DropProper system design dictates that voltage drop be

considered or both the power eeders separately as well as

the entire power system. A voltage drop o 3-4% or power

eeders and an overall o 5% or less or the entire system

are considered to be within acceptable limits. Cable Bus

is designed or low-voltage drop. Voltage drop data is

available upon request, or your specic system.

ShieldingShielding is used on power cables to conne thedielectric eld o the conductor to the cableinsulation. Shielded Power Cables are used in Cable Bus o

applications above 2500 volts and when any o theollowing conditions exist:

Where cables are subject to soot or other heavy1.deposits that may orm paths to ground.Where electrostatic discharge can eect nearby2.computerized control cables or other low levesignals.Concern or personnel saety.3.

When installing shielded cable the metallic shieldingmust be solidly grounded and the installation mustbe studied to determine the best grounding methodThis is necessary as voltage is induced in the shield o asingle conductor cable carrying alternating current dueto mutual inductance between its shield and any otheconductor in its vicinity. This induced voltage can result intwo conditions:

Metal shields bonded or grounded at multiple points1.creates shield to ground circulating currents. Themagnitude o the circulating currents depends on themutual inductance to the other cables, the current inthese conductors, and the resistance o the shield.Shields bonded or grounded at only one point wil2.

have a voltage build up in the sheath but will eliminatecirculating currents.

The length o the circuit and the load conditions wilindicate which o the above shielding methods isrequired or any particular reason. MP Huskysengineers can provide shield voltage calculations toaid the client in choosing the best grounding method

    CABLE BUS

    8

System BalanceCable Bus is a power distribution system using insulat-ed single conductor power cables with support blocksthat maintain cable spacing. Each phase consists o

one or more cables connected in parallel. The completeassembly is enclosed in a ventilated aluminum or steelenclosure or support and protection.

Parallel conductor transmission lines, using widelyspaced conductors, have been in use or many years. Theelectrical coupling between the conductors o a parallelconductor system, which is a unction o the geometryo the location o the conductors, can cause an imbal-ance in the conductor currents. In a widely spaced over-head transmission line transposition o conductors caneconomically be used to balance the conductor currents.

The spacing o the conductors in Cable Bus is onecable diameter, (i.e. one to three inches), as comparedto the typical value o thirty eet used in overhead lines. This close spacing and the relatively short lengths, ascompared to hundreds o miles or overhead lines, makethe transposition o conductors within the bus housing a

difcult challenge and sometimes practically impossible.

The objective o the Cable Bus design is to

obtain the optimum balance or an electrical circuitusing parallel conductors (no transposition) with closespacing. MP Husky has developed an Inductive ReactanceProgram which solves or the line and phase currents oa parallel conductor system using a mathematical modelo the transmission line parameters. Through the use ocomputer programs and verication by laboratory andeld testing, MP Husky has designed Cable Bus Systemswith minimal imbalance.

MP Husky Cable Bus is designed or balance o conduc-tors within a phase (intra-phase) and balance betweenthe phases (inter-phase). Many phasing arrangementswill provide inter-phase balance o currents due to the

load impedance, but the majority o these phasingarrangements provide intra-phase current imbalance.

MP Huskys Cable Bus design provides a phasingarrangement that achieves inter-phase currentbalance, as well as intra-phase current balance, thereorereducing the amount o parallel conductor imbalance toa minimum.

Short Circuit CapacityA Cable Bus system must be able to withstand thedangerous mechanical orces created by shortcircuit currents. These orces are transmitted rom theconductors to the cable supports. In the case o CableBus, the support elements include the support blocks andenclosure.

Short circuit currents are made up o two parts; asymmetrical AC component and a rapidly decreasing DC component, (Fig. 5 on next page). A Cable Bussystem must be selected so that its mechanical strengthwill withstand the maximum instantaneous current andto a lesser degree the 5-8 cycle resultant symmetricacurrent. The symmetrical current is the actual value that ahigh voltage breaker will interrupt.

    CABLE BUS

    9

    CABLE BUS

Since Cable Bus is oten used or main eeder

connections, (e.g. substation, generator or transormer to

switchgear, load centers and high voltage machines), the

available short circuit current will be that o the utility or

generator supply through the transormers. In some

cases, the Cable Bus eeds large motors and the motor

contribution to short circuit must also be considered.

Numerous tables are available listing motor contributions

    or various operating conditions.

Available ault currents can be limited to some extent by

conductor impedance. The impedance can be in the orm

o either conductor length, size or a combination o both.

The MP Husky Cable Bus design ignores these added

conductor impedance; instead the worst ault conditions

are always assumed. For design consideration a three

phase short circuit current will result in the maximum

    mechanical orces or design considerations.

I Cable Bus is ed directly rom the utility company

service then short circuit current data will be available

    rom the utility.

Where motor contributions are considered, the ault

current due to the motor eedback will be a unction

o the voltage and is usually expressed as multiples

o the motor ull load current. NEMA standards are

available which list these actors. Certied tests have been

conducted to determine the short circuit perormance o

Cable Bus using various supporting arrangements.

Short Circuit TestingThe Cable Bus systems were tested on a 600 volt, 3 phase

60Hz circuit having a power actor o less than 0.20

One end o the Cable Bus was connected to the source

terminals and the other was short circuited to create a

    three phase bolted ault.

Each test was conducted or a minimum o six cycles

Oscillograms recorded the phase currents during the

test. Still photographs and high speed color motion

pictures were taken relevant to the test.

MP Husky Cable Bus has been subjected to currents

    o 39,000, 67,500, 85,000, 100,000 and 120,000 RMS

symmetrical amperes with asymmetrical currents great-

er than 200,000 amperes. Cable Bus withstood the

mechanical orces o the test without any damage to the

    cables, support blocks or enclosure.

GroundingA Cable Bus system must aord protection to lie andproperty against aults caused by electrical disturbances.Lightning, electrical system ailures, as well as ailures in

the system connected equipment all constitute possibleault hazard locations.

For this reason, all metal enclosures o the system, as wellas non-current carrying or neutral conductors should betied together and reduced to a common potential. Thisincludes the structural steel o the building, water, steamand gas piping.

There are two distinct divisions to the system andequipment grounding problem. The system ground is theconnection o the distribution system to earth by meanso a neutral or grounded conductor and system ground-ing serves to limit the voltage, which might appear on thecircuit due to lightning or accidental contact.

Cable Bus systems should be grounded to thesubstation structure and thus to the substation groundgrid and to the building steel by means o the Cable Bussupport materials. Cable Bus should also be grounded tothe equipment or switchgear enclosure.

It is an accepted act that ground currents tend toconcentrate near power conductors and that cable

enclosures take a large portion o the ground currents;thereore, it is important to consider Cable Bus as amajor carrier o ground currents.

MP Huskys Cable Bus enclosure is rated to carry 1600Aground current. Extra ground current capacity canbe provided by the application o external groundconductors bonded to each section o Cable Bushousing.

FlexibilityMP Husky Cable Bus systems are exible and adaptable

to the many unexpected circumstances that occur during

construction. Every size and rating o Cable Bus provided

is supplied with up to 5% extra cable as well as one spare

length o housing including cover, cable support blocks

and hardware. This enables the installer to adjust ou

system in the eld to discrepancies or dierence

between engineering drawings and actual eld

construction, with little or no delay o the project. And

our compact design and radius bends allow our system to

maneuver around and t in tight clearance applications.

    CABLE BUS

The ollowing techniques are suggestedto pull cables into place:

Cables with an OD larger than 2 can be pulled by

pulling eye or a basket grip.

I the strain does not elongate or damage the

insulation then short lengths and small diametercables may be pulled with a basket grip only.

Long lengths o conductor (up to 1,000 t.), with as

many as a dozen bends, should be pulled in one

    continuous operation at a speed o 20 to 25 t. per

minute. It may be necessary to employ a braked

reel to reduce sagging o the conductor between

    horizontal rollers.

The most economical spacing o horizontal rollers

depends on the weight o cable to be pulled. In general,

the spacing o horizontal rollers should range betweenapproximately 10 t. or cable weighing over 8 pounds per

oot and 16 eet or cable weighing less than 2 pounds per

    oot.

    Ease o installation:

Typical weight o Cable Bus is 5-7 lbs. per t. (typical

weight o bar bus is 25-114lbs. per t.)

12 t. sections can easily be installed by two men - no

heavy equipment (cranes, booms, lits) are required.

    Complete installation instructions and match-marked

layout drawings make installation easy to understand

    and ast.
