Lord Alistair McAlpine made his first trip to Broome in 1979. He fell in love with the red earth streets, palm trees and frangipani, and set his heart on opening a resort on the magnificent stretch of land bordering the beautiful Cable Beach. After buying the land with a contract signed on the back of a beer coaster in the Roebuck Bay pub, he began to turn his dream into a reality. Cable Beach Club welcomed its first guests in 1988.

In the beginning, Cable Beach Club was a collection of Broome-style bungalows, a reception area, dining area and a small area for functions. At opening, it had 77 one-bedroom and 7 two-bedroom luxury bungalows. Cable Beach Club Resort was the biggest and most expensive development the sleepy town of Broome had ever seen. The project was a joint venture between Lord McAlpine and the State Government.

Perth based property group, Hawaiian, acquired Cable Beach Club Resort & Spa in 1999 and wholly own and manage the Resort today. After substantial refurbishments, guests now experience four styles of accommodation, two pools, four restaurants, Chahoya Spa by L’occitane, a gym, a mini-golf course, a water playground, tennis courts, Blue Body Buddha Sanctuary, and two conference facilities set in 21 acres of lush gardens.

A collection of Lord McAlpine’s art, antiques and artefacts that he collected on his travels through Asia and the Middle East, still adorn the grounds and rooms of the Resort. He commissioned the bluestone Lion Guards that guard the entrance and Chinese Warrior horse statues located throughout the Resort, all of which face reception.

Hawaiian enhanced the exotic collection by gifting a 3.5 metre quartz crystal Buddha to the Broome community, set in the gardens of the Blue Body Buddha Sanctuary. Hawaiian continue to add new art and artefacts to the collection for the enjoyment of our guests.

From humble origins, Cable Beach Club Resort & Spa has grown to become an integral part of the Broome experience and one of Australia’s premier resorts. Not bad for a place Lord McAlpine first described as ‘a caravan park with a rather large sewer’.
