Carol, James, of Honolulu, Hawaii, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 13, 2006 at the Queen’s Medical Center at the age of 89 years. He was born in Chicago, IL on April 27, 1917 and obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Chicago and a Masters of Arts degree from Columbia University. He served in the United States Army from August 1943 until January 1946 in Industry campaigns in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Poland, and Central Europe. After World War II he worked as a professor of speech and drama at Rutgers University. Later, he worked in radio and television broadcasting, and he received a National Billboard Award for his work on a one-man radio program. From 1970 to 1980 he worked as a tour director, teacher, entertainer and writer for various cruise ship lines. Subsequent to his marriage to Mildred Hartnett in June 1977, he moved to Honolulu where he worked part-time as a tour manager for Cartan Travel. He has appeared in numerous theatre productions and television programs such as Magnum P.I. Fantasy Island, Island Son, Hawaii 5-0, and Jake and the Fatman. His wife, Mildred Hartnett-Carroll enjoyed 24 happy years with him living in Honolulu before her death in July 2001. His family includes step-son and their spouses, John and Barbara Hartnett, Richard and Janna (deseased) Hartnett, the surviving spouse of step-son, Thomas; and step-grandchildren, Kelly, Jack, Kimberly, Shawn, Justin, Chris, Conor, and Brendan. His family and many friends will miss his sense of humor and interesting stories. They also would like to thank the doctors and nurses at Queen’s Medical Center for the wonderful care and genuine kindness they showed toward Mr. Carroll during his hospitalization. He graduated from Kapa‘a High School in 2004 and was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He is survived by his one-year-old daughter, Sianni Sydney Sakai, Sianni’s mother, Shantell Sakai, parents, Kevin and Kathleen Cram, and siblings Alicia (Cameron) States, Megan, Tyler, Joshua and Stephanie; grandparents Joann (Max) Caldwell, and Paul (Nancy) Weiser. He was preceded in death by grandmother Kathleen Weiser. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 5 at 10 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Lihu‘e Stake Center, located at 4580 Ehiku Street, near the Lihu‘e Neighborhood Center.
