    3.1.6 Dynamic Frequency Selection (DFS)

    3.1.6.1 Theory of the DFS declared by the manufacturer

    The Equipment shall employ a Dynamic Frequency Selection (DFS) mechanism to detect interferencefrom other Systems and therefore is able to avoid co-channel operation with other systems, notablyradar systems. Dynamic Frequency Selection associated with the channel selection mechanism shall berequired to provide a uniform spread of the loading of the equipment across a minimum of 14 channels( or 330MHz), or 255MHz in the case of equipment used only in the band 5470MHz to 5725MHz tofurther facilitate sharing with satellite services.

    The RLAN products will provide the specified DFS feature on the Access point device via the followingmethod:

    During initial startup (before communication between an Access point and any Stations in the RLANservice) and during normal operation when the Access Point is associated and communicating with oneor more Stations, the radio screens all packets received by the Access Point. The radio and controllerhardware records any event that caused the receiver to sense a signal above the specified threshold. Thisinformation is reported to the software driver including an estimate of the size of the event and anindication of when the event occurred. In addition, the driver logs if a valid RLAN packet was receivedin order to determine if the recorded event in not caused by an RLAN that signals.

    Once communicated to the driver, the driver sorts through all the events and searches for repetitivesignals (such as radars). The driver builds a histogram which captures the % of time of the channel isoccupied with valid 11a traffic at each power level as well as all remaining non-RLAN signals sorted bymagnitude. A periodogram is then calculated for each of the magnitude bins. The periodicities that are

    present in the events. Radar signals show two basic periodic natures. First, a given pulse burststhemselves have a quiet interval between them. Therefore the pulse bursts themselves have a periodicnature.

    The output of the periodogram is processed by the algorithm for a number of characteristics:1). Periods present that correspond to a known radar system/signal.2). Any type of periodicity (i.e. an unfamiliar radar systems).3). Periodicity corresponding to the natural periods of RLAN packets.

    The periodogram will detect the above characteristics even if there are additional events due to thermalnoise fluctuations or missed RLAN packets.

    If the Access Point detects the presence of a radar signal or other unknown periodic signal, it will switchto another channel and then repeat the detection/listen sequence to determine if there are radars presenton that channel. If the channel is clear, it begins sending beacons on that new channel so that Stations canre-associate with the Access Point. Otherwise it switches to another channel and repeats the processuntil it finds a channel with no radar signals.

    The above functionality is limited to the Access Point device in an RLAN installation. One feature will beconfigured for Station devices (e.g. WLAN PC Cards, etc.): All Station devices will be constrained to

    passive scanning mode. This ensures that Station do not transmit probe requests before detecting anavailable Access Point in the area. This prevents a Station from interfering with radar systems while tryingto locate an Access Point. Passive scanning in fully supported by the 802.11a protocol.

    The procedure for channel selection by the Access Point is as follows: The Access Point profiles allchannel before starting communication. First, any channels in which radar signals are suspected wouldnot be used in any circumstances. Second, the Access Point would avoid any channels that are alreadyheavily loaded with RLAN traffic. Finally, among the remaining channels that neither radar nor RLANtraffic, the Access Point chooses a channel randomly to begin communication. This priotization andmethod for channel selection ensures the most uniform spreading of the traffic while minimizing potentialinterference to other users of the bands. This completes the description of the radar avoidancemechanisms.

    3.1.6.2 ConclusionFrom the theory of DFS used in this product, it is for sure that this product does meet the DFSrequirement of this standard.

    3.1.7 Transmitter Power Control (TPC)

    3.1.7.1 Theory of the TPC declared by the manufacturer

    Transmitter power control shall be employed in up and downlink to ensure a mitigation factor of atleast 3 dB on the average output power of the devices under the coverage area of a satellite.

    The RLAN products will provide the specified 3 dB mitigation factor via the following means:

    When configured and sold in the European Community, the transmit power of the Access Point andStation devices will be reduced from the legal maximum by the required 3 dB mitigation factor.Therefore, the maximum transmit power level will be set below the limit specified by the applicableregulatory requirement (EN301 893 draft).

    This method of meeting the TPC clause above represents the most certain way to meet the goal of3dB mitigation of all RLAN signals in any satellite coverage area. In addition, this is the most effectivemethod for the 802.11a protocol since the 802.11a protocol depends highly on CSMA (listen beforetalk) access. With CSMA, all stations in a network must be able to detect each other. If a Stationwere to transmit at a lower power, it would risk becoming a hidden node, inviting collisions andinefficient use of the medium. Therefore any more sophisticated TPC system is likely to make thenetwork less efficient, increasing the number of collisions and retransmissions, thereby increasinginterference rather than reducing it.

    3.1.7.2 The RF output power of EUTThe RF output power in highest power level of EUT is 11.01 EIRP (refer to 5.1.2.4 of this testreport ) which is smaller than the RF power Limit of Lowest Power Level 17dBm EIRP.

    3.1.7.3 ConclusionFrom the software control theory and the RF output power of EUT mentioned above, this productdoes meet the TPC requirement of EN 301 893.

    3.1.9.2 RF Exposure Calculations:From FCC CFR47 1.1310, the maximum perissible RF exposure for an uncontrolled environment is 1mW/cm 2 .

    The Minimum Allowable Distance, R, of EUT is calculated as follows:

    Friis Transmission Formula:Pd = (Pout*G)/(4* *R 2)R= [(Pout*G)/(4* *Pd)] 1/2Pout*G = Pe.i.r.pR= [(Pe.i.r.p.)/(4* *Pd)] 1/2

    WherePd = power density in mW/cm 2=1mW/cm

    g = antenna gain(dBi)

    G = antenna numeric gain=Log -1 (g/10)Pout = output power to antenna in mWPe.i.r.p.: please refer the maximum test data of output power

    Since EUT is a Wireless LAN Adapter , the normal use distance is more than 20cm, the suitablestandrad for RF exporsure is 1.1307(b)(1) MPE test. According to the result of the output power, thecalulated minimum allowance distance of EUT is listed below:Due the Minimum Allowance Distance ,where the 1mW/cm 2 exposure limit may be exceeded, of EUT isfar below 20cm. Therefore EUT complys with the RF exposure requiement of FCC.
