BEFORE READING - Methods
KWL

Think-Pair-Share
Methods in Detail KWL – a three
columned chart where students write what they know (K), what to know (W), and what they learned (L).
Previewing – looking through the text for anything that “pops” or gives clues/hints.
Pictures – looking at images in the text for hints on what the passage is about.
Think-Pair-Share –students work together and share thoughts about what they think the text will be about.

Response Sheet
Methods in Detail
Rereading –students go back to the text and look over certain areas if needed.
Sticky Notes – use of “post its” to write thoughts to mark on certain text passages.
Response Sheets –
On one side of
paper, students write
a main/key concept.
On the other side,
the student writes
information that will
help them remember
about the concept.
AFTER READING
AFTER READING - Methods
KWL
Reflections
Discussions
Methods in Detail KWL – using the “L” in
KWL, students will write down things that they learned about the text.
Reflections – much like KWL’s students would write down as many things as they could remember about the text (either in sentences or short phrases).
Discussions – the
students can either
talk amongst
themselves about
the text, or better
yet, as a whole
class so everyone
can participate
with each other.
