S1\L63EVT EXHAUST VACUUM TRIP
Unit with VAN: Trip setpoint variable as a function of LP steam flow; PT-213A,B,C
AND exhaust pressure as per PT-213A,B,C. Refer to the unit specific GEK for a
curve.
Protection arms at speed > 300 rpm.
non-Van; Trip setpoint is fixed. Control acts on the median of PT-213A, B, C.
Three (3) conditions must exist for a Unit Trip to initiate;
(1) Speed must equal or exceed 300 rpm
(2) Alarm level of 5.0inHgA must exist
(3) Trip level of 7.5inHgA must exist
* Off-Line ETD Test Trip L83ETDOF_TRP
Normal end of an "Off-Line ETD Test"
Off-Line ETD tests for each ETD in a 2-ETD system OR for each pair in a 2-out-
3 system should be conducted before each Turbine start
*
Shutdown Trip L1SDTRIP
Normal end of an "Auto-Stop" rountine.
Once instigated an "Auto-Stop" routine unloads the unit at the rate of 20% per minute
AND at the end of 5 minutes issues a unit trip.
The operator can manually issue an "Auto Stop" command at the HMI "Speed
Control" OR loss of Generator Protection can automatically issue an Auto-Stop if
programmed.
* Auxiliary Trip 2
*
HP - Zero Speed Trip L14HR
Unit trip is initiates when 2-out-of-3 primary speed pickups sense speed equal or less
than 0.06% of rated
L14HR = 1 (L14HR "picked-up")
Trip "drops-out" with 2-out-of-3 primary speed pickups sense speed equal or greater
than 0.097% of rated (L14HR "dropped-out").
* TURBINE TRIP ON BYPASS ERROR
Not used on D11's.
Unit is above 75% rated speed and control logic has failed to select either Bypass
(Reverse) or Forward Flow. Logic investigation is needed.

HP - Turbine Speed Trip L14HP
L14HP is true when Primary Speed Probes sense unit speed equals or exceeds
15% of rated. L14HP reverts to false when speed equals or drops below 10% of
rated. Background toggles to RED when a TRIP condition exists. Primary speed
probes ST-201A, B, C
* "AND" Logicals L14HP AND L14H_ZE must both be "true" or "picked-up" for a Unit
TRIP to initiate.
* VPRO HP Zero Speed L14H_ZE
L14H_ZE is true if 2-out-of-3 Emergency Speed Probes have no speed signal.
Background toggles to RED when a TRIP condition exists. Emergency speed
probes ST-202A, B, C
* Auxiliary Trip 3
* HP Accel/Decel Rate Too High L12H_ACC_DEC
Failure of Emergency Overspeed probes AND/OR MKVI VPRO components.
Undertake a RCA investigation and resolve before any re-start.
(speed probes ST-202A, B, C)
*
Manual Emerg. Trip Circuit Activated L5E
Trip via a Manually activated pushbutton.
Manual trip pushbuttons wire in series fashion directly to MKVI. Open-to-Trip.
Typically they can be found at the ST front standard, MKVI Panel front, and adjacent
to the operators control room monitors.
*
Process Trip From BOP DCS L5E_DCS
Trip initiated from Plant Distributed Control System.
These trips are beyond the scope of GE Steam Turbine or Generator Engineering
and so specified by the owner/end user. Operators should investigate and develop a
complete list of all possible situations which can produce an L5E_DCS trip.
Typically a closed contact which is open to Trip. Site specific situations should be
verified.
*
Unit Trip Via L86G1A Lockout Relay L86TGT
Unit Trip initiated via Generator Protection at GP2100.
GE can supply protection relay hardware AND engineer relay settings, OR both
hardware and settings may be supplied by others. Often, realy protection hardware is
purchased from GE with relay settings engineered by others. Units vary widely in this
regard.
Operators should question which specific relays are used, and so which specific
relays initiate a trip.
A list should be developed. See GEK-75512 for a discussion with regards "Generator
Protection".
In any case the specific cause of the trip should be fully understood before any
reset is permitted.
* GSU Transformer Lockout Trip L86TT Unit Trip initiated via Generator Protection at GP2100.
* Gen Breaker Failure Lockout Relay Trip L86BFT Unit Trip initiated via Generator Protection at GP2100.
* Unit Trip Via L86G1B Lockout Relay L86G1B Unit Trip initiated via Generator Protection at GP2100.
* Speed Deviation Above Limit - Trip L14TNH_DEV
Primary & Emergency Speed signals deviate by more than 5%.
Fully investigate both Primary and Emegency Speed channels and produce an Root
Cause Analysis before any re-start
* Auxiliary Trip 4

safe operating limits for more than 1 second.
Position problem could be on the Active or Inactive side of the thrust
* Axial Probes Failed Trip L39AXFT 2-out-of-3 probes loacted at the thrust bearing fail for longer than 1 second.
* Axial Probes Failed or Position Trip L39APFTA Trip will initiate if one probe fails and a second probe indicates an actual trip
condition exists; thrust bearing.
* Differentail Expansion Trip 1 L39DE1TA Short or Long Differentail Trip situation has existed for more than 10 seconds and
the unit will be tripped
*
Vibration Trip L39VT
Any one or more of the 12 channels
(X & Y channels at Brg's #1, #2, #3, #4, #5, #6)
indicates shaft radial vibration in excess of 9 mils pk-pk
(shaft motion relative to bearing in one revolution)
Note; all channels are monitored for fault conditions. Channels WILL NOT initiate a
Unit Trip if in "fault". An Alarm will initiate alerting to the operator that a channel is in
"fault".
* Rotor Expansion Trip L39RE1T Rotor indicates beyond safe limits; Long or Short for more than 10 seconds.

Thrust Bearing Monitor
Notes to TBMON "Differential" function...
Alarms indicates a differential temperature problem.
Individual TC temperatures, on a given side, inactive or active, are not
uniform and so have a differential. Likely this indicates misalignment
between the thrust runner or thrust collar and the bearing.

Thrust Position
Zero benchmark position for ST Rotors = center of the thrust bearing
clearance. Thrust clearance will be verified at site via a "bump-test" after
the bearing is assembled.

Eccentricity
S1\L30ECH ECCENTRICITY HIGH
***High Eccentricity is a leading cause of failed starts***.
Operators should closely monitor their unit specific situation and restart with
low values of eccentricity.
In the past C7's set the alarm setpoint at; "last best value" plus 2 mils.
Presently all MKVI are shipped with the setpoint at 2 mils. Unit specific
setpoints are adjusted on a case by case basis with assistance from GE.
This is done in attempt to reduce failed starts. Ref. to Basic SALI GEK-
100475 50Hz for further advise with regards Turning Gear operation.

Water Induction Warnings
Water induction events should be examined closely. Performance and unit
mechanical intregity are compromised. In general it's best to continue with
operation as typically the alarms are short lived, immediate shutdown is
rarely benefical. There is little the ST Control can do to prevent water
induction. The alarm serves to alert Operations personnel that plant wide
changes are needed. A root cause analysis should be conducted to
determine what plant wide corrective actions are needed. Alarm spreads
are initially set at 50F but can be adjusted upwards to as much as 100F if
investigations warrant. GEK-72286 discusses adjustment. Contact GE for
assistance if needed. Water induction is a serious problem.

Emergency Trip Supply (ETS) Header
S1\L63HQET EMERGENCY TRIP HEADER TRIPPED
"Emergency Trip Supply" header (or FSS) supplies fluid needed to "reset"
hydraulic relays located on the MCV's, MSV's and ASV.
The ETS header, (or FSS) is always in one of two possible states;
"Tripped" or "Reset".
Switch PS-282 (NC) monitors the "ETS" header (FSS Fluid).
PS-282 indicates ETS (FSS) Tripped on decreasing 200 psig
PS-282 indicates ETS (FSS) Reset on increasing 300 psig
MCV's, MSV's and the ASV should immediately close on a Trip.
In a 3 ETD system, any 2 energized & healthy ETD's will allow the ETS
(FSS) header to pressurize.

Turning Gear
With the C7 in production the Turning Gear should be kept in Auto.
This provides the highest level of reliability/availability as in the event of an
unexpected shutdown the unit will automatically "go-on" gear and so be in
the best possible condition for any restart.
LOGIC, on shutdown IF in AUTO, the PBM will start IF all ST SV's are
closed AND LO permit is OK. Once at "Zero-Speed" (L14HRA=1) the air
piston will force the gear into engagement and PBM will stall. With
engagement established via ZS-288, a 10 second timer counts down and
then the TGM starts AND the PBM stops. Turning Gear

S1\L30TGL TURNING GEAR LIMIT SWITCH TROUBLE
The MKVI uses two limit switches to indicate engaged OR dis-engaged
position of the turning gear.
The switches currently indicate a mutually exclusive condition. One
indicates the Turning Gear is Engaged while the other indicates it is Dis-
engaged, OR vice-versa. These switches are critical to proper automatic
sequencing; immediate investigation is needed.

S1\L30TGS TURNING GEAR NOT ROTATING TURBINE
Turning Gear Engage Limit switch indicates the Turning Gear is engaged,
AND the zero-speed relay is picked-up (L14HR=1) indicating speed is
below the zero speed set-point of 0.06% of rated.
Comment: When on Turning Gear turbine rotor speed should be enough
to "drop-out" the zero-speed relay, or above 0.09% of rated. Investigate.

"AND" HP Steam Header > 30 Psig (2.1 kg/cm2).
Valves close when the main breaker (52G) is closed.
S1\L30MOV_SSV1A MOV SSV1A NOT IN AUTO MODE
Alarm has two possible drivers
(1) operator has placed the valve in "Manual" at the HMI,
OR
(2) valve actuator has been placed in "Local".
Drains should be placed in Auto and so open and close as commanded by
the MKVI.
Any drain valve NOT reporting OPEN drops out "All Drains Open"...
L33DRAINS_OP=0. This then drop's out L33DRAIN_PER which in turn
drops out "Turbine Ready to Start" L3START=0. ATS sequence will not
initiate, the Turbine cannot be started in Auto.
S1\L30SSV1A_OPN MOV SSV1A OPEN AND HEADER PRESSURE LOW
Position feedback indicates the drain open, while HP Main Steam header is
below 30 psig. There is concern with regards water induction; backflow if
the drain is plumbed to a receiver/ADT. The drain should be closed with
the header below 30 psig.
S1\L30SSV1A SSV1A POSITIONING PROBLEM
Time to reach desired position has exceeded 30 seconds.
(1) Check the valve manually.
(2) 4~20mA valve position feedback device could have problems.
Any drain valve reporting a "positioning" alarm drops out "Drain Valves
Healthy"... L33DRAINS_OK=0. This then drop's out L33DRAIN_PER
which in turn drops out "Turbine Ready to Start" L3START=0. ATS
sequence will not initiate, the Turbine cannot be started in Auto.

S1\L30GMFLT_A GENERATOR OVERHEATING NOT VERIFIED
Possibilities ... (1) The GCM indicated overheating but could not verify the
indication. (2) The GCM has verifed an alarm and is automatically collecting
a sample or the operator has manually requested verification (3) the GCM
continuously monitors itself and alarms various internal faults, the operator
can interrogate the GCM loaclly via the four-button membrane-switch
keypad, see Table #4 GCM-Statue. E-One refers to this as the "Trouble
Relay". One of three general purpose relays wired at GCM-X J1, GE
device = 30gmfault (signal = l3gmflt)
*
S1\L30GMS_A GMS INDICATED GENERATOR OVERHEATING
The GCM "Ion Chamber Detector" (ICD) has indicated a high level of
thermally decomposed particiles (or is completely off scale high,
>95%). Particles are produced when generator insulating materials
overheat. Also called the "Warning" level, with a factory setpoint of 70%,
the level is adjustable from 50~80%. A well calibrated GCM will indicate
80%. The GCM will automatically instigate a "verification" process when the
ICD drops below 50% for 4 seconds. Actual GCM ICD output is read locally
at he GCM panel via an LED bar graph. This alarm will require a manual
reset at the GCM panel. MKVI notification is provided by one of three
general purpose relays wired at GCM J1, E-One refers to this as the
"Warning Relay"; GE device = 30gmsalarm (signal = l26gms)

*
S1\L63GGPHA GENERATOR H2 GAS PRESSURE HIGH
PCV-2935 should automatically control machine pressure. PCV-2935 could
"stuck". Set-Point for this alarm will be 4 psig above unit rating, so 34 psig
for a 30 psig unit, 49 psig for 45 psig machine, etc.. MKVI monitors PT-
2950 to generate this alarm.
*
S1\L63GGPLA GENERATOR H2 GAS PRESSURE LOW
PCV-2935 should automatically control machine pressure. If PCV-2935 is
wide open and machine gas pressure is still dropping then a substansial H2
leak is occurring and the machine should be secured. Set-Point will be 2
psig below unit rating, so 28 psig for a 30 psig unit, 43 psig for 45 psig
machine, etc.. MKVI monitors both PSL-290 (63GL-1) and PT-2950, either
can trigger the alarm.

S1\L71SDH_ALM SEAL OIL DRAIN LIQUID LEVEL HIGH
Oil level at the CE SDE Enlargement is too high. Immediately check the
Float Trap for proper operation. If level at the Trap is out-of-sight high,
immediately manually bypass the float trap until such time as a level is
again visible in the float trap sight glass. This operation will require a
dedicated operator. The operator can manually drain LSH-3401 in an
attempt to guage oil quanity. High level danger is twofold, (1) a high oil
level at the SDE will first contaminate, and render useless the H2 monitors
(2) extra high levels will eventually spill past the inner oil deflectors and
contaminate the stator.
*
S1\L63DSA_LA SEAL OIL DIFF PRESSURE LOW
At Generator centerline Seal Oil pressure is kept greater than Generator
Hydrogen by a 5 psi delta. PDSL-3402 monitors this delta and is set to
alarm when this delta at machine centerline drops below 4.5 PSID. As
PDSL is located at the seal oil skid elevation and not directly at machine
centerline. Fir this reason the actual actuation set-point of the switch needs
to be compensated at each installation. PDSL needs to operate when the
psid; Seal Oil to Machine Gas Pressure "at-unit-centerline" has dropped
below 4.5 psi. (see GEK-95180 for Generator Seal Oil details)
NOTE #1: PDSL 3406 also located at the seal oil skid needs similar
compensation. It will start either the EBOP or ESOP at 2.5~3.5 psid.
NOTE #2 PS-3404 will start start either the EBOP or ESOP when supply oil
pressure being delivered the to skid drops below 65~80 psig. For both Note
#1 & #2 see the unit specific Device Summary for actual set-points.

S1\LCVT_EVT CONTROL VALVE TRIGGER OCCURRENCE
The MKVI has "triggered" MCV closure.
MKVI Main Control Valve trigger function looks at the max error between
the position reference and actual valve position. When error exceeds 10%
the trigger is "pullled". Irregardless of which MCV is in error, both MCV's
will "fast" or "quick" close via the FASV's This is done prevent excessive
turbine acceleration and so limit max overspeed rpm. Once the danger of
excessive speed passes the FASV will de-energize and the MCV will revert
to an open position at whatever speed signal is the minimum.

S1\L30L_IPL_FL INLET PRESS FIXED LEVEL LIMITER LIMITING
"IPL Fixed Limiter" control sub-system is controlling the MCV by
placing a upper limit on it's open position. This subsystem is not
automatic , it must be enabled by the operator. It must be dis-abled for
start-up. This protection works to close the CV's if main steam pressure
drops below a fixed pressure set-point. Again this is used only at operator
discertion. Provides for protection against water induction and may help to
save a Boiler from tripping. GEK-107151 provides the basic concept and
discuss the "Rate Sensitive" Limiter in detail.
*
S1\L30L_IPL_RS INLET PRESS RATE SENSITIVE LIM LIMITING
"IPL Rate Limiter" control sub-system is controlling the MCV by
placing a upper limit on it's open position. Automatically enabled at all
times. This protection works to close the CV's if the “rate” of main steam
pressure decay exceeds the preset valve (changeable via constants
internal to the control, GE will provide initial settings, these may requiure
adjustment as per site conditions). Provides for protection against water
induction and may help to save a Boiler from tripping. See GEK-107151
*
S1\L30L_VPL VALVE POSITION LIMITER CONTROLLING
"VPL Limiter" control sub-system is controlling the MCV by placing a
upper limit on it's open position. Initially set on reset at CV wide open
position (120.0%) this function must be manually engaged if the operator
wishes such a limit. Operator can use to set a maximum limit (mechanical
stop) on the open position of the CV's. Can be used for CV testing or as a
safety device if balance of plant considerations demand the ST CV "not"
open wide.

S1\L30L_AFL ADM PRESS CTRL FLOW LIMITED
Open position of the ACV is limited by the "Admission Flow Setpoint"
(AFLR). Contained within the APC sub-system is a flow control which is
generally used to ramp pressure control in and out of service. When
reset it defaults to zero holding the ACV closed, it's limit must be removed
via the operator at HMI or by a remote DCS signal (taken to 128%) such
that the APC signal controls upper open position of the ACV.
*
S1\L30L_APL ADMISSION PRESSURE LIMITING
"APL Rate Limiter" control sub-system is controlling the ACV by
placing a upper limit on it's open position. Automatically enabled at all
times. This protection works to close the ACV if the “rate” of Admission or
LP steam pressure decay exceeds the preset valve (changeable via
constants internal to the control, GE will provide initial settings, these may
requiure adjustment as per site conditions). Provides for protection against
water induction and may help to save a Boiler from tripping. See GEK-

S1\L30SDTRIP SHUTDOWN TRIP
Alarm provides indication that an automatic "shutdown-Trip" was
initated by the MKVI. Two possible situations cause this trip; #1 Operator
has manually issued an "Auto Stop" command, unit sheds load at the a
rate of 20% minute, gen breaker opens on the reverse power relay, MKVI
Trips the ST (Shut-down Trip) (see HMI screen "Speed Control" for the
Auto-Stop command pushbutton) #2 An automatic
shutdown has been initiated as the result of DGP Protection Failure

S1\L30STBK LOAD SETBACK IN PROGRESS
Alarm indicates a remote input to the MKVI has requested rapid
closure of the Main Control Valves. The Load-Setback function is
optional and provides a way for a remote customer input to quickly close
the steam control valves. Rate of closure is site specific. Reason for
initiation of the Setback is also site specific; bascially an abnormal plant
condition demands rapid closure of the steam inlet valves. Closure is
accomplised via the VPL sub-system.

S1\L27DZA 125VDC UNDERVOLTAGE
MK VI VCMI voltage monitor. Alarm if (+125V - (-)125V) < 90 VDC. Could
be a partial ground on either the -125 or -125 side of the DC bus to or in the
MK VI. Don't recommend troubleshooting while turbine running, Measure
each side to ground to see which is grounded and investigate ground from
there.
*
S1\L64D_PNA 125VDC GROUND
MKVI VCMI monitors +125V and -125V legs for ground. See GEH-6421I
Vol 1 Chapter 8 for actual alarm specifics. Advise against troubleshooting
on-line. Each side can be measured to confirm alarm condition. This
should be investigated and resolved at the earliest possible oppurtunity.
Typically caused by short or partial short to ground on one or more MK VI
I/O's. (typically found on digital I/O). Common during commissioning and
may occur if any re-wiring done during commercial ops. Could also be in
DC supply to DC breaker panel or to MK VI. Measure from each bus to
ground. Should be an even split of +/- 62.5 VDC. If + is less, then ground is
on (+) bus, if (-) is less, then ground is on (-) bus. Once suspect bus is
determined troubleshoot cause or contact GE.
