You may get deviated from yourgoals and work this week. Hence,Ganesha advises you to maintain yourfocus and try to control your waver-ing mind. You need to maintain yourcomposure, both in your personaland professional life. Work burden onyou may increase too much, and youmay have to put in extra hours to fulfilall your work obligations. You shalldo it without complaining, since youdon’t like to pass the buck as far aswork and taking responsibility for it isconcerned.
This week, you may face unduepressure at work. Pacing yourself withthe set deadlines may become an is-sue, feels Ganesha. Due to your un-necessary attention to detail, you mayalso get stuck in unproductive pur-suits, affecting your work adversely.Hence, you are advised to discard thistendency in you and get your act to-gether, otherwise more trouble on thework front may embroil you. On thefinancial front, you will be anxious tosave much from your earnings.
This is a favourable period to for-mulate plans for fulfilling all your am-bitious goals and targets. Consult yournear and dear ones, and wait for abetter time to initiate new projects.Don’t make any major decision inyour life, which may affect your sta-bility. If you are married, avoid thetemptation of an extra martial affair.Rather stay loyal to your spouse.
This week, be careful and do not letunscrupulous or shrewd people takeundue advantage of you, warnsGanesha. You are all set to make excellentprogress on the work front, and youmay accomplish a lot, making youfeel happy and positive. Ganeshaadvises you not to be judgemental inyour approach towards others, andshun all your misconceptions. Also, don’t be gullible, as due to yoursimple and uncomplicated nature, youmay be taken for a ride by peoplewith some vested interests and ulte-rior motives. Try to strike a good equa-tion with people around you.
A favourable and a fun-filled weekis on the cards for you, saysGanesha. It is good that you take alogical and a practical approach to-wards your life and work. However, sometimes, you have to look at thingsfrom a different perspective alto-gether, which shall also give a fillip toyour creativity. Now, you will also tryto broaden your knowledge by in-teracting with various types ofpeople. This is not a favourable pe-riod for litigation and legal hassles –steer clear or postpone.
During this week, you may be pronetowards taking undue stress, mostlyabout your work and your perfor-mance in the assignments allotted toyou. In 1959, 18-year-old Tariq Abbas de-parted from Lahore and arrived in New YorkCity, en route to Dallas where he had beenplaced through the American Field Serviceforeign exchange program. Texas, he soonrealized, wasn’t exactly the America heimagined: “I only knew of New York… Ihad no idea, no concept of what to expector what I was going.”
In 1973, Mamata Misra left Mumbai forMaryland with her husband of six weeks, andcame to her own conclusions about the coun-try she had just adopted: “I realized that fordays and months I would be meeting onlystrangers talking strange and it was up tome to make friends out of strangers and cre-ate familiarity out of the unfamiliar.”
These two snapshots form a part of the“First Days Project,” a new initiative by theSouth Asian American Digital Archive(SAADA) to collect and share stories fromSouth Asians about their first day in theUnited States. An ambitious and interactiveonline exhibition, the First Days Project cre-ates a platform for community members toupload and share the story of their first dayin the U.S.
As Abbas and Misra’s stories illustrate, the first days in a new country can be full of bothexcitement and anxiety, a sense of loss and gain, and a mixture of other emotions. It was with thatin mind that SAADA Executive Director Samip Mallick began to imagine the First Days Project.“As the South Asian American community is starting to see its second and third generation in theU.S., it is imperative to begin to document these stories and provide a way for generations toconnect with each other,” Mallick explains. “Through interviewing my parents about their firstdays I learned something new about their experiences, hopes and dreams when first arriving inthis country.”
With the First Days Project, SAADA continues its longstanding effort to showcase storiesthat reflect the diversity of the South Asian diaspora. According to the 2010 census, there aremore than 3.4 million Americans of South Asian heritage, a growth in 81% between 2000 and2010. In other words, 1 in every 100 Americans traces their heritage to South Asia, whichincludes India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bhutan and Maldives. Yet there isalso a critical danger in narratives of South Asian Americans being lost, particularly the onesleft out of history books and not featured in the media. Stories like Tariq Abbas and MamataMisra’s underscore just how diverse and complex the lives of South Asians in the U.S. havebeen. The First Days Project reveals the intimate details of arrival that are often lost in thegrand sweep of history.
First Day stories will be accepted through August 31, 2013 and can be submitted as video oraudio (up to 3 minutes) or text (up to 300 words). Submit your own story or interview a familymember or friend. No story is too big or too small.
You can browse stories, learn more and submit your story at www.saadigital archive.org/firstdaysBased in Philadelphia, the South Asian American Digital Archive (SAADA) is the only indepen-dent nonprofit organization in the nation working to document the rich histories of South Asiansin the United States and ensuring that this community’s stories are protected and preserved forfuture generations.
All materials and stories that SAADA collects are made freely accessible to the public through itswebsite at www.saadigital archive.org
