C1 PARENTS’ DAY, 19 FEBRUARY 2016

Managing the Transition to College

Making a smooth transition from secondary school to junior college is important for your child. Our aim is to build on your child’s strong foundation, and prepare him/her well for university and beyond. These two years are thus crucial in developing your child’s independence and ability to adapt to new situations and environments. To enable your child to experience a fulfilling and engaging JC life, we need your help and support. Getting a new school year off to a good start can positively impact your child’s attitude, confidence, and performance, both socially and academically. All our students soon learn to adapt to a more rigorous and structured GCE A-Level curriculum. They also learn to confront the demands and expectations associated with preparing for an important national examination. Other than the academic rigor, your child may face a more hectic schedule from co-curricular activities (CCAs), especially during national competitions, or when preparing for school projects or drama productions. As a young adult, it is important for your child to learn to manage his or her time effectively, as well as strike a good balance between studies and non-academic activities. Here, a positive mind-set and self-discipline can help your child to navigate the transition successfully. Different students develop different coping strategies. You can help by encouraging your child, planning ahead, and being realistic. As partners, we also need you to support our teachers who are committed to seeing our students succeed. We have prepared this handout to further help you understand and appreciate what your child is going through in school. In the end, we want every individual not only to manage the transition, but also to flourish.

1 WHAT THE SCHOOL STANDS FOR 1.1 Our Vision Defining holistic education and empowering our students to live with passion and lead with compassion. 1.2 Our Mission We nurture leaders in research, industry and government to serve the nation. 1.3 Our Core Values

自强不息 [Tireless self-improvement with tenacity, innovation and passion]

己立立人,己达达人 [Win – Win]

饮水思源 [Remember the source from which you drink water – Appreciating our

benefactors] 1.4 Our School Values Hwa Chong emphasizes academic excellence, including a holistic education based on character education and values inculcation. Remembering ‘PIIER’, the values embedded in all aspects of a Hwa Chong education, will contribute to a positive and productive college experience for your child.

Passion 积极乐学

Hwa Chong provides the platform for our students to expand their worldview and explore their interests. Our structured curriculum and supportive teachers are there to provide a helping hand to students who are passionate towards learning and wish to develop their interests into life-long commitments.

Integrity 正直诚信

A Hwa Chong student is expected to uphold the highest standard in their character and behaviour at all times. The school rules are in place to develop aspects of accountability and personal responsibility in students and towards other people. They are responsible for their actions and students’ poor behaviour can warrant demerit points. Accumulated demerit points can affect final grades and eligibility for certain awards such as the Hwa Chong Diploma. A list of school rules and regulations will be uploaded on the Parent’s Portal on ISP for your reference.

Innovation 善思创新

Our numerous academic programmes (SMTP, GATE, HP, LEP, Research, H3) and a school-wide teaching framework focus on teaching for thinking, provide opportunities for our students to innovate and forge breakthroughs in accordance to their level of ability and interest. Our varied Co-Curricular Activities (CCAs) also provide the platform for students to pursue their passion and take ownership in bringing their CCAs to greater heights.

Empathy 仁爱仁心

In Hwa Chong, our strong emphasis on Community Involvement Project (CIP) and student-initiated Service Learning (SL) projects nurture students who are compassionate, sensitive and responsive to the needs of the community. Through our local and overseas programmes, we hope to develop

Page 7: C1 Parents' Day Handout

7

in our students a strong social conscience and a sense of belonging and commitment to the community, cultivating a lifelong passion for volunteerism and helping others.

Responsibility 尽力尽责

Learning is a continuous process that challenges you to perform better each time. The GCE ‘A’ Level syllabus requires one to have diligence, a positive work ethic, perseverance and take responsibility of one’s learning to succeed. At the same time, our students need to learn to manage their commitment to their CCA and this requires a lot of determination, forward planning and responsibility to achieve.

5 AREAS TO NOTE

5.1 Attendance in school

Attendance during school term is compulsory. If a student fails to attend school because of illness, injury or any other valid reason, he/she must produce a valid medical certificate or a letter of excuse from his/her parents to his/her Civics Tutor immediately upon return to the school. Please take note that the number of parent’s letter per term should not exceed THREE and if your child requires prolonged leave, it is necessary to inform the school and provide medical documents to support the request. Your child’s Civics Tutor will be able to assist with the request. Students may also be granted leave on compassionate grounds such as death in the immediate family or emergencies at home. However, prior approval has to be sought in writing from the Deputy Principal/Studies before commencement of the leave. Similarly, the Civics Tutor will be able to assist with the request. Parents are highly discouraged from taking their child out of school during term time for overseas holidays. Any student found absent from school or lessons without a valid reason will face consequences that include demerit points or other serious disciplinary actions.

5.2 Leaving school

The school is accountable for the safety of all students on days when they are attending school. Hence, no student is allowed to leave the school premises before 1.00 p.m. on normal weekdays without permission. If a student needs to leave the school premises for any valid reason (e.g. illness, school competitions etc.), he/she must fill in an out-of-campus pass. A valid medical certificate or parent’s letter of excuse (for emergencies only) should be provided to the Civics Tutor on the next school day.

5.3 Attendance for Tests and Examinations

All students must sit for all scheduled tests and examinations for all the subjects that they are taking. A student who is absent from a test or examination due to illness must produce a valid medical certificate. A parent’s letter will not be accepted, unless on compassionate grounds. They may be required to sit for a supplementary paper for the examination. Otherwise, no marks will be awarded for that test and “absence without reason” will be indicated in the students’ records. Such students will not be allowed to sit for a retest (if any).

5.4 Who to approach for advice

Starting in a new environment, it is natural if your child experiences some anxiety. With your support and encouragement, most children are resilient and will thrive throughout their school experience. Suggest to your child some strategies to manage a difficult situation on his or her own and let them know that it will be fine once they become familiar with classmates, teachers and the school routine. Share your child’s concern with the teacher and maintain open lines of communication with the school. Our teachers and school counsellors are happy to support your child during this period of time. You may wish to contact the school to set up an appointment to meet with your child’s Civics Tutor or the school counsellor. They may be able to offer direct or indirect support that will help identify and address the issue. They may also suggest other resources within the school and the community to help you.

In addition, we have a team of teachers who can provide you with more information about the school should you require it.
