Chicago White Sox Charities (CWSC) was launched in 1990 to support the Chicagoland community. CWSC provides annual financial, in-kind and emotional support to hundreds of Chicago-based organizations, including those who lead the fight against cancer and are dedicated to improving the lives of Chicago’s youth through education and health and well-ness programs and offer support to children and families in crisis. In the past year, CWSC awarded $2 million in grants and other donations. Recent contributions moved the team’s non-profit arm to more than $25 million in cumulative giving since its inception in 1990. Louisville Slugger 125 model M216 bat has “Michael Jordan” and “Chicago White Sox” block lettered into the bar-rel. The bat measures 35” long and weighs 32.2oz. His number, “45”, has been writ-ten on the knob in silver marker. Touch of light surface wear with little, if any, evident use. Though his stint in the game was brief, and less than successful, Jordan captivated fans with his attempt at breaking into the Major Leagues. Substantive material from this important period in his Legendary ca-reer is notably scarce and pieces with such strong and direct first hand provenance are rarely offered. A light coat of pine tar remains on the handle along with a ring of tape just above the knob. What appear to be the letters “MO” are written on the knob in silver marker. Choice example dates to his fourth Silver Slugger Award winning season during which he hit .328 with a career high (43) homeruns. Rarely offered which such direct and iron clad provenance. Incredible usage wear can be found throughout with nearly the entire upper exterior surface covered in now dry pine tar. Thome is well known for his forever “dirty” helmet and often touched his hands to his head while at bat to enhance grip. Thome is recognized to have used very few helmets over the course of his career and we can cite no others which have recently come up for auction. With regard to the direct first hand provenance, notoriety level of the player, and overall usage characteris-tics, we would rank this among the better modern era game used pieces which we have ever offered. The following lot numbers 53-185 originate from the personal collection of Orestes “Minnie” Minoso. The col-lection features a large selection from Minoso’s storied career, which began in the Cuban and Negro Leagues in the 1940s continuing with the Cleveland Indians and Chicago White Sox. Minoso was a seven-time American League All-Star and remains to date one of the most revered figures in White Sox franchise history, having his No. 9 retired in 1983. The items have been consigned directly by the Minoso family and are being offered for

the first time publicly.

Handsome mahogany plinth style base and backsplash having applied engraved brass appointments denoting Minoso’s inclusion among the American League Gold Glove recipients. The brass placards on base and backsplash each display some mild areas of “pitting” under the polished surface from age corrosion. Overall appearance is very fine. Minoso’s prowess as an exceptional defensive outfielder was well known during the 1950-60s era consistently ranking among the elite players in the league. 111 Important 1959 Minnie Minoso Chicago White Sox AL Championship ring. Minnie Minoso played for the Chicago White Sox from 1951-57 developing into an elite player with three All-Star appearances and finished within the top five for the AL MVP voting twice. His exceptional play and leadership, exhibited both on and off the field, played a substantial role in the White Sox resurgence as a winning club during the 1950s era. At the end of the 1957 season Minoso was traded to the Cleveland Indians for pitcher Early Wynn. The trade proved to be a key move by the club en route to the “Go Go White Sox” of 1959 who captured the American League pennant. Although Minoso enjoyed several of the finest seasons of his career with the Indians he was deeply disappointed not to have been able to participate in the magical 1959 season with the White Sox. In December of 1959, White Sox owner Bill Veeck traded with the Indians again to get Minoso back with the team. In appreciation for all that Minnie had done for the club dur-ing the 1950s period in contributing to their success in 1959 Minoso was presented with a 1959 AL Championship ring in the beginning of the 1960 season. It was an unprecedented and significant gesture which clearly illustrated the high regard in which Minoso was held by the White Sox franchise and Veeck himself. Offered is the original 1959 Chicago White Sox American League Championship ring as presented to Minoso by Bill Veeck. Elegantly simplistic in design the 14K gold ring features an inset panel on top with a central diamond having “White Sox” gold inlay on royal blue field. “American League Champions 1959” lettering encircles the center panel. “O.Minoso” name engraved on the interior ring band along with proper Balfour 14K hallmarks. Overall condition is very fine with some expected wear to the surface area of the ring top including a small fissure in the blue field under the diamond. Highly desirable and significant championship ring which is most certainly one of the more important Chicago White Sox championship rings to have been offered publicly. Prestigious display piece is that which was pre-sented by the Chicago White Sox upon the re-tirement of Minoso’s famed number “9.” The frame measures just over 18”x18” and houses a pinstriped cloth background on which “Mino-so 9” letters and number have been affixed. At the time of the 1983 ceremony it was only the third time the Franchise had so honored one of their past players. Though it may be somewhat unassuming in appearance, the historic impor-tance of this piece can not be overstated and it is likely that it is the first of it’s type to have to come to market. Callahan was a former professional baseball player, manager, and entrepreneur from the 1890s through the first quarter of the 20th century. Notably, Callahan took part in the famed 1913-14 World Tour which featured members of the Chicago White Sox and New York Giants and spanned over five continents and 38,000 miles. Callahan’s wife, Josephine, chronicled the amazing voyage in her personal journal inclusive of numer-

The bat is side writ-ten in grease pencil, “34oz. Ben Chapman 5-29-39” indicating return to the factory to be used as a model for future orders. Accordingly, it was then vault marked “C10” on either end. Although they would not play on the same team until the 1941 White Sox season, Appling and Chapman had crossed paths before when both represented the American League at the 1936 All-Star Game. It was likely at this point, or another meeting, that Chapman secured one of Appling’s bats and took such a liking to the model that he asked it be used as the template for his future orders. 245 Extremely scarce Peanuts Lowery 1945 Chicago Cubs National League Championship ring. The 1945 National season was finally to be “the year” for baseball fans on the North Side of Chicago. After besting the might St. Louis Cardinals to capture the NL pennant the Cubbies took a 2 games to 1 lead in the World Series over the Detroit Tigers with the series headed back to Chicago. It appeared as though the championship drought was about to end. Enter Mr. Williams “Billy Goat” Sianis (Owner of Chicago’s famed Billy Goat Tavern). Sianis had purchased two tickets to Game #4 at Wrigley Field, one for himself and one for “Murphy” his pet Billy Goat. Based on the uncomfortable “aroma” emitted from Murphy the Wrigley Field ushers asked Sianis to leave the stadium. As legend and local lore have it, Sianis was said to have exclaimed that “The Cubs ain’t gonna win no more. The Cubs will never win a World Series so long as the goat is not allowed in Wrigley Field.” The rest was history as the Cubs lost 3 of the next 4 games to lose the Series and the “Curse of the Billy Goat” was born. The offered 1945 Chicago Cubs NL Championship ring represents the first documented example to have been sold at public auction. Handsome 14K gold ring fashioned in the classic style of other 1940s era championship rings having a central inset diamond set within a red field. Diamond is sur-rounded by gold lettering inlaid on blue enamelwork, “National League Champions”. Side panels feature ornate baseball décor with crossed bats, glove, and ball having “Cubs” titling at top. 1945 dating is found (across both side panels, 19 and 45) near the top portion. Interior ring band is properly marked 14K with “Peanuts Lowery” name engraved within. Overall condition is outstanding with some relatively minor surface wear predominantly to the top panel. The scarcity of war time championship rings, particularly NL or AL titles, is well established. The extreme rarity of this particular ring may well be explained by a combination of factors not limited to war time economics, low player salaries, limited desirability, and the fact that players themselves were required to purchase the rings. This factor is clearly referenced in Baseball’s Natural: The Eddie Waitkus Story by John Theodore (page 32). Here the author states that “Waitkus even owned a Cubs National League Championship ring, although he was in Japan when the Cubs were win-ning the pennant. Cubs Owner P.K. Wrigley had the championship ring designed especially for his players-he was proud of his team. But he was not totally benevolent; the players had to purchase the rings.” Highly coveted vintage championship ring which ranks among the most sought after of any ring for its type of the era. The following lot numbers 330-422 originate from the personal collection of legendary Hall of Fame sportswriter Jerome Holtzman. Born and raised in Chicago, Holtzman’s legacy spanned over 50 years starting as a copy boy with the Chicago Daily News in 1943. Widely regarded as one of America’s foremost baseball writers it was said of him by Southern Humorist Lews Grizzard, “He never smiled, but he had the keys to Cooperstown. No major leaguer ever got into the Hall of Fame if Holtzman didn’t want him there.” Holtzman’s career continued with numerous prestigious accolades including receipt of the 1991 J.G. 355 Historically significant Jerome Holtzman file related to “saves” statistic. Although the term had been losely used in the decade before, in 1960 Jerome Holtzman concieved of more statistically sound method for recording “saves.” Adopted, at his urging, by noted Sporting News publisher J.G. Spink, the pair ran the numbers in his week-ly newspaper for (9) years. In 1969, the “save” was officially adopted by Major League baseball. Presented is an intact file, as found within the Holtzman Archive, which appears largely to re-late to his work on “saves.” Most notable is a May 27, 1960 file copy typed letter from Holtzman to Spink in which he first introduces and promotes further use of the save. 423 Rare 2005 Pedro Lopez Chicago White Sox World Series Championship ring. The 2005 Chicago White Sox captured the hearts of the South Side faithful with a combination of talented and gritty players. The team ended the season with an American League best record of 99-63 en route to a convincing sweep of the Houston Astros in the World Series. The title was the first for the club since the 1917 season ending a drought of nearly 90 years. Tastefully executed ring with a diamond appointed “Sox” team logo displayed on upper black stone background encircled by a total of (58) ad-ditional diamonds in two rows. On one shank, in relief, is the text “World Champions 2005” with the “11-1” postseason record noted below. Opposite has the player name “Lopez” along with regular season “99-63” team record, MLB logo, and player number “62.” The ring is size (9.5-10) with no mentionable wear and is marked “Jostens 14K” on the interior band. Included original box is one of the more substantive of its’ type with inset team logo on top, Millennium trophy on front, and a “Pedro Lopez” nameplate affixed. One of only a scant few examples to have entered the public market place. Includes letter of provenance from Pedro Lopez: NM ($20,000-$40,000)
