So you’ve registered for the PNA Champs meet. Now what?: Congratulations for registering for PNA Champs. Here are a few tips to keep the

courage and confi-dence up until you get through the meet. First is to believe! Yes you can! You are great, you can swim the events you choose with grace and speed and yes, your goggles will stay on. Whatever you focus on will come true so keep it positive. Between now and the meet, practice at least two dives at each workout. In 1926, the first organized competi-tive swim between Vashon Island and Point Defiance in Tacoma, WA was held across approximately two miles of open water, following the ferry route used today. Now we are making it possible to repeat this historic feat! Blue Wave Aquatics is proud to an-nounce the second annual Swim Defi-ance taking place at Commencement Bay, in Tacoma, Washington. The swim has been moved to June 21, 2015 this year We welcome back returning swim-mers as well as everyone else plan-ning to participate in June for the first time. Swim Defiance offers a 3k and 5k event; participants for both events will receive the following: Special random prize drawing for par-

ticipants and volunteers while waiting for the last person to finish. The website is now online and has all

the information you need. Be sure to save the date and make this the first open water race of the Northwest open water swimming season a great success. More info at: http://www.swimdefiance.com

“Winning isn’t every-

thing as they say,

but winning is

something”

PNA Champs is set for April 11-12, 2015 at the King County Aquatic Cen-ter. One of the nice things about Champs is that it is a chance for our entire team to get together as a group and compete together. I’ve noticed that swimmers, like fish, love to travel in groups. We do so many things as a group that we wouldn’t do as individ-uals.

Take a look at practice. We all show up together regularly without ques-tion. Look at how many of us go to workout on our own when our normal practice gets pre-empted. Barely any-one. And those that show are very unmotivated to swim even a full hour. Lane mates and team workouts are a

great thing.

Swim meets are the same way. I’m not necessarily compelled to compete at meets, but because I know that my friends who I work out with every day will be there, I wouldn’t miss the chance to be there, to cheer for them and to know they are cheering for me. It just feels great to do something to-gether. Shared experience. Champs is the perfect meet for some-one who has not yet competed in a meet. It is a big event which makes the pace of the meet reasonable. Some smaller meets seem like you are racing an event every 10 minutes. Al-so, there are a lot of new people that make Champs their first meet, so you have a lot of company. Two year ago

once you pass by the clot of restau-rants and stores, there it is: the pool with its signature wave-shaped roof. At first glance, the building seems a bit squashed , as though it somehow developed a slow leak since 2012, but then I realize I’m standing one level up from the entrance. Once down the stairs and around through front door, the impression is more of a stately art gallery or museum, with towering alabaster walls and a vault-ed ceiling. These days, there is al-most a hushed atmosphere about the place, far removed from the bus-tling chaos that was the Olympics. Surprisingly, the admission fee £5 ($7.50 US) was lower than any other London pool I investigated. Of course, adding in the subway fare, it’s a wash, but then this isn’t just any venue, either. Even the entrance to the women’s locker room impresses. As I meander through the maze to find the chang-ing area, I finally catch partial sight of another swimmer, blasting her curls with one of the complimentary hair dryers. My first reaction: wow, talk about amenities. My second reaction: Oh my, that is one hairy leg.

Then it hits me. Yikes. In my state of utter awe and wonderment, have I unwittingly walked into the wrong locker room? Then I remember: swimming pools in the UK have shared locker room facilities— or “Changing Villages” as they’re known-- featuring private cubicles with sev-en-foot doors, although the commu-nal aspect is usually much more ap-parent from the start. Getting over my initial panic, I am relieved not to have inadvertently done anything to cause an interna-tional incident. Once suited up and with locker key bracelet attached, it’s off to the pool. Immediately, I spot an empty lane right next to the memorial Michael Phleps-Missy Franklin-Ryan Lochte gold medal lane. That fast lane al-ready has about three amateurs cir-cle swimming, which is just as well, since it would be a bit presumptuous of me to even consider joining them. However, having a lane all to myself is short-lived, since two male swim-mers soon hop in and start doing—what else do these Brits traditionally swim?—the breast stroke, in this case a slow-motion breast stroke. So slow, I keep lapping them in a 50 me-ter pool. It soon becomes obvious I will either have to move or get more frustrated, since my lane mates also have a tendency to loiter at the walls and then push off right as I am doing

“Oh my, that is

one hairy leg.”

Focus on the details: strong breakouts from the wall; not breath-ing the first stroke off the wall, accel-erate in and out of the turns. Ask questions about any stroke rules you may have BEFORE the meet.

Sleep. Sleep. Sleep! Get plenty of sleep. Read the following sleep study on the impact of athletic perfor-mance and getting enough sleep: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releas-es/2008/06/080609071106.htm See you at the meet.

my flip turns. Luckily, by this time, the venerated gold medal lane is less crowded, so I quickly duck under the lane line and resume my freestyle stroke, pleased to discover I have no problem keep-ing the pace and am actually gaining on the remaining swimmer. In fact, at that precise moment, I have achieved what much greater athletes have done before me: becoming the fastest human in the pool. Timing, of course, being everything. Not until months later, when the Pac-12 crowd comes to our town with Missy Franklin in tow, does another realization occur to me: that for many swimmers, the road to glory has gone through the King County

Aquatic Center. Historical signifi-cance? We have that too, having been the site of the 1990 Goodwill Games. As members of BWAQ, not only can we swim here, this is our home pool. At the same time, that makes our good fortune easy to take for granted, or to elicit annoyance when practices are bumped for those big meets. Instead, it should show us how much others value what we have. Besides, we get to pre-empt everyone else with PNA Champs. I don’t know about you, but if I were a visiting tourist, KCAC would defi-nitely be on my must-see, must-swim list. No furnished hair dryers, perhaps, but free parking and great coaching. You can’t beat it so you might as well swim it. And what better time than Champs? (Hint.Hint.) Hope to see you there!

Over thirteen BWAQ swimmers took part in our Annual POW (Pool Open Water) swim on Sunday afternoon, February 22, 2015 at KCAC. The lane lines were taken out and four buoys were set up in the four corners of the pool to create an oval race course. USA swimmers also swam the course in the morning, and it was a very well attended and successful event. Brook Brayman was the sole repre-sentative for BWAQ at the Anacortes

SCM Masters Meet held on Sunday, January 25, 2015 in Anacortes, WA. Brook Brayman, Gail Stribling Geld, and Kirsten Byers competed at the 2015 Lake Washington Masters Invita-tional meet on Sunday February 22, 2015 at the Juanita Aquatic Center in Kirkland, WA. Brook Brayman and Jean Blackburn attended the SARC Masters Meet on Sunday, March 8, 2015. Old school, no touchpads up in Sequim, WA.

“If you swim at

this meet, you

WILL score points

for the team”

we boasted a roster of 80 swimmers from our team at the meet, with an

unprecedented 30 swimmers from our team that were attending their first meet. Winning isn’t everything as they say, but winning is something. BWAQ has won Champs at least every year that I’ve swum with the team (in 2003),

but last year we were handed our first loss. This motivaties me to want to show up in strong numbers and make a good show of the power of team. We also want to make our coaches proud. Close competition makes every swim meaningful and every point count. If you swim at this meet, you WILL score points for the team.

So I’m looking forward to sharing the Champs weekend with you all. Re-member, misery LOVES company.

swimmers, especially in rough condi-tions, and by protocol they must launch a full search such as today's three-hour endeavor to find me. Oops.” Funny, and also a good idea, Andrew. USCG Sector Puget Sound can be reached at: 206-217-6001.
