APRIL 2018

Death to life. New beginnings and fresh starts. Easter is all about mov-ing forward and not looking back. It’s about a journey toward a new creation, leaving the past behind.

Celebrate the journey to hope with us on Easter Sunday at 9 or 10:30am.

The story does not end with the cross, for Easter points us beyond the tragedy of the cross to the empty tomb. It tells us that there is hope for eternal life, for Christ has conquered evil and death and hell. Yes, there is hope.Billy Graham

The cross tells us that God understands our sin and our suffering, for he took them upon himself in the Person of Jesus Christ. From the cross God declares, “I love you. I know the heartaches and the sorrows and the pain that you feel. But I love you.”Billy Graham

Join us for our new Financial Wellness Workshop Se-ries @ Cornerstone! Over the course of six months, we’ll cover different financial topics. Come to one or

come to all! The workshops are for our members, guests, and the community. They are are fun, FREE, and all materi-als are provided. See the graphic below for information about the next workshop on Thursday, April 5.

Look out Texas, here we come! Last fall, we collected a whole trailer full of supplies to send to Houston to help

with the recovery after Hurricane Harvey. Even though it’s been months since Hurricane Harvey devastated Texas (and Irma hit Florida and Maria hit Puerto Rico), the effects of this storm are still being felt by locals. We feel that we can be part of the healing process and plan to travel to the Houston area this summer to help with clean up, rebuilding and encouragement. This summer we’re sending a team to share hope and light with the people still recovering! If you’d like to go along and haven’t signed up yet, please contact the church office (office@cccduncannon or 717- 834-4641)

Our team is busy raising money to pay for the trip to Houston this summer! Be on the lookout for ways you can help support this great trip. One way to support the mission trip (and the youth group) is at the Yard Sale on April 13 and 14 here at Corner- stone. The yard sale will be open Friday, April 13 from 6:30am–6pm and Saturday, April 14 from 6:30am–2pm. You can help in two ways:

1) Donate items to be sold at the yard sale. Anything from clothing to household items, trinkets you no

longer have room for, or even furniture. (No electronics or large weight equipment, please).

2) Stop by and shop! There

are lots of treasures just waiting for the right owner! The mission trip team will also be selling hot dogs and baked goods for the duration of the yard sale. So even if you don’t find the per- fect treasure, stop by and grab a snack!

Be on the lookout for future fundraisers!

What you leave behind is not what is engraved in stone monuments, but what is woven into the lives of others.

The play’s the thing

Come out and support our own Lauren Maggs in her Perry County acting debut in

the New Bloomfield Lions Community Theatre production of Urinetown! The play will be performed at West Perry High School in Elliottsburg on Thurs-day and Friday, April 5 and 6 at 7:30pm, and at 2pm and 7:30pm on Saturday, April 7. Tickets are available online at www.nblions.org and at the door prior to each perfor-mance, or at the Blain Library, the Bloomfield Pharmacy, or the Perry County Council of the Arts in Newport. Adult tickets are $14; student tickets are $7.

Here’s what Lauren has to say about the play: “Understandably, you may be on the fence about purchasing tickets for a show with the word “Urine” in the title, so I hope to “flush” some of your concerns!

“While on vacation in Europe, one of the writers had to use a pay toilet, and he was inspired to write Urinetown ‘the musical.’ Urinetown ‘the place’ shows up in Act II … sort of. In fact, the entire musical opens with Officer Lockstock explaining this. He and Little Sally have a very funny exchange about what a terrible title it is and how bad the subject matter is. I won’t spoil it by explaining exactly what Urinetown is, though. You’ll have to come to the show to find out!

“When Urinetown opened on Broadway in 2002, it was nominated for 10 Tony Awards, including Best Musical. It won for Best Book (basically Best Script), Best Original Score, and Best Director. This year, holding close to its goal to bring quality theater to Perry County, the Lions Club decided to take a big step and chose a more modern show instead of performing one of its previous shows. Urinetown has a love story, conflict, singing, dancing, and bunnies (but you don’t want to be the bunny!).

“As far as being appropriate for kids, with a title like Urinetown, you gotta expect some pee and poo jokes. One of the first songs is called It’s a Privilege to Pee. However, the entire show could run on Sunday night TV after America’s Funniest Home Videos without being edited for television. There are some lines with double meanings (back to those pee and poo jokes). There is the occa-sional ‘hell,’ and It’s a Privilege to Pee does drop the word ‘piss’ a couple of times. Heck, the recent high school production of Grease was more risqué than Urinetown. Embrace your inner child (and your real child!) and laugh. The cast won’t judge you; laughter is like currency to us. We’ve been laughing at the lines since January.

“I hope this answers any questions you may have! The cast would love the sup-port of ‘the arts’ in our very own Perry County, and I personally would love the support of my church family.”

Nursery and Toddler rooms

We LOVE our Cornerstone Kids! The MEADOW is a great environment for babies to learn and grow through play, stories, and music. Our toddlers

enjoy learning new songs and Bible stories through interac-tive lessons in the FROG POND! We encourage parents to check out the rooms and let their kids explore these fun areas, both for babies and toddlers and through elemen-tary school at Camp Cornerstone.

If you’d like to volunteer with our kids, we can ALWAYS use more loving adults to care for our kids! Contact Megan Safko ([email protected]) or call the church office (834-4641) for information!

Connecting is a

Cornerstone uses a software system called “Breeze” to help manage all of the new and familiar faces, events, and teams. If you have not yet set up

your Breeze profile, it can help you stay connected to vol-unteer schedules, events, and leaders. (Note: Breeze is not a social media platform so you cannot “meet” new people at Cornerstone. Rather, we encourage you to get involved in a Connect group or ministry team to get to know some new folks in the Cornerstone family.) Visit cccduncannon.breezechms.com to get a user name. If you have any trouble or if you have any questions about Breeze or contacting someone at the church, you can always ask us at the office!

Ready to go “All In”?

Through the last series, Dave has been challenging us to go “all-in” with our heart, mind, strength, resources, and our time through service. If you’re

looking for a way to get connected at Cornerstone and serve in a ministry team or host a group, check out the “forest of opportunities” in the church lobby. The large pallet trees near the Welcome Table are filled with cards each holding an opportunity to serve and get connected at Cornerstone. Take a card (or more!), pray about it, then contact the appropriate person listed on the card to learn more or get plugged in. (*Note—if you are already serving, you do not need to take a card for that area).

Fundamental multiplication

Did you know that some employers have a com-munity giving program? This program usually requires that an employee complete paperwork

and volunteer his/her time to a specific program, and if your program is chosen, the company will donate. Does your employer do this? Two local employers that offer this kind of program are Highmark and Geisinger. (Remember that all employers have different requirements.) If you are going on the mission trip this summer or are planning on participating in one or both Work Camp weekends, simply check with your Human Resources person or employer website and see if this is offered. It’s a great way to multi-ply your generosity!

Don’t be impressed by money, flowers, degrees, and titles. Be impressed by kindness, integrity, humility, and generosity.

There is something that happens when you are grateful: You con-tinue to receive blessings. So I will always be grateful.Chrissy Metz

GOD’S GOT IT“God’s got it.” This is not just a cute catch-phrase, but an actual way to habitually remember that there is a King in Heaven who holds all things together—even when life stings. When worry. When cancer. When inadequacy. When pain. When drought. When storm. That’s when He’s got it. Always. We repeat it to ourselves, on the bad crop years, and when the diagnoses come, and when we’ve gathered in hospice rooms, and over hospital beds, and in ugly days of wild uncertainty. It’s true: What we say to ourselves, and to one another, can determine whether we will live imprisoned or free.Because dark days will come. In this world we will have trouble, but what did Jesus say? “Take heart, for I have overcome the world.”So we tell it to each other, over and over again: God’s got it.It’s why we return to the table of grace with the cup and the loaf. “Do this in remembrance of me.” We return and remember and receive and repent and repeat. God’s got it. He has actually and miraculously overcome the world. We believe this …• that Jesus was born of the Holy Spirit, that He came to

Earth, and that He died on a cross, and that when Satan was laughing and the disciples were running scared, God actually and miraculously still had it.

• that Jesus was wrapped in a cloth and buried in a tomb, and a stone was rolled into place. And when His followers grieved and saw nothing but darkness, God still had it.

• that on the third day, in opposition to the laws of nature, Jesus rose from the dead, and ascended into heaven. Because—please hear this—God most assuredly had it.

• And we believe that our King is seated at the right hand of the Father, because it’s true: Our God has still completely and mercifully “got it.”

Even in the middle of our worst days.We may watch a bad situation turn into an impossible situa-tion. Some of it will defy logic. From time to time, God will let us in on the reasons why.And other times? He won’t. But He is still our Lord, because He already sent a Savior. It’s as true today as it was more than 2,000 years ago on Calvary: Our God who had it then, has got it now, and forevermore shall have it. And even when you don’t get it, God has still got it.

Sin is the second most powerful force in the universe, for it sent Jesus to the cross. Only one force is greater—the love of God.Billy Graham
