OLD GERMAN BAPTIST BRTHR: MIGRATION PATTERNS

October 17, 1988

In the early years, settlement of the Brethren in the eastern portions of the

United States, is very ably told by the various Brethren historians. Included in this sto

are ancestors of the Old German Baptist Brethren along with family progenitors of all

Brethren groups.

While this portion of writing deals directly with genealogical interests and

pursuits of Old Order families - we will begin by offering a bit of general information.

As Brethren began coming to Germantown, Pennsylvania in 1719 & 179, ever pushing

westward to new frontiers, the migration never really stopped until they reached the

west coast many decades later.

Maryland & Virginia began to be settled before the Revolution and just prior to

1800, members were found as far west as Kentucky, Ohio and even Missouri. Through the

Pittsburgh and Ohio River gateways, most of the remaining states were settled. Railroads

also played a significant role in colonizing the western states.

Our attention will now center around migration patterns and family names of brethren

in the Old German Baptist Brotherhood. After Kansas, Iowa and Nebraska were settled,

cheap land and new frontiers continued to lure the Lrethren westward as the twentieth

century approached.

Old Order Brethren first landed in California in 1885 having migrated mostly from

Kansas, Wyoming & Oregon. Early families were; Gish, Brubaker, Garber, Flory, West,

Bauman, Kessler, Wagoner, Cover & Rumble. Small settlements had existed in Wyoming and

Oregon a few years previous but were discontinued soon after 1900. Oregon revived in

the 1960's in the Dallas area with the arrival of the Davidson & Swearingen families.

Several states had at one time attracted Old Order Brethren homesteaders who re-

mained a few years then removed to other areas because of isolated conditions, drought,

etc. Included in the above are, Colorado, Wyoming, Iowa, North Dakota & Wisconsin.

In most cases these families either returned to where they came from (usually Indiana

& Kansas) or continued westward to California.

(2)

In recent years, Brethren have moved to the states of Washington and Mississippi.

Some family names for Washington are: Gish, Young, Bauman & Brubaker - mostly from Modestc

California. More Brethren from California are contemplating this move. Mississippi

families consist of: Beery, Long, Bowser, Neff & Garber. These members settled there

in the 1970's - all having originally come from Southern Ohio.

Elder George Long was one of the first Brethren ministersin Michigan - identitying

with the OGBB in 1883. In the next few decades more families arrived - mainly from

Ohio and Indiana including: Neffs, Brovonts, Millers, Cables, Metzgers, Balsbaughs,

Covers, etc. But, time has taken its toll as most descendants of these families identi-

fying with the church no longer live in Mighigan. The present area of concentration

centers around Scottvlllo in Mason County with younger members of non-Brethren background.

We have not as yet considered OGEB migration to Florida The very first family

to settle in this state occurred in 1911 when Elder Solomon Flora & family moved to the

Homestead area. Within two years (1913) he passed away but family members remained

awhile longer before returning to Indiana. In about 1922, Harley and Jesse Knaus from

Knob Noster, Missouri, also came to Homestead as young men. Then, about two years later,

Elder Wilson Wilt moved from Blackstone, Virginia to near Lakeland. The Knaus brothers

remained for a number of years then returned to Missouri, but family members have perm-

anently located at Homestead. Additional Brethren names in this state are: Boone, Ski1es

Cook, Monler, Graybill and Kinzie.

One last area of more recent migration will be mentioned. Georgia! Two younger

deacon brethren and their families (Eller & Lynch) moved from the West coast to the

Cleveland, Georgia area. At this time it is too soon to evaluate the move in terms of

a permanent settlement.

Dear Lowell -

We have "finally" finished the genealogical

project and am allowing you a copy for all the

assistance you offered. Without you and Gladys

I would still be scratching my head - trying to

find information!.

We know- there are some mistakes in this work

but we had to some degree use what others sent

to us. Wasn't always sure if all the books listed

had OGEE family lines included.

Thanks again for your help!.

Dear Lowell -

Well - how are you and yours these days? Ruby & I are fine. We just returned from spending a few days in Northeastern Ohio with her mother and family. About two years ago she moved from Stark Couty to the adjoining county westward - Wayne - near Wooster. Two of Ruby's sisters and a brother live nearby. There are no longer members in Stark County with the possible exception of Archie Mohler who may be there a couple months in the summer. His membership is at Lakeland, Fla

One month ago - Carolyn T. Denlinger (Brethren Fellowship Newsletter Editor) phone asking if I would "coordinate" genealogical information for her in preparation for an article-forthcoming in Brethren Life & Thought - special issue - she says. Well - I consented to try but when she sent confirmation by letter her request sounded much more difficult. Anyway - I am forwarding a copy of her letter.

If you cold assist me with paragraphs (1) & (2) on information concerning the West Coast - I wold appreciate it very much. Also - what

n about paragraph (4)? Do you wish to add anythng on this or should I just use your "Uncle Jake & Aunt Mary" book? I would also appreciate any hints on how to atta ck this project.

(went) Didn't most of the brethren who originally to North Dakota leave

from Indiana? They went from Kansas to Wyoming - not sure about Nebraska.

I am also going to contact Rosa Yoder in Indiana for information on Indiana. Is there anyone in Kansas who is interested in genealogy? There is a Brunk sister in Va. - probably a cousin to Doris.

Know your very busy - but - if you have a minute - drop me a note and discuss this.

Thanks a bunch!

Love,

Dear Gerald:

Thanks so much for agreeing to coordinate an article on German Baptist genealogical history for the special issue of Brethren Life & Thought, per our telephone conversation this afternoon.

Here's what I have in mind:

A list of your people all over the country who are willing and capable of assisting genealogists and the names they are researching or are experts on.

A list of books already published and where they may be found or purchased.

A plug for Old Order Notes - its history, contents, genealogical data (has this been catalogued or in-dexed at all?)

Perhaps: a short history of German Baptist migra-tion patterns and the families involved. For example, when did they first go to California? Hasn't Lowell Beachier written about this?

Any other pertinent data which woudi help the gen-ealogist - experienced or beginning - who we hope will be reading this issue. Or someone may be in-spired to start their family research!

I'd like to have at least 12-14 double-spaced typed pages by November 1, or Nov. .15th AT THE LATEST.

Just call if you have any other questions. I'm very much -op - r, to new ideas, too. (278-3318) Thanks again.

Sincerely,

/7 -
