4 TEST METHOD
All pressure piping shall in general be hydrostatically tested. The only exception
allowed is flare, CO2 systems with pneumatic test, plant utility piping (such as
instrument air, plant air, nitrogen, cooling water, service water, potable water, A/G fire
water spray system) with service test and piping open to atmosphere (U/G drainage
system connected to manhole) with visual test. The type of test and minimum required
test pressure shall be indicated on the line list.
4.1 Visual Examination (VISUAL)
Atmospheric vents, engine air intakes and atmospheric exhaust systems, and pipes
downstream of drain valves, or traps, running to open collection points, or to atmosphere.
All (100%) of welds shall be visual examined for 100% of their length and acceptable to
ASME B31.1 or B31.3 standard by a qualified welding inspector.
4.2 Service Test (SERV.)
This test is applicable only to piping in Category D Fluid Service such as instrument air,

If the test pressure as calculated above would produce a stress in excess of 90% of the
yield strength at test temperature, the test pressure shall be reduced to the maximum
pressure that will not exceed 90% of the yield strength at test temperature.
After hydrostatic testing, lines shall be thoroughly dried especially for diesel fuel, fuel gas
and lubricating oil lines.
4.4 Pneumatic Test
Pneumatic testing shall be limited to flare systems and dust vent systems. The
minimum pneumatic test pressure shall be 110% of the design pressure.
