The Church of Saint Roch, Oxford, MA PENTECOST SUNDAY June 4, 2017

My dear Parishioners, The front cover of our bulletin this week features some young people that St. Roch’s can be truly proud of, this year’s class of confirmandi! Now in our expanded two year program I have come to know and admire these extraordinary young men and women. Through the anointing and imposition of hands Bishop McManus has called down a fuller empowerment of the Holy Spirit upon them. We pray that they will truly be welcoming of the guidance and direction that the Holy Spirit wants to give to their lives. May they have the courage to testify to their faith in Jesus and answer the Lord’s call. This Sunday we observe the Feast of Pentecost; remembering when the Holy Spirit was first given to that original, small community of believers who were gathered in the Upper Room in Jerusalem. Even after being with the risen Lord they were still timid and uncertain. Once the Spirit entered their hearts and souls they were transformed. Bold and confident Peter and the Apostles went to the ends of the earth knowing that what they had to share was essential for the happiness and welfare of all people. Are we similarly convinced that being in right relationship with God the Father through Jesus will answer the deepest longings of humanity? These days of late May and early June are also filled with celebrations of achievement and new beginnings. Many are graduating from high school and college. After much discipline, sacrifice and effort men and women are setting out to use their education and talent to fashion the future. Hopefully they too will be guided by the Holy Spirit to use the gifts they have to not only provide for themselves but also to help make a better world. I believe that one of the unmistakable signs of the Holy Spirit really being in a person is generosity. By this I mean a willingness to let what we have been given to flow easily through us to others and where it is needed. On a recent pilgrimage to the Holy Land it was pointed out to me that there are two bodies of water that are part of the Jordan River. One receives the river water and allows it to flow through; it is called the Sea of Galilee. Peter, Andrew, James and John made a living fishing in this sea. The other body of water is called the Dead Sea. It receives the water but does not let any out. As a result the chemical deposits have made it inhospitable to life; there is no fish or any vegetation along its shores. May the Holy Spirit inspire the faithful of St. Roch’s to be generous. May our newly confirmed be generous in answering the Lord’s plans for their beautiful lives. May our graduates be generous in using their knowledge and skills to not only enrich themselves but ease the burden of others.

Let us continue to love one another,

Fr. Roy

SEVEN MONTH DEVELOPING BABY

You’re in the home stretch with your spiritually adopted baby. He is completely formed and has been since 8 weeks. All he is doing now is gain-

ing weight—and making his mother uncomfortable with his size. But she’s not worried now. In a short time, her baby will be born. She has planned to bring him home or to place him for adoption. Either way, she knows she can re-ceive the assistance she needs from Catholic Social Ser-vices. Your baby’s mother appreciates the prayers you have said for her and her baby throughout the pregnancy. It hasn’t been easy, but your prayers have given her the grace to seek the help she needs.

The bottles will be collected on Father’s Day weekend.
