Overview

Sustainability as one of today's hot topics is the key issue in the CEMS Block Seminar offered by the

Cologne WiSo Faculty: "Sustainability in Management: Applications to Logistics and Tourism."

The Cologne CEMS Block Seminar is taught by an interdisciplinary team and supported by business

representatives. The seminar offers a well-balanced mix of theory and case studies with a focus on tourism

and logistics.

The Block Seminar hosted by the Cologne WiSo Faculty takes place between September 28th and October

2nd, 2014 in the medieval town Oberwesel. Oberwesel is located in the lovely Upper Middle Rhine Valley,

UNESCO world heritage area and one of Germany's major tourist attractions, making the programme a

really enjoyable and valuable experience.

Please find in this guide the schedule for the Block Seminar offered by the University of Cologne as well as

some useful information about your stay in Oberwesel.

Scopeandlearningobjectives

Nowadays environmental and social issues, such as climate change, ressource scarcity or protection of

human rights, have become key challenges in many industries, impacting on several managerial

dimensions, from strategy to operations. Sustainability is providing new constraints to business, since

governments and NGOs are imposing new regulations on pollution and are requiring higher standards

with regard to labour conditions or respect of local communities. At the same time, sustainability opens

new opportunities to companies, such as developing new market segments, increasing ressource

efficiency, or improving legitimacy and reputation.

The Block Seminair intends to familiarise graduate students with these challenges, focusing in particular

on the topics of sustainability management in the tourism sector, and on logistics and supply chain

management. Tourism is a rapidly growing industry and a major source of income for many countries,

firms and local economies. But tourism is also generating multiple problems like degradation of

environmental ressources, social dislocation, or loss of cultural heritage. An emerging trend in this

industry is to develop more responsible alternatives, termed sustainable tourism (or ecotourism), that

can provide people with exciting vacations, but respect environmental and social concerns. The second

topic addressed in the seminar is logistics. Globalization and economic growth are making the transport

of people and goods a critical factor of pressure on natural ressources and on society. At the same time,

globalized supply chains are asking for more transparent sourcing systems, and sustainable and

environmentally efficient approaches to manage the shipment of goods.

The seminar aims at equipping students with knowledge and skills required to address these new

challenges. The main learning objectives are:

Understanding the complexity of the sustainability challenges

Understanding the interdependences between the economic, ecological and social dimensions

of business

Learning the specificities of the sustainability challenges related to tourism

Understanding the multiple relations between logistics, supply chain management and

sustainability

Exploring specific cases such as sustainability and transport, city logistics and shipment of

goods

Acquiring basic knowledge on the main tools to manage environmental risk and sustainability

issues

Providing an exposure to practical cases and presentations by leading companies and NGOs in

this area.

2. Case Study

COMPULSORY preparatory questions for the study case “Kimpton Hotels”:

1) Explore whether there is a ‘business case’ for Kimpton’s environmental sustainability initiative, its

EarthCare program:

(a) What are the costs and benefits associated with the EarthCare program?

(b) Based on these costs and benefits, how might you justify the program to investors?

(c) Is it necessary for there to be a ‘business case’ to justify implementation of the EarthCare

program?

2) In your opinion, does Kimpton’s EarthCare program involve any potential risks to their business

model? For example, could the eco-initiative adversely affect customer perceptions, general

manager autonomy or costs?

3) To what extent does the EarthCare program have marketing value? Would you actively promote

the program? If so, how? If EarthCare lost its marketing value would you continue it?

4) How would you measure the success of the EarthCare program?

5) Would you require each potential product to stand on its own, meeting the criteria that it cost no

more than existing products? Or should the greening program be treated as a whole, with some

products allowed to exceed existing costs as long as the entire program is “cost-neutral.” What are

some advantages or disadvantages of each approach?

6) How would you “institutionalize” eco-initiatives such as this one? If Michael Pace or other key

personnel leave Kimpton’s or are unable to devote their time and enthusiasm, would the program

continue? How could the company keep it from eventually losing steam?

Please make sure to read the text related to the study case and to prepare the questions

below before attending the class on Wednesday 1st October.
