What did the 1980s mean formovies? The answer wouldinclude prestigious titles like REDS,CHARIOTS OF FIRE, GANDHI andOUT OF AFRICA—Oscar winnersall. But some of the most influen-tial films of the 1980s came fromsemi-disreputable teen genres likehorror films, music films, and thatsignature genre of the 1980s, sexcomedies, where many futurestars made their earliest appear-ances. Up from the underground

came the American independentfilm movement, and with it newperspectives on film and filmmak-ing, while the major studios dis-covered that a flop on releasecould be reborn as a cult classicin the new frontiers of cable TVand home video. This diverse selection of filmsattempts to capture the zeitgeist ofthat era, one that seems in someways distant, in others like itnever really went away.

Pop chanteuse Cléo, awaiting the results of a medicalexamination and convinced she is going to die, spendstwo hours wandering the streets of Paris, her moodswinging from melancholic to merry as she is strangelyenlivened by her existential quandary. Agnès Varda’sgroundbreaking 1962 film is very much in the van-guard of the French Nouvelle Vague: shrewd, sparklingand playfully subversive of cinematic conventions.Look for cameos by New Wave mainstays Jean-LucGodard, Anna Karina and Michel Legrand.
