COMMENTS We’d love to hear from you. Please share your article ideas, comments, questions, or concerns at [email protected].
As aging industry professionals, we have an overabundance of information available to us. However, let’s face it…how much of that in-
formation helps us do our job better? A recent article in the American Society on Aging newspaper, Aging Today, discusses how the coverage of aging in news-rooms and magazines is waning while simultaneously the hunger for news about aging is growing.
As a CSA Editorial Board member, I am proud to be among those feeding that hunger through our work on the CSA Journal. We strive to bring you infor-mation that will enable you to serve your older adult clients better. In this issue of the CSA Journal, you will find articles across a broad array of topics to enhance your understanding of the issues facing older adults and their families, accompanied by approaches to inte-grate these concepts into your professional career.
From the financial perspective, Cindy Eisenhower discusses opportunities in the long term care insur-ance industry, including the growth of hybrid insur-ance policies. Thomas Eyssell and L. Douglas Smith highlight the importance of older adults maintaining accurate credit files with a summary of their recent study, a timely topic in light of the recent Equifax data breach. Peter Lichtenberg and Debra Peck from Wayne State University share their verified new tool, the Lichtenberg Financial Decision Screening Scale, which helps professionals address the ability of older clients to make informed financial decisions.
Rosemarie Rosetti shares her highly personal story about a paralyzing accident that led to a lifetime focus on the value of disability insurance. Her inspirational advocacy is illuminated in her statement, “As it turned out, my helmet was as valuable to me in saving my life as my disability insurance policy was in preserving my financial stability.”
Our nation currently spends $3.2 trillion annually on medical care, and chronic disease accounts for 86 percent of the nation’s healthcare spending. Facing
such daunting numbers, how do individuals plan for these growing medical expenses as they age? Mindy Jones evaluates how much to set aside for medical ex-penses in retirement and how to determine the odds you will need long term care.
Planning, resilience and positive aging are other major topics in Journal 71. In a two-part series, Kay Van Norman explains how families share a culture that influences aging trajectories and shape health and aging outcomes. Her definition of how the individual and family share goals to promote positive resilience as we age should be a core value in our work. Sarah Gilbert introduces the four domains of preparing for aging: Personal, Medical, Legal and Financial. Con-nie Corley and Theresa Southam clarify how positive aging can be implemented by adopting the Foray (4A) paradigm of Awareness, Attitude, Affiliation and Activity. Their article pairs with Katlyn Clifton’s insightful piece to introduce the concepts of “gero-transcendence” and “intentional aging” to engender a more successful journey throughout old age.
Finally, in the Case In Point, nationally respected leader on life planning Amy D’Aprix shares methods for facilitating and implementing “essential conversa-tions” to shepherd your clients through life transitions.
I continue to be impressed with the quality of our authors. These perceptive individuals come from a multitude of professional backgrounds, most with advanced degrees and years of experi-ence. As few publications are reporting older adult issues beyond the doomsday defaults of illness and socioeconomic burden, I believe the CSA Journal continues to stand out as a positive com-prehensive resource advancing the methods and practices of professionals dealing with aging clients.
