Holy Week Worship

Palm Sunday Festival Communion

April 9th Children are invited to join us outside the Narthex 8:00, 9:15 &10:45 a.m. before the start of the 9:15 & 10:45 services to receive

a palm. They will enter the service as a group, waving the palms in anticipation of Jesus’ arrival. The children will then be dismissed from the service to attend a special presentation of the Jerusalem Journey with their Sunday School classes. The KOG Community is also invited to attend the Jerusalem Journey between services at 9:30, 10:20, and 11:00 in the KOG Center.

Pastor Paul's Pennings Hope is Alive

So, friends, I’m assuming you all have been reading the headlines, right? 

Oh, no no no. Not those headlines.  

The one I’m reading says, “Jesus is risen! Alleluia!”  

And you have GOT to keep reading – did you see this one? – “So now there is no condemna on for those who belong to Christ Jesus! And because you belong to him, the power of the life‐giving Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death!” (Romans 8). So much good news! Oh, man, was I thirsty for that.  

Does anyone else come away from na onal or world news – or some mes pain and problems in your personal life – feeling parched like a July day in Phoenix? As Psalm 63:1 says, “My soul thirsts for You, my flesh yearns for You in a dry and weary land where there is no water.” On days when we fall into the trap of spending more  me reading the world’s headlines than spending  me in the Word and in prayer and worship, we can find the darkness of despair creeping into our minds. Some mes it’s even on our lips. It’s clear that what is foremost on our minds is evidence of where our hearts are abiding. As Jesus says in Ma hew 6:22‐23, “The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!” What are you medita ng on? What is in your mind’s eye? 

Signs of resurrec on and blessing and hope are all over, if we are looking with God’s eyes. Is there darkness? Is there pain? Yes. But we are Easter People living in assurance of God’s grace and mercy and power. Jesus said in John 16:33, before his death: “I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribula on. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” His power is great and his plan is good! Through Jesus’ death and resurrec on, God has done something we never could do on our own, bringing our faith to life, as KOG’s mo o reminds us. Life abundant and life eternal – what be er news could there be? 

And amazingly, we are invited and called to par cipate in the resurrec on by sharing the life and hope. When we respond in faith to do the work God has set before us, the work of prayer, of evan-gelism and of loving our neighbors, we bring that life and blessing and hope to our families, com‐muni es, and the world. When we par cipate in the resurrec on by pu ng our energy into God’s work of transforma on, peace, and jus ce, we see God’s blessings and power mul ply. Overall, as we bring faith into our lives, the Holy Spirit sanc fies and bears fruit in our lives, and God’s power extends through our whole beings and into our world. 

His light becomes both more necessary and more clear, the darker life gets. 

“The darker the night, the brighter the stars/ The deeper the grief, the closer is God!” wrote Fyodor  Dostoevsky in Crime and Punishment. It was in the darkness of despair that Jesus’ disciples watched him suffer and die. They thought their hope had been crucified with him. But in that ul mate dark‐ness, our big, strong God was there, accomplishing his great plan for his glory and for our good.                          

I pray that this Easter season, you will take the  me to read and remember the Headlines that ma er, and fill your eyes with the light. I pray that day by day in your personal  me with God, and week by week together as a church community, our faith life will grow stronger and stronger. And I pray for our church that the Spirit leads us to do good deeds in the name of Jesus, so that all people will be moved to give God glory, and share in His promise of eternal life!

Health and Wellness  Wellness Moment: Blood Pressure  

  Blood pressure is the force of blood against the wall of arteries. It varies throughout the day, usually  within a safe range. A reading of your blood pressure includes systolic number and diastolic numbers.  Systolic refers to the force of blood against the artery walls as your heart contracts. Diastolic is pressure of your heart between beats. According the American Heart Associa on an adult normal blood pressure should be 120/80 (systolic top number; lower num‐ber is diastolic).  What happens when it is not in the safe range and why should you be concerned?       High blood pressure, known as hypertension, cannot be cured but it can be managed. There are no signs or symptoms of high blood pressure which presents a danger and not being treated in the early stages.  Le  unchecked hypertension increases the risk of a  person having a heart a ack or a stroke. Managing hypertension involves working with your healthcare provider and, o en, changing some of your lifestyle habits.     Hypertension places stress throughout the body. If le  unchecked, a person can develop kidney disease, heart disease, enlarged heart, vision problems, and peripheral artery disease.      One high reading does not lead to a diagnosis of  hypertension; it does alert your physician to be watchful. With that watchful a tude your healthcare provider may ask you to take your blood pressure with a home blood pressure monitor, record the readings with the  me of day and ac vity. On your next visit bring the list of your readings; these help your provider gauge your blood pressure outside the office and what treatment might need to be tweaked!     Lifestyle treatment plans include: making dietary changes, less fat and sodium and more fruits, whole grains and vegetables; increasing ac vity level to 30 minutes a day of walking, taking the stairs instead of elevators, yoga; maintaining a healthy weight, even a loss of 5‐10% of your weight has a good effect on your blood pressure; reducing stress which includes ge ng proper rest and sleep; limi ng or avoiding  alcohol; and avoiding or qui ng tobacco which affects the artery walls.  Enlist your family members, co‐workers, friends to join you on a healthier path toward wellness.     

  If the lifestyle changes alone don’t alter your blood  pressure to healthier readings than medica ons will be recommended.  There are a variety and classifica‐ons of medica ons to treat hypertension.  Not all 

medica ons work the same way in every person. You will need to work together with your healthcare  provider to find the best one for you. For your part, you may be asked to con nue monitoring and record‐ing your blood pressure at home.  Lifestyle changes and medica ons work together to improve your heart health.   Hypertension is a life‐long health condi on that is manageable. Make it your goal of be er health with taking care of yourself as a priority.     

CPR, AED and First Aid Class

This is an opportunity to gain skills that you may need in case of an emergency.   The course is a blended class, a 2 step process.  

1. Take the online course that contains the knowledge and procedures for using CPR, AED and First Aid. Videos are used to support the text.  

2. This part involves prac cing and demon‐stra ng the skills. The class is held on a desig‐nated date at King of Glory.   

The online part of the course must be completed  prior to engaging in the skills class.  Upcoming date for skills is Saturday, April 1, 8 to 11 am.  In order to complete the online program, registra on is required by March 21. You will receive an email that contains the website to begin and complete the online por on of the course.  Register, with $25 (required before online infor‐ma on is given), at the Welcome Center by March 21. At the comple on of both the online and skills classes you will receive a cer fica on card and access to a digital course book.    Contact Karen Hernandez,  Director of Health Ministries, karenh@kogaz.org, or 480‐838‐0477.

Meet Melissa Lindberg...Youth Minister Gree ngs King of Glory Friends, 

I would like to take a moment and introduce myself as the new Youth Minister here at King of Glory!   For the past 16 years my work and ministry history have been intermingled as I served at various churches and Chris an businesses.  The posi ons I favored the most included serving as the Marke ng Director at a Chick‐fil‐A in Gilbert, and more recently as a mentor for young teenage mothers through East Valley YoungLives. I live in the East Valley with my 12 year old daughter, 2 dogs, and a bearded dragon named ‘Li le’ who is not so li le at all!  My idea of a good  me is hanging out with kids, youth, and young adults… and laughing as much as possible. 

It is with absolute certainty that I know God has placed me here in your midst at this  me and season.  As a guest here for the past month I have taken every opportunity to meet and greet this  wonderful community of believers in Christ.   It is clear that there is a need for a solid Youth Ministry here at King of Glory, and I am so  excited to be a part of building this new venture with you all.  Please commit to pray with me that the Lords’ will be done as we reach out to disciple the next genera on of  believers in Christ.   In Him,

Youth Cook-Off, Sunday, March 19th, 5pm in the kitchen.  All 7‐12th graders are invited to join us as we enjoy some good‐spirited compe on in the kitchen as well as ge ng to know each other be er.  There’s no cost and friends are wel‐come, but please signup in the Welcome Center so we know how many people to prepare for. 

 

April 28-30th we’re excited to go to the Phoenix YOUTH QUAKE!  It’s an awesome 2 day retreat at a local hotel with hundreds of youth from all over the state.  There will be bands, a fantas c speaker, and lots of fun, memo‐rable experiences. Cost is $165 if we register before Mar. 28. Registra on will be online soon, but save the date and be thinking about who you want to invite to join you.  Check out www.quakeevent.com for more info.

Vacation Bible School

Children's Ministry

February was a fun month for the KOG Kids!  The children have been learning all about living like Je‐sus, loving one another, and all about their Faith Steps. 

 

Bring Your Bible Challenge!  We want our KOG Kids to know that spending  me in God's Word is important for all of us,  regardless of how old we are.  That's why we created the Bring Your Bible Challenge.  Each  me a child brings their Bible with them to Sunday School they receive a s cker for our challenge chart,  and once we reach 100 s ckers on our chart we will win a special donut celebra on.  The children have been doing such an awesome job remembering to bring their Bibles that we are almost at our goal!  Way to go KOG Kids! 

 

Mother & Infant Lounge in the Welcome Center We've recently added a new space just for our youngest KOG Kids.  The Mother & Infant Lounge is located in the Welcome Center and will be available during most 

Sunday services. The space is designed for mothers that would like to feed or care for their bundle of love in a quiet space, while s ll being part of the Worship Service.

KOG Kids Easter Celebration

The youth  had a magical  me with dashing princes, beau ful princesses, Star Wars and many other  delights  during our quick turnaround trip the week‐end of February 24 ‐26th.   Prior to our departure, the kids hung out in the youth room with Pastor Paul, snacking on pizza and treats, playing video games and watching movies. The kids had so much fun that they have asked to go again!  Drum roll... We WILL be going again in 2018! Preliminary plans are being formulated now. Keep an eye out for an announcement. In the mean me, the youth will be having a Cook Off in the KOG Center on Sunday, March 19th at 5pm. We will be making personal  pizzas and desserts with special ingredients includ‐ing a secret one!   Join us and bring your friends for this evening of food and fellowship!

Holy Yoga

Holy Yoga is the inten onal prac ce of connec ng our en re being, body, mind and spirit with God: the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. With complete reliance on God's Word and prayer, Holy Yoga invites us to  surrender and introduces us to Grace. When we breathe and move and have our being in Christ, we find ourselves in the flow of His magnifi‐cence.  Join us the first and third Thursday of each month for Holy Yoga at KOG!  Cost is $6, payable online or in Welcome Center.  Bring yoga mat or large towel and water.

Bible journaling is an exci ng way to engage with Scripture. It can transform the way you spend  me in the Word and it all begins within the margins of the Bible.  With pen in hand, you can visually capture Scripture, meditate on God's Word and memorize the text. Some choose to journal as an expression of  private devo on, while others journal as an act of worship.  Join us Sunday, March 26 from 1:00‐4:00pm in the Learning Center for KOG's Bible Journaling A ernoon.  Bring your journaling Bible or favorite journal and we'll provide all the crea ve supplies needed to create for your Creator.  Cost is $6, payable online or in the Welcome Center.   Contact Heather Hamilton at heather.h@kogaz.org for more informa on.  

 Our men were retrea ng at the beginning of March, but not to escape life's 

responsibili es, rather to be renewed and equipped to return and be er lead 

by serving in their homes, neighborhoods, workplaces, and church. And of 

course we had a lot of fun along the way. Plans are already underway for 

NEXT year's Men's Retreat, so if you weren't able to a end the weekend we 

hope you'll be able to join us next  me.  

Bible Journaling

MARCH IS FILLED WITH FUN AT KOG PRESCHOOL The prekindergarten children started March by learning about which items sink in water and which items float in water. This is  always a fun science ac vity. Later in the month, they will learn about the Southwest and what it means to live in the desert. The preschool children con nue to learn about the five senses. They also will have fun learning about different fairy tales.  

Everyone will become sports people and par cipate in KOG Preschool’s Annual Olympics at the end of the month. This year, summer games will be organized by the teachers and the children will have fun with so ball, basketball, soccer, gymnas cs and the long jump. They always end their Olympic day with a fun picture of them with their very own gold medal.          It is such a great day! 

PRESCHOOL REGISTRATION NOW OPEN

Registra on for the 2017‐2018 school year is open to all KOG church families and preschool families. KOG  Preschool’s mission is to provide a safe, loving Chris an early childhood experience for each child. Children will learn and grow socially, emo onally, and intellectually with age appropriate ac vi es in an engaging and  hands‐on environment.  This mission is realized every year as many wonderful children and families grow and mature in the preschool. Come join them now in learning and  having fun! There is a variety of half day classes, morning and a ernoon, for children from 3 to 5 years old who are toilet trained. The theme‐based curriculum offers a great array of developmentally appropriate ac vi es and learning experiences for all  children. If you are interested in a tour of the preschool or in enrolling your child or grandchild, please contact Cindy Stark in the Preschool Office any  me Monday through Thursday.  More  informa on about the preschool can be found online at www.kingofglorypreschoolaz.com

Paz de Cristo 2nd Sunday of Each Month 4:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. A big Thank You . . . to those who serve at Paz de Cristo. Every month volunteers from KOG give a few hours of their  me to help at Paz de Cristo, a community‐based organiza on that 

serves meals  to  the homeless. Do  you have a  special group of  friends you meet with  such as a breakfast group, bible study, or movie group?  If so, get together with them and sign up to volunteer for Paz. At least 20 people are needed when volunteering for Paz.  No more than four 12 to 17 year olds. Sign up sheets are located in the Narthex for your convenience, sign up now for April 9th May 14th, June 11th and beyond. Notes from the Office  

CONTRIBUTIONS STATEMENTS FOR 2016 are available For Those Who Request Them.  Forms are at the Welcome Center or the church office.  Please call the church office at 480‐838‐0477 for more informa on.  The church office will be closed for Good Friday, April 14th. We will resume office hours on Monday April 17th.  Easter is fast approaching and what be er way to support our youth and give a gi  that gives twice...every purchase of a gi  card gives back to our youth.  There are cards for restaurants, I‐tunes, grocery stores, clothing stores and much more. There is something for everyone on your Easter basket list, young and the not so young! KOG KA$H is in the narthex every Sunday and the church office during the week. 

HOORAY...it is golf league  me again!!  The season starts March 28th, with tee  mes star ng at 3:30 pm.  We play for 8 weeks at Shalimar Golf Course (NW of KOG about a block).  The cost is $40.00 which  includes 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes plus dinner for you  ($15 addi onal per guest).  There is also an op onal $20.00 fee if you want to join in on our weekly cash prize events.  The green fees are paid directly to Shalimar each week.   

Did you know this league is one of the longest running fellowship groups in the church?  There are two  seasons (spring and fall) that run approximately two months each.  Golf is a great  me to escape from life's pressures, get in that exercise program you have been promising yourself and enjoy some of God's beau ful crea ons all at the same  me.  A er nine holes we gather in the restaurant for some refreshments and  me to reflect on the best shot of the day and discuss how the heck one person could hit all those trees in just one round of golf.  On the last day of each season, we have an awards dinner at the Shalimar Club House – we award some very unusual golf prizes!  Now doesn't that sound fun?   Some of you may think that you are just not "good" enough for this league...WRONG!  This is a fellowship league ‐ you know ‐ for the fun.  Handicaps are established so all scores are compe ve...there is a W‐I‐D‐E range of players in the group.  Now that you do not have any excuses, you should sign up.  You can do that in the welcome center, or you can email Teri Zahara at bruceter46@yahoo.com with your full name, phone number and email address.  Spaces are limited to 24 so don't wait too long.  Hope to see you soon!
