BLESSed Neighbors at Annual National

Night Out Block Party

National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, better places to live.

Several Prince of Peace members hosted or participated in National Night Out, an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, better places to live. National Night Out is recognized on the first Tuesday of August. The goal is to build connections in your neighborhood. A special thanks goes out to our West Springfield Police Department and Fairfax County Sheriff's Department.

Pictured here is Officer Persons & Officer Mohamud from the WSPD and Reserve Deputy Congleten and Deputy Davis from the FCSD.

Here are some comments from those who participated:

"We hosted a National Night Out event in my neighborhood. Officers Reece and Bishop were able to stop by and handout badge stickers and coloring books to the kids. We had about 30 people attend. I had ice cream treats, Popsicles, watermelon, water and lemonade to share. A neighbor brought sidewalk chalk for the younger kids and the older kids played basketball in the driveway. I hosted National Night Out to continue to bring our neighborhood together as we have had some new families move into the neighborhood. I also wanted to keep an open line of communication with our Police station because we have had serious problems in our neighborhood in the past including drug trafficking that required their assistance to resolve. In addition, with all the terrible things happening in the world today in particular regarding with the police, the young kids need to know that they are still people we should go to in our community for help." - Darlene McCoy

(Continued from page 2)

"I've lived in my neighborhood for just 15 months and I didn't really know any of my neighbors. I met more neighbors through attending National Night Out than I have in my entire lifetime through all our army moves! It was a great time! I found out I had a lot in common with many of my neighbors and we're planning follow up activities.” - A grateful neighbor

"Thank you so much for hosting National Night Out. It was so great to meet more neighbors. Thanks for organizing the event and for keeping our family in your prayers." - A grateful neighbor

Even though National Night Out is an annual event, the spirit of the event can be shared throughout the year. Consider hosting a neighborhood night on your driveway or in your cul-de-sac this summer. Bond with your neighbors. Learn and listen to their stories. Engage them on a deeper level. Serve them by meeting a need they have. Share the hope you have in Jesus Christ. BLESS your neighbor this summer!

Town Hall Music Ministry Discussion

Thank you to everyone who is participating in the discussions and decisions regarding our Music Ministry; most recently those who attended the Town Hall Meeting on Sunday. A great many people have voiced their thoughts and feelings before, during and after the Town Hall Meeting. The comments have ranged from highly supportive to very concerned, with most landing somewhere in between. The discussion has "awoken the Spirit within us" and provided the opportunity for us to discuss openly not only the Music Ministry, but the big picture of what the Holy Spirit is doing among us. The Music Ministry Call Committee continues to welcome feedback from all members regarding the current staffing process. Members are: Mike Macrina, Kirk Anderson, Craig Mosford, Jane Leeling, Helen Poe, Julie Eichhorst, Jennie Smith and Pastor Carl.

Have you Read the

En•courage NOVA Blog?

I belong to a missional community and we were asked to take one photo that illustrated shalom. In the interest of full disclosure, my photo is somewhat deceiving. An instant earlier, my granddaughter Hope had darted from the scene. Just two seconds later, the little girl in the picture, my granddaughter Story Jane, was in rapid motion again. Even a Japanese garden is something of an illusion…

Day to Serve

Fairfax County houses of worship are unifying in service this fall for a Day to Serve, September 10 - October 11. The Fairfax County Clergy and Leadership Council and Faith Communities in Action are encouraging faith communities to invite their neighbor houses of worship to join them in a fall 2016 project to serve those in need. Identify a service leader in your faith community to coordinate a project and invite two or more nearby places of worship to join you. Projects can be newly created or one of your annual service activities or another service event already on your calendar. You may choose any date this fall for your service event to take place. Most Day to Serve projects will take place from September 10 through October 11. For more information, please see Fairfax County Day To Serve and daytoserve.org. Once you solidified your project email Fairfax County Community Interfaith Coordination at mailto:[email protected].

Thank you for joining and serving our community!

ECHO Update – August 2016

ECHO and gift cards... not necessarily a match made in heaven. While ECHO can easily and quickly use donated grocery store and gasoline company gift cards, cards from other types of vendors (restaurant, coffee shop, clothing store, internet music providers) are difficult for ECHO to use for the following reason: for both auditing and security purposes, the cards count as cash and it is against ECHO policy to keep more than a modest sum of cash in our building. They tend to collect until we can find the most appropriate ways to use them for client services, thus compromising security in our building. ECHO volunteers are grateful that our community supports the work we do to assist neighbors in need, but we ask that gift card donations be limited to grocery stores or gasoline companies. This month, ECHO needs donations of: Children’s winter coats, boys jeans sizes 6 – 18, towels in good condition, working sewing machines. The ECHO food pantry needs: dried beans, cooking oil, jelly, bags of rice, juice, tissues, shaving cream, toothbrushes, child and/or adult over-the-counter pain medicines. ECHO, at 7205 Old Keene Mill Road, is open to receive donations on weekdays between 9:30 am and 12:30 pm or between 7:00 and 9:00 pm on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday. Receipts are happily provided.

Thank You

Thank you for your prayers, meals, phone calls, and visits. My foot has two more months of healing. - Kathy Phillips

Donate Toys to MOPS August 6-19

Prince of Peace MOPS is seeking toy donations from August 6-19th. Please leave the toys on the counter in Room 24. We are looking for gently-used, newer toys for our classrooms. All toys must be able to be easily cleaned or wiped off. No dress up clothes please. Any toys that are not used for MOPS will either be used in the nursery or donated to ECHO. The following is a list of items we are in need of: Little People® sets, small blocks to medium size trucks or cars, plastic dolls, small to medium plastic toys for ages 1-5 years. We are also in need of one or two shelving units with nine cubes in gently-used, excellent condition. If you have one that you’d like to donate that would be much appreciated. Thank you for all the prayers, donations and effort to everyone for making MOPS successful at Prince of Peace. We’re looking forward to a great year!

Mentor Moms & Greeters Needed for MOPS

MOPS is looking for two more mentor moms to join our MOPS group. A mentor mom listens, provides wisdom and hope to mom’s with

young children in a safe, loving atmosphere. You will be assigned to a table of 5-7 women that you will care for throughtout the MOPS year.

The meetings are from 9:45-11:45 a.m. on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of the month from September-May. We are also looking for 2-4 women

to volunteer 30 minutes twice a month to greet MOPS moms as they enter the church. This would include lending a hand, if needed, to carry

Faith Stories

Sharing your faith story is an integral component in living out your faith. Your individual story makes up the greater story—the story of God’s redeeming His people for Himself. Our stories encourage other believers while God also uses them to reach those not yet connected to Him. “I encountered an older Muslim woman in the lobby of a medical building. She was confused about where to go for her appointment. She needed a brain MRI which explained her confusion. I led her to her doctor's office where she embraced and thanked me for helping her. I felt God set this divine appointment for me and her. I told her ‘God bless you,’ as we parted and also thanked God for this opportunity to help this woman.”

-Amy Poe “Seventeen team members from across the country spent a God-inspired week at Village of Hope teaching hundreds of children skills they do not get during the school year.”

-Tom Lambiase “We thank God that our nephew is here for a D.C. Law School internship.”

-Susan Sweet You can share your stories by writing them in the “Friendship Folder” at any worship service, or post your story as a comment on the popfaithstories.wordpress.com, or by sending an e-mail to [email protected].

The master calendar can be found on our website at poplc.org/calendar. Not receiving the Communicator via email? Please let the office know and we will be happy to
