This short biography of Richard Steven Valenzuela, otherwise known as Ritchie Valens, is based on personal interviews with Ritchie’s sister, Connie Valens, and his girlfriend and first love, Donna L. Ludwig (now, Fox). Other sources include biographies, news articles, the mo-tion picture La Bamba, and various internet sites. It was inspired by Ritchie’s dedication to his family, his perse-verance through trials and his tremendous talent, all of which are part of his amazing legacy.

Foreword In my first conversation with Ryan, I immediately

sensed from him a warmth and sincerity about writing Ritchie’s story. He explained to me why this book was important, and why he was excited about writing it. Ryan didn’t take the research lightly and was heedful as to what it would take to bring Ritchie’s story to a new gener-ation.

Ryan had done his homework, and our interviews challenged me to recollect memories from my childhood that had been hidden away by time and heartache; at times it was necessary to reach out to extended family. Ryan McArthur, has brought to these pages, the pride of the San Fernando Valley; he has given the reader intimate glances into the life of a young man who accomplished so much in such a short time. mucho para satisfacer todas las necesidades del pequeño bebé y de su hermanastro, Bob (Morales). Sus padres tra-bajaban en una fábrica de armas2 y su papá también tra-bajaba en varios ranchos.

La familia Valenzuela vivía en San Fernando, Cali-fornia. Como muchas familias de los años 40, tenían pro-blemas financieros. Eso les causaba mucho estrés. Había muchos conflictos en la casa de los Valenzuela. Los pa-dres discutían3 mucho y cuando Richard tenía tres años y Bob siete, sus padres se divorciaron.

Después del divorcio, el padre de Richard no quería que su hijo viviera con su madre. Insistió en que Richard viviera con él. La madre de Richard se resistió, pero al final, no tuvo otra opción más que aceptar, y Richard se fue a vivir con su padre. Tristemente, Richard no podía pasar mucho tiempo con su mamá ni con su hermanastro ‘Bob’.

Ritchie no quería problemas, así que comenzó a tocar y a cantar. Ritchie cantaba mucho para su padre. A los dos les encantaba la música. Trágicamente, cuando Ritchie tenía diez años, su padre murió por complicacio-nes relacionadas con la diabetes.

Después de la muerte de su padre, Ritchie se fue a vivir con su tío Henry, el hermano de su padre. Su padre estaba convencido de que su madre no podía cuidarlo bien, así que insistió en que Ritchie no viviera con su madre.

Ritchie pasó un año viviendo con su tío, pero no es-taba contento en esa casa. Él quería vivir con su madre. Finalmente, después de un año, se fue a vivir con su madre, su hermanastro Bob y sus hermanitas, Connie e Irma. Ellos vivían en una casa pequeña, pero a Ritchie no le importó.

Pasaba mucho tiempo tocando la guitarra y escu-chando música. La música lo ayudó a pasar momentos difíciles. Ritchie continuó tocando la guitarra. ¡Practicaba mucho! Iba a la escuela y, al regresar a la casa, inmedia-tamente comenzaba practicar.

Al llegar del campamento, Ritchie entró al 7.o grado en Pacoima Junior High. Él llevaba su guitarra a la es-cuela todos los días. La música tenía una presencia cons-tante en su turbulenta vida. Ritchie era, por naturaleza, un chico reservado. Era introvertido, pero cuando tocaba la guitarra, se transformaba en un cantante animado.

En la escuela, Ritchie era un estudiante típico. Le gustaba mucho la clase de Inglés y también las clases de Carpintería y Mecánica. Mientras los otros chicos traba-jaban en carros, Ritchie trabajaba en guitarras. Pintó su guitarra Harmony-Stratotone, la cual tocaba siempre que podía. Un día durante la hora del almuerzo, el director de Pacoima Junior High, Dave Schwartz, caminaba por la escuela. Vio a un grupo grande de estudiantes y escuchó gritos. Inmediatamente pensó que había un problema. «¡Otra pelea4!», pensó y fue rápidamente para separar a los estudiantes. Cuando el director llegó, vio que solo era Ritchie tocando su guitarra.
