MY PHILOSOPHY ON USING TECHNOLOGY

Technology used in the classroom is an integral part of the development of lifelong learning skills.

Technology allows us the opportunity to expand our student’s learning through reaching out into the world around us that we would otherwise not be able to touch.

Technology is not a ends to mean, but a chance at inspiration. Having my students use technology will hopefully inspire them to learn and have fun at school.

My district’s technology plan

VISION STATEMENT By including technology as a part of my teaching, I will

provide students with greater opportunities that will affect their learning, such as; learning by doing, receiving feedback, refining their knowledge, and building new knowledge (Bransford Article).

Technology is a part of my classroom on a daily/weekly basis.

I will use technology to keep pace with the accelerated pace of information in today’s society.

Use technology to create a knowledge/learner centered classroom. Several groups have reviewed the literature on

technology and learning and concluded that it has great potential to enhance student achievement and teacher learning, but only if it is used appropriately (e.g., Cognition and Technology Group at Vanderbilt, 1996; President's Committee of Advisors on Science and Technology, 1997; Dede, 1998) {Bransford Article}.

TECHNOLOGY GOALS FOR MY ROOM

Evaluate benefits of blogging (Fall 2010)

Continue to reinforce learning using CompassLearning games (2010-2011)

Take a virtual tour using the internet (Spring 2010)

Expand on the idea of students blogging to other third grade students (2010-2011)

TECHNOLOGY POTENTIALS Easy to create an environment where the

students are learning by doing, receive feedback, and build on their new knowledge. (Bransford Article; Barron et al, 1998)

Technology can help my students see things in a different light, be given an example that I couldn’t provide, or draw on the board for them.

Collaboration with other students and educators is at the touch a their fingertips (Brophy Article).

Collection of data is much readily available for them (I do however make them do some book research as well-they need to remember that books are important).

Reinforce ideas already taught (Bransford Article). Link parents to their children’s schools. All students the ability to practice their skills

using application activities (Brophy Article). Free websites that offer technology training, for

example: Teacher Training Videos-Russell Stannard

TECHNOLOGY PITFALLS

Always the number one pitfall when bringing in technology, especially a network, is the potential for the technology not to work. Always have a backup plan…around the world with your spelling list is an example of a back up plan.

Technology used for the sake of it being technology is not an appropriate use of technology and can hinder learning. (Bransford Article)

As a district that is laying off four teachers there will not be a great deal of opportunities for professional development using technology. This year we did have four teachers get trained in CompassLearning Odyssey, I was one of them, and they were to train the other teachers. The problem with this is that the other teachers are not up to the challenge of using this technology in their classrooms.

Page 11: C LASSROOM T ECHNOLOGY P LAN I used my district’s plan as a guide to set up my own classroom plan. All * indicate information taken from that plan. Amiee

TECHNOLOGY PITFALLS Lack of professional development can lead to

classrooms with technology but not teachers whom can teach that technology. Teachers need to learn the technology to provide lessons built on high quality instruction (Brabec Article).

Having a lack of funding is also another pitfall to consider in this economy. On the flip side it is very important to be able to know how to find free resources that you will be able to use in the classroom, there are a lot out there.

POTENTIAL TECHNOLOGIES The Internet WebQuest that I created and other WebQuests CompassLearning Odyssey-This is a research

based curriculum software company. It offers individualized and differentiated instruction.

United Streaming-Offers streamed videos through Discovery Education.

Internet4Classrooms-Texas standards based website offering educational games and more.

EduBlog-Free blogging website that is available to teachers and to students.

The possibility of getting some computers in my room. These computers would be hand me downs from the upper levels.

Receiving a Smart Board from a grant that I’m going to write.

REAL WORLD TECHNOLOGIES I will still have the Internet available to me

next year. Compass Learning and United Streaming

were purchased by the ISD and will be available next year.

Educational gaming sites will still be available. If they start to charge to use them then I will find free sites.

If EduBlog decides to charge to use it, then I will find another site to use.

The High School and Middle School are receiving new computers next year and we get their hand downs. I don’t know if we will be able to get any in our classrooms yet.

TECHNOLOGY STANDARDS AND EXPECTATIONS FROM MY DISTRICT THAT I CURRENTLY COVER IN MY ROOM

*Students manage and maintain files on a hard drive or the network-My students complete a research paper on the computers and are expected to save and open them again for later use.

*Students proofread and edit writing using appropriate resources and grade level appropriate checklists both individually and in groups-They use the computer to complete their research paper.

*Students discuss how information and communication technology supports collaboration, productivity, and lifelong learning-This is accomplished through their blog.

Page 15: C LASSROOM T ECHNOLOGY P LAN I used my district’s plan as a guide to set up my own classroom plan. All * indicate information taken from that plan. Amiee

TECHNOLOGY STANDARDS AND EXPECTATIONS FROM MY DISTRICT THAT I CURRENTLY COVER IN MY ROOM

*Students use age-appropriate citing of sources for electronic reports: Students research reports.

*Students identify safety precautions that should be take while on-line: This has been a constant since we started blogging.

*Students use basic telecommunication tools for collaborative projects with other students-blogging.

*Students use Web search engines and built-in search functions of other various resources to locate information-research paper and wax museum research.

Page 16: C LASSROOM T ECHNOLOGY P LAN I used my district’s plan as a guide to set up my own classroom plan. All * indicate information taken from that plan. Amiee

INCREASE TECHNOLOGY WITHIN THE CLASSROOM-BASED ON MY DISTRICTS PLAN: MY FUTURE USE

*Students discuss the accuracy, relevance, appropriateness, and bias of electronic information sources.

*Students discuss scenarios describing acceptable and unacceptable uses of technology and describe consequences of inappropriate use.

*Students discuss basic issues regarding appropriate and inappropriate uses of technology (e.g. copyright)-Use of Copyright lesson.

*Students know how to insert various objects (e.g. photos) into a word document, presentations, or web document-Research paper photographs to be added

Page 17: C LASSROOM T ECHNOLOGY P LAN I used my district’s plan as a guide to set up my own classroom plan. All * indicate information taken from that plan. Amiee

INCREASE TECHNOLOGY WITHIN THE CLASSROOM-BASED ON MY DISTRICTS PLAN: MY FUTURE USE Students will have lessons on internet safety as well as my

copyright lesson.

*Students identify how different forms of media and formats may be used to share similar information, depending on the audience.

Increased use of technology for me will be building on the technology that I have already started to use as well as keeping an eye on problems of practice where technology will be able to be employed to help within the classroom. Inspire Student Learning and Creativity (ISTE Standards).

I plan to continue my education and receive an Endorsement of Educational Technology from MSU in the summer of 2011. My goal is to continue as a classroom teacher and bring more technology into my student’s learning environment. I want to be able to take the knowledge I’ve gained from this program and incorporate it into everyday lessons, keeping problems of practice in my mind all the while. I’m also planning on providing my new skills to other teachers who are willing to use technology within their classrooms.
