asa Pacifica was pleased to welcome Bryan Samuels, President Obama’s
appointee to the post of Commissioner of theAdministration on Children,Youth, and Families at theU.S. Department of Healthand Human Services – or,put more simply, the federalhead of foster care – to itscampus on February 15th.Vicki Murphy, Casa Pacifica’sDirector of Development &Operations, invited Mr.Samuels when she visitedWashington D.C. lastOctober as part of a selectpanel to discuss emergingtrends in foster care andthe focus of national policyon the issue.
Mr. Samuels’ visit to Casa Pacifica was just one stop on a California trip, which includedpresenting the keynote address at the CaliforniaAlliance for Children and Families’ annual
conference in Napa,California. During hisvisit to Casa PacificaMr. Samuels metwith County officialsfrom Ventura, SantaBarbara, and San LuisObispo Counties anddiscussed thedirection of childwelfare policies andfoster care at thefederal level. Thegood news was thatPresident Obamaactually increasedfunding going
toward child welfare in his 2012 Budget, but Mr. Samuels has the challenging task ofconvincing Congress to pass that increase. Casa
Pacifica’s threeYouth Advocates, each a formerfoster youth, also had theopportunity tomeet privatelywith Mr. Samuelsfor about an hour. They shared theirfoster careexperiences aswell as their first-hand impressionsof what policiesare working andwhat could be
improved for transitioning/emancipated fosteryouth. Mr. Samuels offered some sage adviceas to where the youths should direct theirefforts in the future.
According to theAdministration forChildren & Familieswebsite, prior tohis appointment asCommissioner, Mr.Samuels spent hiscareer formulating service delivery innovationsand streamlining operations in large governmentorganizations on behalf of children, youth, and families. His commitment to public serviceis largely motivated by his own success inovercoming great personal hardship during hiseleven and a half years of growing up in aresidential school for disadvantaged children. This experience shaped his commitment toserve children who live in foster care, and
reinforced his belief that dedicated people andwell-designed programs can make a dramaticimpact on the lives of at-risk youth.
Mr. Samuels served as the Chief of Staff forChicago Public Schools where he held aleadership position managing the day-to-dayoperations of the third largest school system inthe nation. Prior to that role, he served as theDirector of the Illinois Department of Childrenand Family Services, the country’s third largestchild welfare agency, where he implementedcomprehensive assessments of all childrenentering care, redesigned transitional andindependent living programs to better prepareyouth for emancipation, created a child locationunit to track all runaway youth, and introducedevidenced-based programs to address the impactof trauma and exposure to violence on childrenin state care.
Casa Pacifica was grateful to be included on Mr. Samuels’ itinerary, and to be able tointroduce him to Casa Pacifica. Mr. Samuels
later commented that as asnapshot view and withoutknowing what our outcomesare and based on Casa Pacifica’sphysical campus, our childrenseem happy and friendly, andthe staff professional, passionate, and dedicated. Casa Pacifica
was proud to host Mr. Samuels for a few hoursand to share a dialogue on the direction fostercare is heading nationally.

atch Day! It’s an exciting day at the end of February when doctoral candidates in psychology from around the country find out where they are
going to intern and when organizations offering internships find out who will be intheir program. The process begins in the fall when candidates apply for internshipsthat they believe will advance their knowledge and skills. The most highly prizedinternship programs are those approved by the American Psychological Association(APA), especially those focusing on populations with whom the doctoral candidateshope to work. Casa Pacifica is APA approved and highly sought after for aninternship opportunity working with kids and families.
This year more than 170 doctoralcandidates from major universitiesapplied to be accepted as one of ourfive interns. After reviewing theirapplications we invited 36 to comefor a day-long interview (at their ownexpense!). We ranked 24 of them on
the same national data base used by other participatingprograms. Likewise, internship candidates rank theirinternship choices in that data base. The computerprogram then matched sites to candidates.
Match day is over. The five interns we selected will start inAugust. One of our new interns comes from a majoruniversity “with incredible training opportunities andtalented faculty.” She chose Casa Pacifica because it gaveher the “. . . chance to work at a place where individualsand families are served with an appreciation for contextand community, and where the organization is constantlyworking to improve.” About her interview she said that “Iwas consistently impressed by the way everyone at CasaPacifica interacted . . . seeing hellos and laughs, watchingpeople hold doors open for one another, and noticing the
exchanges between all of the people whose paths we crossed. It’s clear that youvalue one another and love the work you do — even when nobody's watching. Yourcommunity . . . is the kind that grows through consistent, positive interactions andisn't the kind that is manufactured for a day. It is also the kind of community thathelps to sustain an agency when the work is difficult or conflict inevitably occurs.”
We see as part of our mission preparing future psychologists and others working withkids and families to be the best they can be. We are proud of our nationally recognizedpre-doctoral psychology internship program, the cutting edge training we provide, and the outstanding staff who are committed to quality services. We are most proud, though, of the “match day” that happens between our staff and those they help whenrelationships heal and kids and families begin rebuilding their lives in healthy ways.
Sincerely,2
From the President of the Board of Directors From the Chief Executive Officer
any, many thanks go to all those who created a magical holiday season for the children of Casa Pacifica. To see the children’s excitement as Santa arrived in the
gym, this year on a decorated bicycle sleigh, was to experience their joy with them. Each child is surprised with a gift that he or she has wished for, thanks to our generouscommunity of donors. Our ever-present Casa Pacifica Angels also make it possible forthe children to shop at a pre-Christmas boutique where each of them is allowed topurchase gifts for their family members, all provided by your donations. To witnessthem select their presents, then choose the wrapping paper, ribbon, and gift tags foreach gift brings joy to all the volunteers who help with the day.
Congratulations to the Angels, who again provided abeautiful evening at the annual Angels Ball. Our gratitudegoes to Hugh and Keets Cassar for hosting the Ball onceagain, to all our generous sponsors, and to CaroleKirschbaum, Kirsten Selleck, and their Angels BallCommittee for creating an elegant evening. The Cassarswere presented with this year’s annual Guardian Angelaward, an announcement that is always a surprisehighlight of the evening. The Cassars are true angels toCasa Pacifica. Another highlight of the evening was ourspeaker Cristina Miranda, a former resident of CasaPacifica who now works there as a Youth Advocate. Weare proud of Cristina and the work she is doing to helpother youth who are aging out of the foster care system.
The Angels never cease their work of fundraising events and special parties for thechildren. They are already at work planning the Wine & Food Festival and the children’sprom in June, as well as the Fashion Show in September. In addition, past Casa PacificaBoard of Directors members Al and Petra Lowe and their loyal committee are planningthe 19th annual Care for Kids golf tournament in July. All these volunteers are workingto create a better life for the disadvantaged children of Casa Pacifica.
We are happy to welcome new Board members Sean Baker, Doug Mazza, and RezaRazzaghipour. At our monthly board meetings, our volunteer board members and staffdiscuss the work of the many committees in place to oversee the very complex operationthat is Casa Pacifica. In addition, we follow the progress of a child or two during theirstay at our agency. On occasion a child, along with his or her clinician, will come in totalk to the Board during its monthly meeting. It is amazing to watch a child sit in frontof a large group of adults whom they don’t know and pour out their heart, knowingwe are there because we care about them. It keeps us grounded and confirmed in ourknowledge of why we donate our time and talents to this “home with a heart.”
We are so grateful to everyone who volunteers and donates of themselves to Casa Pacificaeach year, bringing blessings to our children in an abundance of ways.
Sincerely,
MM

ith the help of generous donors Sean and Dianna Baker, and a gift from an anonymous friend, Cloud 9 (the campus store where
the kids can ‘shop’) was moved from a small, dark, windowlessroom in the gymnasium building to a large, light-filled space in a modularbuilding near the school. Dianna Baker, a Cloud 9 volunteer, was soexcited about making this change that she convinced her husband theyshould help finance the move and remodel, as well as help stock the newstore with items for the kids to buy. Sean Baker was right on board andeven brought in his electronics person to install a flat screen TV that runsspecial videos all day long. New vinyl flooring that resembles woodenplanks and new ceiling tiles immediately gave a fresh, relaxed vibe to the
space, which now offers a “Surf Shack” theme. A special pass throughwindow was installed so that in the future, students will be able to learnabout business by running the store for a few hours each week and selling items through the walk-up window. A freestanding counter withreed-covered chairs offers a spot for the kids to sit down and enjoy an icecream bar or smoothie.
Cloud 9’s grand opening was held early in December, and the kids loved it immediately. We are extremely grateful to the Bakers and to ouranonymous donor for their generosity, and our children thank them for creating a hip, cool place on campus to hang out.
s I reflect on the past two-and-a-half years since I arrived at Casa Pacifica, I am amazed at the progress the school has made. It would be unfair to take all of the credit, so I would love to take this opportunity to update you on programs that
have been implemented, highlight people who have contributed to theturnaround, and share our vision for the future.
The SRA reading program has had profound results for our youth through targetedreading intervention. With the help of teacher Jenny Duncan, students haveimproved their reading levels in a short amount of time, including a couple ofstudents who jumped three grade levels in one school year. Additionally, weincreased our technology focus through the use of laptops, projectors, andaccess to Apex Learning’s online coursework.
The school hired a certified fitness trainer, Missy Andrews, to work with studentson group and individual goals regarding health and fitness. Recently, our youth trained for the Great Race of Agoura 5K run, and are working on meeting presidential fitnessstandards. Jill and Tom Ball continue to grow our music program and each performanceexceeds our expectations. And, this year saw the opening of the orientation and interventionroom, run by Mark Lybrand and Mary-Lynn Wagner, which provides a welcoming environmentfor all new students, ensuring a positive, smooth transition into our school.
In the classroom, our teachers have emphasized higher academic standards and focused onquality instruction, including Character-Based Literacy, to help contribute to student learning. Each year our teachers and their support staff strive to reach kids that many schools havegiven up on. They do this by focusing on relationships and quality instruction. Our behaviorsupport staff is now present in the classrooms allowing them to be more proactive in headingoff incidents, which has translated into better results. Whether encouraging our kids to playon our basketball team in the Boys & Girls Club league, participate in the County ScienceFair, work an on or off-campus job, attend welding classes at the County’s ROP program, take junior college classes while in high school, or prepare kids to pass the High School ExitExam, our staff has truly embraced the concept that it takes a village to help these students.
In addition, the administrative team of Darlene Garcia, Monica Arambula, and Annie Ellberghelps to make the school’s day-to-day operations run smoothly.
We could never do our work without the tremendous support of Dr. Steve Elsonand our Board of Directors, the clinical team, the Development office, the healthclinic, and all of the programs at Casa Pacifica working together to ensure our kids’ultimate success. Casa Pacifica is also the fortunate benefactor of tremendouscommunity support. Though much of it comes in the form of financial donations,a number of individuals and groups have given their time to help in our school’sremarkable turnaround. Individuals like Pat McDonough, Rose Larson, and KarenMadden faithfully run our library. On-campus volunteers Kerry Anderson, TiffanyBrinner, Richard Castaniero, Steve Coyne, Sande Crawford, Maria Oliver, SandyPhillips, Danielle Smith, and Barbara Wagner help students in the classroom eachweek. CSUCI’s Community Coordinator, Pilar Pacheco, keeps us in mind and sends
quality tutors and mentors our way. This year Pete and Pat Spink of Cabo Seafood and GrillCantina in Oxnard hosted an Enchilada Night to benefit us, and a very generous monetarydonation from Roger Alves of Scosche Industries enabled the school to purchase muchneeded resources.
Our deepest thanks go to Rancho St. Francis, a program of the Hogan Family Foundation, and Coach Patty’s Gymnastics for providing our students special access to their programs. And finally, a special thank you goes to Heidi Whitcomb of Ventura Rentals, who tirelesslyvolunteers her time and resources for the students in the NPS. This list is not exhaustive and weare very grateful to everyone who has donated time or resources to make our school a success.
So what lies ahead? Continued academic and emotional success is at the forefront of ourefforts. We look forward to the addition of a program that will serve at-risk autism students,as well as a fitness center/weight room for children. A mid-term WASC (Western AssociationSchools & College) accreditation visit is scheduled in the spring. And, we look forward tomore kids passing the High School Exit Exam, becoming proficient on state standards, andhaving positive and successful transitions to the next stage of their lives.

Sponsor A Child for the Prom for $100
Though a few months away, plans for the 2011 Children’s Prom are already underway. The June Prom is always an exciting event for the day school students and Casa Pacific
residents, as it offers the opportunity not only to ride in a limousine, but also to spend a few hours mingling, dancing, feasting, and taking memorable photos.

We rent tuxedos for the highschool boys, but need to purchase slacks, dress shirts, dark socks, and shoes for the restof them. If you would like to help make the Prom an unforgettable memory, sponsor achild for the prom for $100. C asa Pacifica is always proud to highlight the efforts of our community’s younger members to make a difference in the lives of Casa Pacifica’s children. The following
are some of those efforts:
Several Conejo Valley Boys & Girls Clubs joined together tosupport Casa Pacifica’s kids by purchasing gifts featured onholiday dove “ornaments." Casa Pacifica provides these itemsto the community so people can help make a difference andbring happiness to our kids during the holiday season. Eachornament represents an item from one of the children’sholiday wish lists. With the help of generous efforts fromyouth of the Redwood Boys & Girls Club, Sequoia Boys & GirlsClub, Los Cerritos Boys & Girls Club, Colina Boys & Girls Club, and Chaparrel Boys & Girls Club, a large collection of wished-for treasures found its way to Casa Pacifica’s doors. Thank youto all the kids at each of the Boys & Girls Clubs who openedtheir hearts to making our children’s lives brighter thisholiday season, and to Dave DeMaio of the RedwoodBoys & Girls Club for organizing this project.
In November, Vicki Murphy, Casa Pacifica’s Director of Development & Operations, andArchie, Casa Pacifica’s therapy dog, visited Round Meadow Elementary School inCalabasas and shared the story of Casa Pacifica and its children. As a result, ten classesfrom the elementary school adopted Casa Pacifica this past holiday season and collectedan amazing amount of clothing, books, electronics, games, personal care items, linens, gift cards, etc. for our kids. The delivery cars overflowed abundantly when they arrived at
Casa Pacifica. Thank you to all the teachers, parents, administrators, and especially thechildren of Round Meadow Elementary for their loving, giving, and generous hearts! You made a difference in our children’s lives!
With the help of their mothers, Julie Hainer and Pam Davies, agroup of young children cleverly named “the Caring Crew” createda wonderful, sugary masterpiece of a gingerbread village for thechildren of Casa Pacifica. With rows of houses, streets and a centralpark with decorated trees, the children adorned the royal icing-covered town with peppermint sticks, red hots, M&Ms, licoricewhips, hard candies, gumdrops, and marshmallows. The villagewas prominently displayed at the children’s holiday party, and ascould be expected, some of the finishing details of the creation“disappeared” into sweets-craving mouths. Not too much damagewas done, however, and everyone had a great time enjoying themouth-watering display. Thank you to Julie, Pam, and all the kids
who were so thoughtful, creative, and generous!
In December, Colin Milhaupt celebrated the momentousoccasion of his Bar Mitzvah. In honor of his grandmother, Grace Cohen, Colin donated the$450 he received in Bar Mitzvah gifts to Casa Pacifica. His grandmother had supportedand appreciated Casa Pacifica for many years, recognizing our agency’s important workwith the children in our community who lacked families that love, protect, nurture andcare for them. Our sincere thanks go to Colin for his generosity and selfless gift, and ouradmiration for his recognition of his grandmother’s love and care for others – a wonderfulexample for young people as they step forward into the world.

hile many businesses and groups donated their time and energies to helping Casa Pacifica and its children over the past few months since the last Heartlines
issue, the following highlight just a few of those efforts:
he Camarillo Quilters Association, lead by their President Allison Bailey, included Casa Pacifica once
again this year as recipients of the beautiful, colorful, detailed, creative handmade quilts the group fashionseach year. Casa Pacifica received 40 of the beautifulworks of art to give to the children and families thatCasa Pacifica serves. We are very grateful to eachCamarillo Quilters Association member for the love and care they put into their blankets, and for the compassion and love that those blankets represent as they are wrappedaround our deserving children.
Guided by Linda Landau, Pam Johnson, WendyChandler, Kim Robertson, Debbie Nunez, LynneZuckerman, and Karen Zaracoff of the NationalCharity League’s Conejo Valley and Westsidechapters, 280 volunteers – women and daughters –joined together in Casa Pacifica’s gymnasium andconstructed 400 fleece blankets for Casa Pacifica’schildren and families in just one afternoon. Thewomen cut fabric of a wide variety of colors anddesigns, fringed each edge of each blanket, and then
knotted the pieces as a finishing detail. We are grateful to the National Charity League’sdedicated volunteers for this generous gift, that combined with the quilts from the
Camarillo Quilters Association gives Casa Pacifica the opportunity to comfort a great number of children who are in need of love. Thank you to all the mothers and daughtersof the National Charity League, and all the ladies that organized the day, who each gaveof their time and hearts to make this event so successful!
Keeping our children warm continued as a theme in January – just in time for the coldweather Southern California experienced – when Rick Winters of Winters Financial Groupand Lydia Gable of Prudential California Realty organized a Winter Wonderland charity event.Held at a local park in Westlake Village, the fun day included games, craft projects, warmcoffee, and cool smoothies, while focusing on collecting gently used coats for the childrenof Casa Pacifica. It was a wonderful time for the many people who attended as Rick andLydia presented over 500 coats to Casa Pacifica! Our deep thanks go to Rick and Lydia fortheir unique and innovative idea to bring help and warmth to Casa Pacifica’s kids.
John Stevens created a special holiday moment when he dropped ofa large donation of toys, games, books, and more that his churchcollected specifically for Casa Pacifica’s children. John, married anda member of the United States Army, is also a former Casa Pacificaresident! It was very inspiring to have him visit our campus and notonly give back to a place that gave so much to him, but to enlist hischurch in making a difference in the lives of children who need help, just as he did. Our sincere thanks go to John, his mother-in-law whoaccompanied him to drop off the gifts, and all the members of John’schurch for this thoughtful and generous donation that brightenedthe lives of our children during the holiday season! We are proud tohave had a positive impact on John’s life that he wanted to repay.

Holidays at Four Seasons Hotel Westlake Village Bless Casa Pacifica
A s it has done for the past couple of years, Four Seasons Hotel WestlakeVillage helped brighten the holiday season for Casa Pacifica’s children
with several fundraising activities. The elegant and popular Teddy Bear Tea,held each Saturday and Sunday in December leading up to Christmas, garnered aplethora of toys and gifts for our kids as the price of admission to the Tea wasan unwrapped gift for a Casa Pacifica child.
Four Seasons Hotel also auctioned off “deeds” to gingerbread structures, asthey have done in the past, expertly crafted by the hotel’s Assistant PastryChef and his helpers. This year, however, instead of a few large mansions, they built a Gingerbread Village that featured real estate such as Snowflake ElementarySchool, Wonderland Train Station, Gumdrop Factory, Mrs. Claus’s Poinsettia FlowerBoutique, The Egg Nog Café, and the Hot Chocolate Water Tower, just to name a few.Once a deed was purchased, Four Seasons Hotel donated that amount to Casa Pacifica inthe name of the gingerbread house’s new “owner.”
A special dinner and reception was also held for Four Seasons Hotel’s regularclients who enjoyed, along with the excellent fare, playing various games ofchance such as a dice game called “Throw Santa from the Sleigh.” Winnersreceived half the pot, the other half of which was donated to Casa Pacifica.Vicki Murphy, Casa Pacifica’s Director of Development & Operations, and Archie, our therapy dog, attended Four Seasons Hotel’s employee and family holidayparty to thank Four Season’s wonderful staff for all they did during the holidayseason to benefit Casa Pacifica. Archie was a big hit as everyone wanted to gettheir photo snapped with him, shortening the line for Santa for a little while.
Casa Pacifica is very grateful to Four Seasons Hotel Westlake Village for all their supportduring the holiday season, and throughout the year, and we appreciate their generosityand partnership in bettering the lives of our deserving children.
Look for the Four Seasons Hotel Westlake Village VIP Lounge at the Casa Pacifica AngelsWine & Food Festival, Sunday June 5th.

Casa Pacifica gratefully recognizes the following
foundations, businesses, and organizations for grants.
Under the extended charitable IRA legislation, now you can make charitable gifts usingfunds from your individual retirement accounts (IRAs) without undesirable tax effects.
Previously you would have had to report any amount taken from your IRA as taxableincome. You could then take a charitable deduction for the gift, but only up to 50percent of your adjusted gross income. In effect, this caused some donors to pay more inincome taxes than they would have if they hadn’t made a gift at all.
Fortunately, now these IRA gifts can be accomplished simply and without tax complications.Plus, you can make the gifts now—while you are living and able to witness the benefitsof your generosity. This unique opportunity expires at the end of 2011.
You may contribute funds this way if:• You are age 70½ or older at the time of the gift. • The gifts total any amount up to $100,000 in 2011. • You transfer funds directly from an IRA. • You transfer the gifts outright to one or more qualified charities, but not to supporting
organizations, or for gift annuities, charitable trusts or donor advised funds.
How the Extended Law Works Pat, age 80, has $450,000 in an IRA and has pledged to give Casa Pacifica $75,000 thisyear. If Pat transfers $75,000 to us directly from the IRA, she will avoid paying income taxon that amount. She cannot, however, claim a charitable deduction—it is a pure wash. Pathas found an easy way to benefit Casa Pacifica without tax complications. If Pat’s spouse hasan IRA and is 70½ or older, he can also give up to $100,000 tax-free to a charity of his choice.
How to Make a Gift Contact your IRA custodian soon to transfer your desired gift amount to Casa Pacifica.
For More Information It is wise to consult tax professionals if you are contemplating gifts under the extended law. Please feel free to contact Carrie Hughes at (805) 445-7831 or [email protected] any questions.

O n February 26th, the 22nd version of the Angels Ball was held once again at the stunning Sherwood Country Club, and hosted
by Keets and Hugh Cassar for the fourth year in a row. The ballroomwas awash in gold lighting as guests gathered to enjoy each other’scompany and dine on gourmet fare, bid on wonderful Live Auctionitems, dance the night away to the sounds of Hit Machine, and hearan inspiring story told by Cristina Miranda, a Casa Pacifica alumna.
Ms. Miranda shared the moving story of herlife growing up in a house plagued withdomestic violence, circumstances that leadto her eventual placement at Casa Pacifica. It was her life’s path following her stay atCasa Pacifica that brought people to tears, however. A young, single mother at twenty, she was encouraged by Vicki Murphy andCarrie Hughes of Casa Pacifica’s DevelopmentDepartment to get a college education as“the ticket to a better life.” Cristina beganworking at Casa Pacifica as a YouthAdvocate and was determined to finishcollege. and social work. Ms. Miranda’s speech was a compelling influenceon the guests who later bid generously on the Higher EducationScholarships offered in the Live Auction, which alone raised $49,000to help foster youth attend college or trade school.
There was a special side story to Ms. Miranda’s speech. Dr. RozWarner, a Casa Pacifica Board of Directors member, is also one ofthe Women of Jewelia – a group of 13 women who joined togetherto purchase a stunning diamond necklace (which they named Jewelia),and who take turns each month using the necklace to bring goodinto the world. Dr. Warner surprised Ms. Miranda at the Angels Ball byplacing the elegant strand of diamonds around her neck. Kym Douglas– the beauty expert, make-up artist to the stars, and television personalitywho is regularly seen on the Ellen DeGeneres Show, skillfully emceedthe evening’s events. The Live Auction presented unique offeringsincluding a private dinner for ten at Sherwood Country Club; anentertainment package that included tickets to the Emmy Awards Show,The Ellen DeGeneres Show, The Doctors Show, and dinner at theSmoke House in Toluca Lake; a seven-day cruise on Princess CruiseLine; a Labrador Retriever puppy; and a San Diego get-away thatincluded sailing on the America’s Cup “Stars & Stripes” yacht, andtickets to the Old Globe Theater. Special offerings that benefitedCasa Pacifica kids directly included the Higher Education Scholarshipsand camp experiences to SeaWorld and Big Bear.
The evening was wonderful success raising over $172,000 (net) togo toward filling the gap between what funding Casa Pacificareceives through government contracts and the actual costs ofrunning its valuable programs and services. We are very grateful tothe Angels Ball Co-chairs, Kirsten Selleck and Carole Kirschbaum, and the Angels Ball Committee for all their hard work and love increating this beautiful, elegant evening. Our sincere thanks go to allof our sponsors for ensuring the Angels Ball raised significant fundswhich will benefit Casa Pacifica’s deserving children and youth.
Angels Ball an Educational Experience for All
C asa Pacifica is proud to announce the Guardian Angel Award for 2010 was
presented at the Angels Ball to Keets andHugh Cassar for their tremendous love, support, and commitment to Casa Pacificaand its children, exhibited in many ways.
In the words of Board of Director member, Chuck Cohen, whopresented the award to the Cassars: “Tonight we again honorselfless service and boundless philanthropy. In this instance, to citespecific works and accomplishments is almost trite; it is redundant.Yes, we have exemplary service as a board member and officer(Secretary), committee chair, and doers who give of time, andwisdom, and resources to rebuild the dignity, psyche, and humanity
of – to the shame of our greater community – our insufficientlycared for children in hurt.
“Yes, we have extraordinary time and deep financial support given forthe array of Casa Pacifica’s necessary fundraising events as four-timehosts of this Angels Ball, hosts of an annual International Charity GolfTournament that has earmarked its receipts to Casa Pacifica for twoyears running, sponsors of the fabled Wine & Food Festival, specialoccasion hosts at their warm and gorgeously comfortable home, chairwoman of the Angel’s equally fabled Fall Fashion Show, andperhaps most significant, sharing the message of Casa Pacifica –infecting their family, friends, and business colleagues with the grandpurpose and needs of Casa Pacifica.”
Congratulations to Keets and Hugh on receiving this high recognitionwhich symbolizes our sincere gratitude for all they do for Casa Pacifica!

Save The Date!
he past year has been quite a successful one for both the Angels and Amigos. The Angels’ fundraising events garnered substantial
funds for Casa Pacifica – especially the 2010 Wine & Food Festivalwhich netted over $268,000, making it the most successful fundraisingevent in Casa Pacifica’s history. The children’s parties were creative andfun events that had the children smiling and laughing. The children saidlast year’s Haunted Zombie Maze at the Halloween Party was the bestmaze ever! And the Amigos hosted monthly fun days for the kids livingon campus such as hiking trips, bike rides, soccer clinics, a whalewatching excursion, and many other activities that brought the kids and Amigos together for not only a fun time, but also for the opportunityto guide, teach, and mentor the kids.
We are not writing to you to provide a recap of the year’s successesthough. We are writing to you to ask for your help, which can come in two ways. Whether because of the economy or for some otherreason, Angel and Amigo membership has dropped off noticeably in the past couple of years. The dues collected from Angels and Amigosmembership renewals fund the costs of the children’s parties, theAmigos fun days, and end-of-year gift to meet a specific campus need.
Simply joining the Angels or Amigos (or both) makes a difference in thelives of Casa Pacifica’s children. Or, along with joining and paying your dues, you can volunteer by working on a fundraising event committee, helpingout at an Amigo Fun Day, or helping plan and decorate for a Children’sParty. There are volunteer opportunities that take a small amount oftime and effort, and those that require more of a commitment.
We need you! The children need you! Please take a moment and join the Angels and/or Amigos today. You can sign up online atwww.casapacifica.org, or call Stephanie Caffee in the DevelopmentDepartment at (805) 484-7144 to become a member or if you have anyquestions. We look forward to having you join us in making a differencein the lives of some very deserving children who need our help.
Sincerely,
TWe Need You!

asa Pacifica’s children had a great treat this past year celebrating the end of the summer at Calamigos Ranch in Malibu. Angels Board of Directors member Linda
Landau arranged this event and Glen Gerson, theowner of Calamigos Ranch, very generously providedan unforgettable day. Casa Pacifica’s children weretreated to a yummy barbeque lunch, ice cream treats, awaterslide, panda bounce house jumper, paddleboats, water balloon fights, bingo, swimming, and more.Surrounded by soaring, mature trees, the kids playedsoccer and batted softballs on a wide-open field, challenging the staff watching over them to join them. Many of the youth spent hours in the pool, and almostall of them took a turn pedaling the paddleboats
around a small island in the center of the pond with the ducks. Surprising their caregiverswith water balloon attacks was a very popular activity as well. The setting – isolated fromother areas of the ranch – was a perfect place to let the kids run around and feel free toexplore, play, relax, feed the ducks, and have fun with their friends and staff, yet it wascontained enough to allow their supervision without worry.
Casa Pacifica is extremely grateful to Mr. Gerson, to the Ranch’s General Manager AlfredoSalvador, and to all of the Calamigos Ranch staff who made possible such a wonderfulexperience for our children. It was refreshing to see each of our kids looking so happy – asif they hadn’t a care in the world, hinting that they had forgotten for the moment wheretheir lives have placed them. The relaxed looks on their faces, joyful smiles, innocentlaughter, and chance to just be children was a gift beyond measure!
ith a generous grant from Pentair Pool Products in Moorpark and the creative efforts of the Amgen
GCOIS department, as well as our invaluable Angels andAmigos, the 2010 Holiday Party was once again a terrificsuccess. Set among a winter wonderland of trees and animalswith shooting stars streaming across the ceiling, CasaPacifica’s kids enjoyed a delicious sit down dinner served by gracious volunteers – many from Pentair and Amgen –while candy snowman centerpieces on each table looked onand Casa Pacifica’s chorus serenaded the crowd with seasonal favorites. Santa arrivedthis year riding a holiday bedecked beach cruiser bicycle and, as always, was the
highlight of the evening as he handedout gifts and the kids posed with him for photographs. Casa Pacifica is verygrateful to everyone at Pentair PoolProducts, to the Amgen GCOISdepartment lead by Terri Parks, and toour irreplaceable Angels, especially SusanBurgos and Linda Landau – the AngelsChildren’s Events Co-chairs. Your effortsbrought much joy and happiness to ourchildren this holiday season – a giftbeyond compare!

hanks to the efforts of Mark Donaldson (Casa Pacifica’s volunteer volleyball coach) and his wife Erin (Cloud 9
volunteer), Casa Pacifica’s children were treated to aonce-in-a-lifetime visit from world-class beach volleyballplayers and Olympic gold medalists Phil Dalhausser andTodd Rogers. “Coach Mark,” as he is known at CasaPacifica, has played volleyball for many years, and is notonly friends with the two high-ranked kings of the sandcourts, but partners with Phil during the professional’s off-season in smaller local tournaments.
The children watched a video of the exciting final gamein the volleyball stars’ gold medal match against anoverwhelmed Brazilian team during the 2008 OlympicGames in Beijing, and then had the chance to ask manyquestions of the players. The kids were very excited aboutgetting to hold the actual gold medals, which the playersgraciously passed around during the question-and-answerperiod. Following the video presentation, the kids dividedinto groups and took turns in the gymnasium “playing”volleyball with the two men who towered over the them.It was an amazing sight, and the kids had an absoluteblast spending time with the Olympians and getting
pointers on a game they are learning from Coach Mark. Casa Pacifica is very gratefulto Coach Mark and his wife Erin for arranging this special afternoon for our children, and to Phil and Todd for taking time out to come share their story and spend sometime playing with our kids. It was an afternoon our children will never forget!

Thank You to All Our Holiday Season Donors
t is with sincere gratitude that we at Casa Pacifica thank all of the generous donors – individuals, businesses, church groups, youth groups, and many more – who supported
us with so much abundance during this past holiday season. The gifts and contributionsof toys, clothing, personal care items, gift cards, etc. not only filled the holiday hopes ofchildren who live on our beautiful campus, but also those who Casa Pacifica serves in thecommunity through our community-based programs. Your gifts went directly to our childrenand their families, and many of you also donated items for our Holiday Boutique whichoffers our children the opportunity to be givers themselves – providing items for them topresent to individuals who are important in their lives – parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, grandparents, care-givers, etc. The generosity of our community was tremendous andinspiring, and the love and support behind what was given was felt by each child andfamily we serve.
While we would love to thank each donor by name, space will not allow for it. Wewould like to recognize this year’s major donors ($1,000 and over).
