Like having heads bowed in prayer, kneeling to receive the bread and cup in communion, standing during singing and worship, the “Passing of the Peace” has profound theological meaning, rooted in Scripture, and centuries long church tradition. As early as the time Christians gather at each other’s home to worship, they imitated the greeting of the resurrected Jesus to his disciples, “Peace be with you” (Luke 24:36; John 20:19, 26). The apostle Paul opened each of his letters with the words “Grace and peace be with you” (Rom. 1:7; 1 Cor. 1:3; 2 Cor. 1:2). The passing of peace can be exercised at the beginning, in the middle, or toward the end of the worship. It calls one to extend a sign of reconciliation such as a handshake, a hug, or a smile while saying, “The peace of the Lord be with you,” or “peace be with you.” While this might seems like a disruption in the flow of the worship service, the action in itself is worship. In practicing this, we remind each other and teach the younger generations of the gift of peace Jesus promises, “Peace I leave you, my peace I give to you…” For many of us, who frequently experience turbulence in our lives, in work places, and for some, even home, what would be a better way to be reminded of the gift of Christ that would bring some balance and wholeness to our days? Although passing of the peace is practiced and suggested in liturgical churches such as Methodist, Presbyterian, Episcopal, or Catholic, it is not practiced or even known among non- denominational churches or evangelical Christians. For those who have not been exposed to this practice, it seems strange, insincere, and awkward. My hope is that once you know the scriptural foundation of this practice, your concern will be eased. I want to leave you with a quote from Paul Ryan posted in “Reformed Worship”, “When we extend our hand to another, we identify with Jesus, who extended his life to the point of death to make peace with humanity (Col. 1:2021)… As we practice Passing of the Peace, it’s hard to imagine that a simple handshake could ever degrade into a fist fight. How could the same hand that embraces the frail hand of the elderly, the shaking hand of the sick, the tentative hand of the introvert, the rough hand of a laborer, or the soft hand of a little child be considered a weapon? How could the hand that is regularly trained in worship to extend peace become a cause of division? This is the possibility that a simple gesture on Sunday gives us.” May the peace of the Lord be with you! The children usually will come with their class and teacher and after school with their parents. When there aren't children in the Book Fair, there's books that need straightening. The Cabell librarian would also love to have volunteers on Friday, March 4, to help with setting-up and organizing for the Book Fair and on Monday, March 21, to pack the books not sold during the Book Fair. Email Iris at [email protected] or call her at 214-597-5326 or 972-243-8303 for more information. You will also receive information on registering with Dallas ISD as a volunteer. WHAT IS “PASSING OF THE PEACE”? Like having heads bowed in prayer, kneeling to receive the bread and cup in communion,

standing during singing and worship, the “Passing of the Peace” has profound theological

meaning, rooted in Scripture, and centuries long church tradition.

As early as the time Christians gather at each other’s home to worship, they imitated the

greeting of the resurrected Jesus to his disciples, “Peace be with you” (Luke 24:36; John 20:19,

26). The apostle Paul opened each of his letters with the words “Grace and peace be with you”

(Rom. 1:7; 1 Cor. 1:3; 2 Cor. 1:2).

The passing of peace can be exercised at the beginning, in the middle, or toward the end of the

worship. It calls one to extend a sign of reconciliation such as a handshake, a hug, or a smile

while saying, “The peace of the Lord be with you,” or “peace be with you.”

While this might seems like a disruption in the flow of the worship service, the action in itself is

worship. In practicing this, we remind each other and teach the younger generations of the gift

of peace Jesus promises, “Peace I leave you, my peace I give to you…” For many of us, who

frequently experience turbulence in our lives, in work places, and for some, even home, what

would be a better way to be reminded of the gift of Christ that would bring some balance and

wholeness to our days?

Although passing of the peace is practiced and suggested in liturgical churches such as

Methodist, Presbyterian, Episcopal, or Catholic, it is not practiced or even known among non-

denominational churches or evangelical Christians. For those who have not been exposed to

this practice, it seems strange, insincere, and awkward. My hope is that once you know the

scriptural foundation of this practice, your concern will be eased.

I want to leave you with a quote from Paul Ryan posted in “Reformed Worship”, “When we

to make peace with humanity (Col. 1:2021)… As we practice Passing of the Peace, it’s hard to

that embraces the frail hand of the elderly, the shaking hand of the sick, the tentative hand of

the introvert, the rough hand of a laborer, or the soft hand of a little child be considered a

PRAYER RIBBON MINISTRY

Chapel Hill’s newest Ministry, Prayer Ribbons; has 20 Participants – (so far)!! The purpose of the ribbon is to answer God’s call for His people to love one another. If we are to follow God’s greatest commandment – “to love your neighbor as God loves you” then we must pray for our neighbor. And allow ourselves to be prayed for! This Ministry is as simple as they come. You pray for someone in our congregation, and someone else in our congregation will pray for you! You receive a Ribbon personalize with a name and you pray for that person as often as you can for the month. You will return and receive a new person’s Ribbon each month. Make sure that you put the Ribbon in a prominent place so that it will remind you to pray as often as you can! There is no such thing as “too much”!

We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you. Colossians 1: 3
