Pack a cooler in your car this sum-mer; the best reasonably priced local seafood (Va. and N.C.) comes via those unexpected roadside pull-offs where vendors in pickup trucks offer heads-on shrimp for $4.99 per pound, bushel baskets teeming with freshly caught blue crabs, bags of littleneck clams and, often, a local waterman’s catch-of-the-day. these tailgate merchants ply their trade along heavily traveled summer routes—highways 13, 17, 158 and 168. But dozens of volunteers who helped construct the Virginia Beach family’s ultra-modern new home were on hand in February to help host ty Pennington shout “Move that Bus!” the best part was that spacious new digs could hardly have gone to a more deserving family—foster parents who, in their spare time, make food to hand out freely to the homeless.
